I signed it! I loved St. Johns Ferry.

One thing I wish the website didn't show the "Job and Payroll Losses" as the first reason in that list. Lot of people don't care about 33 paying jobs in contrast to over thousands of people unemployed in this time of the economy.

They should emphasize on few reasons that would be beneficial to the public because no one is going to read all that s*** down the webpage and waste their time. Honestly... really.

The only way I'd support saving the ferry is if a glass bottom was installed.

If they can find a private contractor who will take it over and charge what it takes to make a profit, so be it.  I don't see that it has enough value to the community at large to justify tax dollars being spent on it.

+++10000000

Absolutely TUFSU1, Governor Crist dumped this STATE RESPONSIBILITY on the backs of Jacksonville's citizens and the State should man up and continue the service, cruise port or no port.

The ferry is a bargain... According to some media "it loses," $650,000 dollars per year. That's an interesting number to cry over as JUST THE PAINT on the recent Dames Point Bridge contract cost us $13,000,000. Doing the math this means one could operate the ferry for 20 years for the cost of paint! Oh and guess what? That damn bridge gets more then paint each maintenance cycle.

Anyone new to this thread, go to the start and SIGN THE PETITION.

Okay, i'll try to DRILL this in my head even though imma disagree with myself........Highways, cars, buses, suburban developments even if they are successful are BAD!!!! Boats, trains of any types, peoplemovers etc, even if they are an obvious detriment  financially are GOOD!!! If a private company steps in and run the Ferry fine, otherwise why should the city waste money on this thing, just because it's been around for a long time, and it's given the 'tradition' label? It would be doomsday on this site the DOT talked about building a well needed highway in Jax, because I know, trolleys are the answer to  EVERYTHING!!! I have never seen such a bias agenda on a website in my life; That's okay though, atleast yall are consistent.

The ferry has always been treated differently than the other river crossings in the county.  Should it be?  Back in the pre-Hazouri days when we had 4 toll bridges didn't the tolls more than cover the capital and O&M costs of those bridges?

Virtually impossible in Florida now. We passed several house bills and a constitutional amendment banning eminent domain for private purposes, following Kelo v City of New London.

Didn't I just read something in the paper about the FSDB in St. Augustine - a 'public' school with very 'private' purpose.

What's virtually impossible?  JTA has eminent domain authority.

Of course. I think that JTA could take the property for use as a port though.

A port would not be under their purview. That would be the Port.

^ JaxPort has eminent domain powers too.

That said, JTA could easily be handed the ferry...and yes, they could use eminent domain powers as needed for the ferry and ancillary transportation purposes (including adjacent development).

Sort of. I'd imagine that would be debatable as to whether a terminal built just to serve Carnival Cruise lines (obviously a private business) would be considered a public purpose. It very well might not fly, the law has changed significantly since emininent domain was really booming. The ferry is a good example, let's say the port authority needed extra land for a new ferry dock, they could take the neighborhing property through eminent domain because the ferry clearly is a public use. A private cruise ship, or a publicly-funded facility that serves nothing but private cruise ships, would be very debatable. If they need to build a highway, or a school, or whatever, that's all fine too, those are public purposes.

House votes to overturn eminent domain ruling:

QuoteHouse votes to overturn Supreme Court decision on eminent domain
By Pete Kasperowicz - 02/28/12 05:19 PM ET

The House on Tuesday afternoon approved legislation that overturns a 2005 Supreme Court decision that affirmed the ability of states to take control of private property under the doctrine of eminent domain and hand it to another private developer.
