Title: Jacksonville City Council members want a voice in entertainment management

A push to keep Jacksonville’s equestrian center open could lead to the City Council having a role in deciding a contract to manage sports and entertainment facilities citywide.

Legislation being introduced Tuesday would require council approval before a contract is signed to manage or promote sports and entertainment venues for the city.

That would give the council a voice in a two-company competition playing out now to take over management of EverBank Field, Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, The Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts, the Prime Osborn Convention Center and Ritz Theatre and Museum.

Backers say the council had that power years ago, but somehow conceded it to earlier mayors.

“There is some appetite to have that authority,” said Councilman Ray Holt, who submitted the legislation with Councilman Bill Gulliford.

Or... and the upside of this is??

Actually, the CC should not be involved in the day to day. Make the rules and turn the operation over to an experienced management group. The Mayor and his administration is not an experienced management group, either. His forte is politics, schmoozing, influencing. Make the rules, assure they are followed and perform due diligence in locating and contracting the experts.

^That is what's happening. The Council just wants a say in it.

Something about the council wanting to have a say in this just doesn't seem normal to me.

im not sure if our council should have say so..they prove time after time that they dont care about public programs and would probably defund the program and turn it over for private profit...our conservative republican council as most republicans seem to turn their noses away from public places...hell our councils year after year have defunded our public schools time after time...
