And we now have moment. Its going to be nice to see another empty lot downtown occupied.

The City Building Inspection Division approved a building permit Thursday for construction of a 7-Eleven convenience store Downtown at a project cost of $500,000.
According to the permit information, Sweenor Wilkes Construction LLC is the contractor for 2,940-square-foot 7-Eleven at 9 W. Union St.
The site is bordered by Union, Main and State streets.
Sweenor Wilkes has a Florida office in Sarasota. It focuses on retail petroleum and convenience store construction. It also has offices in Rhode Island.
Last week, 7-Eleven President and CEO Joe DePinto said at a news conference Downtown that the company would open more than 80 stores in the Jacksonville area by 2015. He said two will open by the summer Downtown.
The other Downtown store is planned at 111 Julia St., at Forsyth Street.
DePinto said each 7-Eleven generates about $100,000 a year in in sales and property tax revenue and each creates at least 10 jobs.
Dallas-based 7-Eleven is returning to Jacksonville after a noncompete agreement expired with Gate Petroleum Co. Jacksonville-based Gate bought 28 7-Eleven stores in 1990 and converted them to Gate stores.
Great to see a new Convenience Store in the food desert. Maybe Baptist can put a Solantic next door to help counteract all the Sodium and Sugar sold at the 7/11.
I'm just happy to see another lit sign downtown...

the mayor would lead one to believe there is no grocery downtown. Seriously though, it is nice to actually see a business announce its intentions to build downtown and they waste no time turning dirt!
Anything is better than a deserted lot with weeds and trash everywhere.
The former Zodiac space would have been a great location for a 7-11
QuoteAnything is better than a deserted lot with weeds and trash everywhere.
Sure, the First Baptists would love to have a brothel downtown too, on some empty land, just because it would spruce up the area.
Remember those words when Sleiman comes to an area of town you enjoy and decides to drop a mega strip center there with more of the same crap his centers are known for.
There are plenty of convenience stores close to that location, a block away is one, with gas.

LMAO!!! I have to say, M-train , that was a decent funny! Bulldoze the Funeral Home behind it and put it there.

The Furchgotts building at the corner of Adams & Hogan, building "Da Real Ting" is in. It's about 2800 SQ FT all glass exterior. Owner isn't marketing it.

Its so sad that this is news.
Here is a clay county location going up. (http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn72/Vendingman/a56ba774.jpg)
I wonder why 7-Eleven isn't rushing to places where the Mobility Fee Moratorium Local insider give away is taking place. Any ideas from our City Council Judases?
Not sure if this is the right thread (so many 7-11 threads lately), or, if this "news" has already been reported, but went to Gus Shoe Repair this morning, and he said 7-11 isn't trying to take Magnificat's location anymore.
The 7-11 downtown is underway. Drove by it yesterday and they are doing site preparation .

addition, regardless of what type it is. Another empty lot filled

I agree. add to, not take away from Downtown. Perhaps the owners of the Blighted Shell Station across the Street will follow suit and perk their establishment .

Sometimes when something positive takes place in an area, the surrounding areas follow suit. One can hope. Even a fresh coat of paint would be a good thing. But you're right Duval .. its pretty sad like it presently is.
It will be nice to have a convenient spot to grab milk or bread. Or perhaps pump gas in a location that properly lights the pumps at night.
That said, I do hope the company enforces a strict "No Loitering" policy. As someone who drives down Main Street every day multiple times, I can testify that the existing gas station across from the First Baptist garage is an unnerving stretch of road to wheel through. Loiterers camp out on the sidewalk on both sides of the street and will walk in front of a car without a second thought. They also have no problem panhandling a driver trying to pump gas or, as I witnessed Tuesday morning, conducting a little transaction within 10 yards of the gas pumps.

The owners of that station don't care. I have actually gone in and asked them to enforce their rules (I've escorted females up there on more than one occassion who were too scared to get out of their cars), and all they do is shrug it off.
I've never stopped at that gas station and NOT been asked for money by a panhandler. It doesn't bother me, but it certainly bothers most potential customers. Especially when you see drugs being dealt on the fenceline behind the buidling but still in plain site of the pumps(and the registers which are right behind the area in question).
Its a damn shame that a coming to our downtown is big news. That alone should tell you how lame our downtown is and how its council leaders are so behind a visitor i have from Seattle that says even as far as she is this city is laughed upon for its conservative leadership...actually she said they say we get what we deserve for allowing conservative biblethumpers to rule this town...welcome to jax everyone.
:o
Happy Friday to you too Garden Guy!
Hey, lay off the 7/11 jokes, it should be said that one of the winning lottery tickets for the 640 million dollars was sold at a Maryland 7/11.
7-11 is now open at Julia and Forsyth St. Does anyone find it ironic that Gate has no stations or convenience stores anywhere downtown?
http://www.jaxdailyrecord.com/showstory.php?Story_id=537209
Riding the Riverside Trolley Bus back from City Hall a little while ago and saw that it was open. Looks good in a clean, well-lighted sort of way. A young man in a 7-11 Shirt got on the bus and said proudly that it was his first day at work.
Looks like a nice new building downtown, I hope it is contagious in that area!

I guess they just aren't interested in urban areas, just look who owns the chain. Is there any surprise?
Probably so. I do find it funny that two of 7-11's first Jacksonville locations are downtown. Maybe they know something the rest of us don't?
My gosh...another 'dining option' downtown, sweet!
Just went and bought a diet coke there this 24 hour convenience store has just made downtown more convenient.
It's open 24 hours a day?
According to their site it looks like all of the Jacksonville stores are 24/7.
http://www.7-eleven.com/locator.aspx
All 7-Elevens are open 24 hours a day, unless there is some sort of local law or covenant that restricts operating hours.
I like the awning. Nice little touch.

