Title: Jax Beer Week
Post by: KenFSU on March 28, 2012, 10:04:50 AM
Great idea by Ben Davis, and it looks like there will be a lot of fun stuff going on. In particular, I'm looking forward to the screening of Beer Wars at Sun-Ray.

QuoteJax Beer Week will have samplings, food, even movies

Ben Davis, owner of Intuition Ale Works, came up with the idea.
Posted: March 27, 2012 - 4:42pm  |  Updated: March 28, 2012 - 8:19am

The idea is a week devoted to beer, but not just any beer. Instead, Jax Beer Week (April 2-7) is all about beer brewed here in Jacksonville and by other craft brewers in the state.

It starts Monday, with events at several local breweries and beer-centric pubs. The tap rooms are going to be featuring beers from other breweries, a few beery movies will be shown.

Ben Davis, owner and brewer at Intuition Ale Works, is the one who first got the barrel rolling.

“It was something that I see all these other cities â€" Philly, L.A., Tampa â€" and I thought it’d be cool if we could start it and build it over the next couple of years. Celebrate the local brewing scene.”

The finale will be a beer tasting at Mellow Mushroom in Tinseltown where local breweries as well as home brewers will have their beers for sampling.

The pizza place has increased its emphasis on craft beers over the past year or two and now all three Mellow Mushrooms in the area have several dozen beers on tap, mostly craftly brews.

The staff at the Tinseltown restaurant even brewed a beer that will be tapped during the week.

“I really wanted us to do collaborations with other local brewers,” Davis said, “but that didn’t happen. Maybe next year.”

Here’s the schedule:

MONDAY, APRIL 2

■ Kickbacks Gastropub on King Street will have a local beer night. Owner Steve Flores is hoping to have five to seven beers each from Bold City, Intuition and Green Room. He’s actually phasing them in this week, but they’ll all be $1 off all day Monday.

■ Bold Bean Coffee on Stockton Street will have $4 pints of local and coffee-inspired beer all week.

TUESDAY, APRIL 3

■ Intuition Ale Works on King Street â€" Florida beer week, with guest beers from state breweries on tap through Saturday. Davis isn’t sure how many he’ll have. “As many as we can get our hands on.”

■ Green Room Brewing on Third Street, Jacksonville Beach â€" Unveiling of a double wheat IPA brewed by the staff of Mellow Mushroom on the Intuition equipment.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4

■ Sun-Ray Cinema, Five Points â€" Screening of “Beer Wars,” a documentary about the battle between the mega-breweries and the craft brewers for the American beer drinker. It’s at 5 p.m. and will be followed by a Q&A with brewers Ben Davis of Intuition Ale Works and Eric Luman of Green Room Brewing. Admission to the movie is $6.50 and the six beers on tap will be local.

■ Engine 15, Beach Boulevard, Jacksonville Beach â€" The bar’s own Oak-Aged Simcoe Imperial IPA paired with steam burger sliders and coconut rice, $10.

THURSDAY, APRIL 5

■ Engine 15 â€" Tapping of Amber Wave amber ale, brewed by the writers of that particularly shallow column. All proceeds go to the St. Johns Riverkeeper.

■ Brewers Pizza, Blanding Boulevard, Orange Park â€" Local IPA night with beers from Intuition, Bold City and Green Room, plus the debut of Brewers’ Landslide double IPA paired with an IPA soup and bread.

■ Mile Marker Brewing, Agricultural Center Drive, St. Augustine â€" Double feature movie night “Beerfest” and “Strange Brew” where, in one of the great cinematic feats, Rick Moranis drinks his way out of tank of beer, then puts out a large fire ...

FRIDAY, APRIL 6

■ Engine 15 â€" Local beer tap takeover. In addition to Engine 15’s beers, 10 beers from Intuition, Bold City and Green Room will be on tap.

■ Green Room Brewing â€" Florida beer night, with 30 beers on tap that day, all from the Sunshine state. Pensacola Bay Brewery and Seventh Sun from Dunedin will be making their first Jacksonville appearances, along with some special beers from Cigar City, Swamp Head and Tequesta.

■ Downtown â€" Downtown Pub Crawl. Walk to various local bars sampling beer. Tickets are $15 and includes one local beer along with discounts at the other venues. Starts at 5:30 at the Jacksonville Landing. www.sprbrewcrew.com.

SATURDAY, APRIL 7

■ The grand tasting will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at Mellow Mushroom off Southside Boulevard at Tinseltown. Tickets are $30, and include unlimited beer samples, snacks, a T-shirt and a glass. VIP tickets, $45, get you in at 2 p.m. for some special beers not available to everyone. Organizers are hoping for 500 people. Tickets: beerweekjax.com.

■ Jax Brew Bus will be operating a shuttle between Mellow Mushroom and Intuition Ale Works every 30 minutes. If you want to reserve a spot, that’s $2. (904) 352-0982 or www.jaxbrewbus.com.

As a born again Baptist, I am not too happy about this.  Intend to pop in some Tebow game tapes and prepare for Easter.

Awesome info!  Thanks for sharing this!  I hope to hit the Riverside area events, maybe the one out in Tinseltown, I just hate driving right next to my office on an off day.  I usually try to avoid that area like the plague. :-P

Downtown pub crawl on 4/06 looks good to me.

The pub crawl will visit between five and seven downtown pubs/bars. Each stop will offer drink discounts and hold a raffle for prizes. We will also place donation buckets at each pub to gather more funds towards our goal of providing The Bridge with a significant donation. At the final stop of the pub there will be Grand Prize drawings open to all participants who have completed the entire crawl (hint there will be several and one will be a much-coveted Intuiton Mug Club membership!)

The Jacksonville Landing is hosting the registration and pre-crawl mixer.

Our current lineup of bars/pubs includes:

•Fionn MacCool’s
•Burrito Gallery
•Burro Bar
•Northstar Substation

With more to come.

In addition to these establishments, I have obtained commitments from several restaurants at The Landing that they will provide beer or drink specials to crawlers during the registration/pre-crawl mixer.

Those establishments include:

•Benny’s Steak and Seafood
•Vito’s Italian Restaurant
•Rush Street Lounge

I am still working with several more establishments to get them on board as well.

The registration period/pre-crawl mixer will begin at 5:30 PM, crawl instructions and announcements will be at 6:45, and the crawl will begin at 7:00 PM.

Each participant will receive:

•A souvenir acrylic pint glass
•One free drink ticket
•Discounted LOCAL and FLORIDA beers during the crawl
•Eligibility to be entered in all drawings
•Fun and surprises along the way

And, if they complete the entire crawl, elegibility in the Grand Prize drawings at the end of the crawl.

Items in the drawings include:

Gift certificates

Logo'd items from:

Mellow Mushroom
Engine 15
Northstar Substation
Mile Marker Brewery
Sweetwater Brewery
Sierra Nevada
Guinness

And more...

The overall sponsor of Jacksonville Beer Week is Intuition Ale Works. As a business, this brewery is committed to making Jacksonville a better place for us all and they host many philanthropic events.

Our hope is to be very successful this year and to make the crawl into an annual event. With the proper support I think that this can become a highly attended and anticipated event.

Tickets are only $15 and can be purchased at http://www.sprbrewcrew.com  (http://www.sprbrewcrew.com) or at the event itself. All proceeds will go to programs that support disadvantaged children in and around the city core.

More information about the Jacksonville Beer Week and all the activities going on with it can be found at: http://www.beerweekjax.com (http://www.beerweekjax.com).

Hope to see you on the crawl!

Just a reminder that "Beer Wars" is being shown tonight at Sun-Ray.

Should be a good time.
