A packed house came to city hall last night and Councilman Lumb did something extraordinary....he listened. And then he lead this group of 75 Springfielders through the mirky waters of preservation and politics.

As lovely as he may seem i wouldnt trust anyone who was elected to the Republican executive committee. Remember that hes a republican and remember their history...take take take. A snake in the grass will always be a snake in the grass.
The beauty of our political system is that, Garden guy, you can certainly say that and feel that way. But we also can recognize the truth and know that not all politicians are created equal and many, certainly when at this local level, are in it for what they can do for their city. We can only hope that they are smart enough to know what they must do within the system to get things done and wise and dedicated enough to work that system so that they can actually get to do the positives they set out to accomplish.
I believe Councilman Lumb, regardless of his political affiliations, is tackling the demolition problem because it is something he believes in personally and let's face, it, helping the historic districts is not the way to national politics or we would not be in the mess we are in with the demolitions.
Like Sheclown said, he is listening, something precious few council members seem willing to do. Through Councilman Lumb, we will see the needed changes to the codes and city polices so that we can save the historic structures for the betterment of the city as a whole.
Gaffney is a democrat and Springfield's elected representative and he does nothing. I, personally, don't care what a local official's affiliation is if they are willing to act and do their job and be public servants.
Councilman Lumb lives in Riverside, is active with RAP, and cares about historic preservation. As strider said, he listened last night and spoke of NEW solutions to the policies that have not been working. I left hopeful.
I could care less what political party he is aligned with. If you want to play it from the Republican angle, saving private assets from the bulldozer (which increases the tax base) and spending fewer tax dollars (mothballing is cheaper than demo'ing) works on that side of the aisle too.
Honestly, we're asking Code Enforcement to do LESS so that the free market has a chance to catch up...isn't that the epitome of the conservative philosophy?

I learn from the past..in the past republicans to me have made many many many bad decisions and support ideas that take from those that have little and gives much to those that already have lots..wether it be money or smarts...so i will continue to judge republicans for their past decisions..not that bullshit that come out of many including their leadership...sooeverything isn political and republicans must understand that there are those of us out here that will never listen to a word they say...their party caused this attitude..if they want to follow their their leaders blindly..let them..im not
Councilman Lumb lives in a meticulously restored and maintained duplex in Riverside. He isn't in one of the ritzy parts of Riverside either, but in a nice working class street of bungalows.
I don't care what his party affiliation is or his opinions on the national budget or defense, abortion, etc. I'm sure we would fight like crazy over those issues. He's LOCAL and cares deeply and intelligently about LOCAL issues. He is also instinctively fair and ethical. You couldn't ask for a better combination for a councilman.
He is also a successful businessman in a very competitive field.

Maybe Springfield will have a Wayne Wood-esqu movement to save their structures. Do you need a Certificate of Appropriateness to save a building? If not, what would Code Enforcement do all day?

Park Street to the river is considered the Ritzier part of Riverside. Everything is relative! ;D

So you consider the pothole infested, flood everytime it rains, part of Riverside Avenue as part of the Ritzy area? I have some friends on Copeland who would tell you that some of the homes on Post and College, closer to 5points are nicer than some of the items south of Park. Even the Junior League's church/building, just north of Park is pretty swanky, but I do see your point with the commercial buildings along Park and their upkeep as part of that "ritzy" image. Although there are too many empty commercial buildings south of Park to the River, the Laundry, the empty buildings at Oak and Stockton, as well as the medical building just past Riverside Publix on the way to Avondale.
I will have to remember the next time I get panhandled in the Riverside Publix lot, that it is the Ritzy area and I should feel blessed to be there.