Come back Peter King. We've got you covered now...
Exactly.
I will sleep a lot better when I know that Peter King is satisfied on his next trip to Jax....
LMAO!
Well we've finally reached the upper tier of cities.
I stopped by there today. It's not stocked like a typical Jacksonville convenience store. Most of the floor area is dedicated to prepared quick meals like sandwiches, donuts, chicken wings, fruit, etc. Also had a decent sized coffee section. Those guys are going to make a killing at that spot. As long as Greyhound remains around the corner, they should have a steady stream of night business as well. I'm surprised no one has really invested in something like a convenience store or pharmacy in downtown until now. Even without the residential population, there's more than enough office workers to support such a use. I suspect that one at Union and Main will hit the Shell station pretty hard. Peter King would be proud.
Good. Either the Shell will now clean up its act and improve the property and appearance ( which it desperately badly needs to , or close) I hope it elects to do the first. :)
You have no idea how wonderful it is to live on the same street (Forsyth) as a 7-11.
Just as my notice to renew my lease has arrived.
I fear you are all stuck with me for another year.
Oh, thank heaven.
Does anyone know why the construction at the Main and Union location has stalled?
QuoteYou have no idea how wonderful it is to live on the same street (Forsyth) as a 7-11.
Not to overstate the importance of a convenience store... but I've been saying for awhile that it's a big deal for downtown to have somewhere to get basic items past 9pm. You shouldn't have to drive to a different neighborhood to get aspirin at 11pm in a downtown environment. This is how downtown will become a neighborhood and not just some place where people live.
I'll also make another important point, it took me less time to vote on Tuesday morning than it did to get a Slurpee ;)
The 7-11 at the corner of Main and Union is now open. Stopped in this morning for coffee and gas. Business was pretty brisk.
I forgot to mention it the other day. I was in the 7-11 on Forsyth and one of the employees mentioned they were giving away free slurpees that day at the grand opening.
i dont think they have had their official grand opening yet. It's a nice store. Just hope they keep it that way.

Progress is nice to see.

I'd just be happy if somebody, some agency, or some authority would fix the damned streetlight pole across the street. It's leaning about 10 degrees into the street, and the bolts holding it to the base are completely broken off. I have talked to JEA, Public Works, Sheriff and Fire Departments about this hazard and seen NOTHING!
Latest news on 7-11 developments and others via The Daily Record.
Quote7-Eleven continues to add locations
The 7-Eleven convenience store chain has applied for $1 million in permits to build a 4,163-square-foot location in Mandarin at 14826 Old St. Augustine Road.
The permit applications show a $500,000 7-Eleven store; $440,000 for new underground fuel storage tanks; $60,000 for a fuel canopy; and $5,000 for the garbage container.
Harrison French & Associates of Bentonville, Ark., is the designer. No contractor was specified.
Meanwhile, signs are being put on at the corner 7-Eleven store in Riverside at 2545 Riverside Ave. in the Prado Walk center. Dixie Signs Inc. is the contractor for three awning signs and a wall sign. Permits for those were approved Friday.
F&G Construction of Jacksonville Inc. is the contractor for the $427,000 build-out project for the 3,137-square-foot store in Prado Walk.
Sashimi Sushi restaurant planned at Cobblestone
Cobblestone Crossing, where Publix Super Markets Inc. is reviewing plans to tear down its grocery store and rebuild a larger one on-site, also is on tap for a new restaurant.
Sashimi Sushi Grill Bar & Lounge plans a 150-seat operation at the 2771 Monument Road center. A building-permit application shows Sashimi Sushi would occupy 2,400 square feet in unit 5, on the northern end of the center. It would provide patio dining as well.
Tom Shrout is listed as the contractor and Raul Chaumont Architect as the designer.
The plans and application show a potential $25,000 build-out to include indoor booths, tables and bar seating and outside covered seating.
The City approved the permit Tuesday.
Cobblestone Sub LLC of Aventura is the property owner.
As reported, Publix Super Markets appears to be preparing for an expanded store in Cobblestone Crossing in East Arlington. City Council has been reviewing legislation to rezone 13.35 acres at the center to increase the maximum allowable commercial space.
The proposed zoning changes include increasing the allowable commercial space from 93,272 square feet to 102,921 square feet, an increase of 9,649 square feet.
The Daily Record reported in January that shopping center owner Cobblestone Sub LLC of Aventura was negotiating with Publix to rebuild the store on-site. Cobblestone Sub LLC manager Daniel Halberstein said then that if the deal takes place, the project would be developed in 2014.
Cobblestone Sub LLC applied Jan. 2 to the City for a concurrency reservation certificate and mobility fee calculation certificate to tear down the existing 44,595-square-foot Publix grocery store and build a new 54,244-square-foot store at the site.
The certificates were issued Jan. 9.
Publix has operated at the Cobblestone Crossing shopping center since it was built 27 years ago.

If only Vegas would take that bet. I've got some cash I'd like to double in size in a year!
So exciting to see all of these Lil Champ, I mean, 7-11s come on line. If there is one thing Jax needs is quick and easy access to slurpies and candy bars.
I was in jax over the new years, was pretty impressed by the new 7-11 at old middleburg and lane avenue, would definitly be a big plus for down town

Yes permanent monuments to City Council incompetence. Well permanent reminders because they were going to be built anyway.
