Why have urban freeways destroyed the urban core?

I don't think that's a bad thing.

Why is there a decline in land values?  Other than we build them to be ugly, what are the other causes?  A highway literally funnels people from across the country into the urban core.  That seems more like a pro than a con.  What happened?

do you want to live next to one...do you want a noise wall in your backyard?

btw...the highway also funnels people out of the core just as quickly.

I especially love it when a new Dailey's or Gate open up in a neighborhood just to hear the volume on the speakers stating "Welcome to X, Pump 4 is ready for you". Yeah, that's quality Urban living!

Easy, take a look at ariels around North Riverside, South Jacksonville, Brooklyn, Oakland and LaVilla before and after the Jacksonville Expressway was built... and later expanded, then expanded some more and now about to expand even more.  Look at the property (that's left) around this monster of a noisy invasive road and you can clearly see massive decline.

Try asking someone living in Waterleaf off Kernan if they want a highway overpass soaring directly over their subdivision with huge winding exit ramps that knock out existing homes... see how they think that will improve their neighborhood.

I don't mind living next to one if it's well designed and well complimented with the surrounding settings.  The freeways in Jacksonville DO NOT DO THAT.  The urban freeways in Jacksonville divide neighborhoods rather than compliment them.  These things should be no larger than 4 lanes.  It's main purpose should be to allow out of town visitors to arrive and see the city and hopefully cause them to want to stop by and visit.  They can also be used as corridors for trucks to bring in goods to the urban core.

People who live in the city should not be using them for their daily transportation needs.  They should be using other methods of transit (boulevards, streetcars, buses, light rail, etc) while leaving the highways for use for our own of town guests or freight needs.

Why in the world would you have a freeway designed like that?  Freeways don't need these big giant exits if their main purpose is to serve out of town visitors and freight.
