Title: Audubon profitting from sale
Post by: kitester on March 02, 2012, 10:08:26 AM
It seems that the Audubon society has profited from the sale of critically sensitive and environmentally  significant lands in order to fill their coffers.  A friend of mine in Hatteras NC. has been telling me about the war local residents have been fighting against environmental groups like the Defenders of Wildlife, Sierra Club and Audubon.  This week 80 miles of public access lands will be PERMANENTLY closed to ANY public access. Traditional walkover board walks are now manned by park service police to prevent anyone from even viewing the ocean or walking on the beach.  Armed park service personnel are permitted and required to shoot any mammal life forms such as foxes , raccoons, and opossums.  Environmental groups claim that the shootings are justified to protect one species of bird when it nests in the dune areas along the outer banks.  Environmental groups fought to prevent the repair of the dune line where hurricane damage opened a narrow cut. They fought to prevent the building of a temporary bridge so the community of the lower islands would remain cut off from the mainland. And they continue to fight the building of a permanent bridge sighting environmental concerns. Clearly their goal is to choke the life out of the outer banks community.

Did you hear the wish the child asked for? Thanks audubon for bringing up a whole generation of anti-environmentalists.  This is the same sentiment expressed by many people in our area too. I am an environmentalist. I wish no harm to come to the Piping Plover but I have to say that I can see their point. If the choice was truly plover vs. people (which it is not) then I could see people deciding to wish for the eradication of this bird so they could maintain the way of life they have known for generations.  This is one of the same birds they tried to use to shut down our beaches here in North Florida.

Now get this …..A dying man donated a large parcel of land to the audubon with the belief that it would be preserved as a natural area or all future generations. What did audubon do? They sold it to a developer KNOWING that it would be developed into a big resort with all the infrastructure and parking to support it.  This proves that is not about the environment but about the free money that can be made by these so called “not for Profit” environmental organizations. When I was told about this it seemed just a bit farfetched.  How could audubon stand there and claim that they are protecting the beaches of Hatteras on one hand and on the other be so complacently involved in destroying a natural, unmolested dune habitat?

Don’t believe it? Watch this video.

It is also interesting to note that in areas that are even more critical to the plovers shared beach use has been very successful. The Plover and other shore birds are on the rise without further human restrictions.  I guess the audubon doesn’t want to share with anyone or try to use tried and true methods.

This one shows how we can still have our recreation and be good stewards for the wildlife.

None of the environmental lobbyists acknowledge the successful efforts of our local city parks departments and personnel in their efforts to protect wildlife of all species.  They did ask that predators be trapped out. (read killed) And, every time the city tries to maintain public access they rush to Tallahassee with more lies,  9 year old photographs and wild, unsupported claims of environmental damage.

It'll be a cold day in hell when you don't see your favorite organization drop the "for profit" line somewhere, somehow. Starting to think there isn't a moral institution around anymore.

I sadly admit that I did volunteer work for Audubon for many years. I cant even watch PBS documentaries about wild life and birds any more without at least some amount of resentment and anger. Thanks Audubon for ruining the memories of one of the best times in my life.
