Title: Hamburger Mary's coming to San Marco?
Post by: bankon1t on March 15, 2012, 12:33:19 PM
Has anyone else heard a rumor about Hamburger Mary's opening a location in San Marco?  This would be very exciting, should it prove to be true.

What part of San Marco and what is Hamburger Mary's?

There could be some confusion.  While that would be epically awesome if Hamburger Mary's came to town, I think in fact someone is opening something called "Mary's," no "hamburger," in Riverside.

From the website - "Hamburger Mary's is an open-air bar and grille for open-minded people."  I visited the location in Denver, and they had drag shows, full bar and hamburgers... Seemed like a really cool place with a good atmosphere. I have not heard about a specific location in San Marco.

Aaawwwwww! Very nostalgic--I had my first legal adult beverage at Hamburger Mary's, when I lived on Capitol Hill in Seattle, in the early nineties...

Yikes, after all the "pink slime" reports of late, I wonder what the future holds for hamburger joints.  We have a Mary's here in Chicago and it's nothing special.

The ones in Wilton Manors and Washington DC closed because they just weren't that good.

Wow.  That's pretty amazing.  I never would have thought Hamburger Mary's would land in Jacksonville.  And certainly not outside of Riverside.  Interesting...

This must have been the buzz about "Mary's" that I've heard.  And wires got crossed because I was told a place called Mary's would be coming to Riverside.  Fun.

Yes Hamburger Mary's is coming to Jacksonville and will be located in the Save Alot shopping center across from the Mayfair Village Apartments on Beach Blvd. They have already painted it purple and the website is coming. Yea for them but hope the location does not cause problems. :-\

That's a seriously weird location, isn't that shopping center pretty much dead? Hell, even as far back as the 80's, the only places I can remember were Eckerd's and Catherine's. I think there's a dmv office there.

Really odd.

It is actually adjacent to the St Nicholas Carwash .. a block or so east.  It appeared to be open today when I drove by .  Interesting Color Scheme.  Kinda stands out ! :)

umm...because St. Nicholas is still the urban core (it is adjacent to San Marco after all)....and, oh yeah, there's already a fully equipped restaurant space with good visibility and parking.

But with its 'gay theme' it seems kind of out place over there. Seems like it would do better in Riverside/murray hill area closer to all the gay bars.  I know they said they are trying to cater to everyone, but still... I hope they can survive that cursed spot though.

Never think of St. Nicholas as being 'in the core'--but yes, you're right. My bad.

And I guess my thinking is a tad on the myopic side, but like The Compound, I just assumed Riverside/Murray Hill would make more sense, and anyone whose done the slightest bit of market research would see that.

Looking at census data, voting patterns, and several donor and other lists that I have access to, Riverside is definitely the LGBT epicenter of Jacksonville.  Historically so.

However, there are pockets in Springfield, Murray Hill, San Marco that would also be expected.  What's interesting is that like a lot of other people, LGBT residents are found all over town.  Including with some concentration at the Beaches and in the vicinity of the Towncenter.

St. Nick may be as good a location as any in town the capitalize on a diverse clientele.

As a homeowner in St. Nicholas, I am thrilled to welcome a new restaurant! I've heard nothing but fun and great reviews about the food/atmosphere. Although it may not be the location some people would think it would land, myself and my neighbors are excited to bring some business to our neighborhood! We have so much potential and space and look forward to more places coming our way!

Comment from one of the presumed owners at Jacksonville.com -

QuoteWe choose St. Nick area, we grew up in Jacksonville and remember what a great area that was back in the 80s. So rather than go to Riverside, San Marco, or Downtown where everybody goes. We choose to help revive a area of Jax that is special to us. HAMBURGER MARY'S will bring business any where it goes, so join us in making St.Nick the new place to be..... And EAT,DRINK,and be MARY!

QuoteIn addition to regular [drag] shows scheduled throughout the day, there’s always a chance for a spontaneous “YMCA” singalong, he said.

This makes it sound like they are catering to the gay community of the 1970s, not 2012.

This will be a great place from everyone of all walks of life. We are looking forward to giving back to all  communities. The food is awesome and has had great success in many markets. We will keep with the Hamburger Mary's success over the last 40 years. We thank you for your great comments. There is a new bar and restaurant coming to the springfield area this summer with a totally different name. We are the only Hamburger Mary's in Jacksonville. We are looking forward to bringing something great to the St. Nick area and welcome everyone. look for our grand opening early May!

the hamburger mary's in wilton manors did not close...they just got out from the franchise and call it Rosie's.  It is the same as Mary's food wise....basically good and reasonable....I don't know about DC.  The franchise had some financial troubles and was recently sold.  I don't quite know how franchises work, but seems like Rosie's broke out about the time of the trouble/sale of the name.

Went Saturday night, 7:30 show, place was packed. However, if you show up and the place is packed, get ready for a wait for the food, we also had our order screwed up, but the drinks were good. The burger was OK, but the sides were in need of help! But the show was amazing and we will be back!
