JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
An Avondale man came home early Thursday morning to find someone in his garage.  Police said that during a confrontation, the homeowner was shot and the intruder ran from the scene.

Police were sent to 3800 block of Eloise Street just before 6 a.m. when they got a call that a shooting victim drove himself to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center.

"It does appear that there may have been a burglary attempt and he walked in on it," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jay Farhat said.

Police said the man was shot in the torso and the injury was not life-threatening.

Police told Channel 4 they have no suspect information.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Good to see that Captain Obvious has found employment with the JSO...

Some additional details from the TU. http://jacksonville.com/news/crime/2012-03-01/story/homeowner-shot-avondale-burglary-attempt

I have to wonder why there's no description of the assailant.  And why drive to Shands from Eloise?  St. Vincent's is much closer.

My theory is that the burglar was there because he was looking for something specific.  Otherwise, many elements of this don't add up.  Did the homeowner know the burglar had a gun?  Either way, why fight him off, or why was fighting him necessary? I imagine the homeowner would have run for the phone to call 911, or the burglar would have run away once he was discovered.   Also, nobody does a home invasion with a gun these days unless it is drug or gang related. It ups the level of the crime considerably and the penalty skyrockets.  This guy was in the house for a reason.

There is no guarantee it was even a burglary. Guy could have been shot for a variety of sketchy reasons and then said it was a "burglary" to cover it up. The fact that he drove himself to the hospital instead of calling the police and ambulance to the scene, points to that as a possibility.

It could be a totally legit incident and this guy could just be an early riser, but it also could something else. Hard to know with those vague details.

A sensible person doesn't go to St. Vincent's for trauma.  No, no!  And for a gun shot wound don't go anywhere but Shands.  They've had more practice.

Jay Farhat is a great guy and great policeman. Its not his fault that the perp has not been found. Maybe you would prefer no comment from the JSO, great back to the dark ages.

Yeah Dog is right, you get shot, go to Shands trauma center. With St. Vincent's there have been a few incidents where people go in and never come out alive. Some interesting cases floating around with lawsuits, just ask folks who live in Avondale about the cases.

The report says the owner came home in the very LATE early AM...sorry but anyone creeping around at that time is suspect to be doing something to keep awake all night.
The JSO was called at 6AM? sounds like a neighbor called. I know any of my neighbors even in a drunken stupor would hear a gunshot!
Did they hear the shot and watch him drive away?
Was the owner armed at the time? Never mind I answered my own question. Most armed individuals would have made a 180 degree different headline.
"Burglary suspect shot in garage..steak knife found in hand"
That said,I agree with the Shand's decision. Some think this place is the pits and it does have it's problems
(like stuck thermostats freezing patients)
My cardiac patient Father insisted on St Vincent's because he was Catholic. He contacted a Staph infection there that stayed as an open wound till he died in his sleep in 2001.

Shands is a Trauma One center so they have surgeons on hand 24/7, unlike St. Vincent's.

My understanding is that homeowner is at NAS JAX, possibly a navy pilot, as Nader over at Pinegrove mentioned that the gentleman has just moved into the house in the last month or so, and  had taken it over from "another pilot."  The house is very nice. It does sound like the burglar was there for a specific purpose rather than a smash and grab. Not a great way to welcome someone to the neighborhood . . .

Jeez, I had no idea about the horror stories that have come out of St. Vincents...I always figured Memorial was the laughing stock of the Jacksonville health world (I hear it's THE place you go to contract MENSA). Guess I was wrong?

Haha thanks for pointing out that error. I meant MRSA. Clearly I'm no member of Mensa!

This common practice with military aircrew...

Different hospitals specialize in different things, regardless of their level of care in other areas. Shands is by far the best trauma center in this part of the state and will always have someone on staff.

BTW, it goes to show you that the easy access to a number of hospitals with different specialties is one of the many good reasons to live in the urban core. If you were in, for instance, a "safe" neighborhood like Julington Creek, it would take you over 20 minutes to get to the only hospital remotely nearby, as I recently learned the hard way.

QuoteMy understanding is that homeowner is at NAS JAX, possibly a navy pilot

My understanding from some of the local realtors (plug Prudential Network Realty) is that the pilot is a renter, not his name on the records in real estate. Regardless, apparently the pilot surprised the intruder, who was trying to hot wire the pilot's motorcycle, when the pilot grabbed the intruder's arm as it was coming up with a gun and the gun went off.

Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda, had the pilot not grabbed the hand of the intruder, the gun may not have gone off. But you never know.

The wife and I were at 'Town Sunday for brunch and we heard from John, the day manager, that another shooting took place in Boone Park Saturday. Anyone else hear the same?

Avondale is sorta the wild west all of a sudden.
