Title: JU-UNF game
Post by: Tacachale on February 23, 2012, 11:46:28 AM

Tomorrow night is the JU-UNF men's basketball game downtown at the Arena. This game and the one hosted by UNF are the biggest of the year for both of Jax's universities.

This should be a fun game. UNF has really come into its own over the past two seasons, but has never beaten JU away. JU has struggled this season, but have been on a tear recently and still have a chance to make the conference playoffs if they win.

This is a cool homegrown event downtown.

Yes, I'm really looking forward to it.  Unfortunately I was out of town and had to miss the first game - I heard it was a great scene on the court after the game ended.  I'm not missing it this time.

I really feel like UNF is a sleeping giant when it comes to athletics. JU is hamstrung by being a small, private school and does pretty well considering they have much less money than the schools they compete against. And they have no capable on-campus facility for basketball.

UNF on the other hand, has many built in advantages in being a public university and having a great on-campus facility. UNF has had a basketball program for less than 20 years and has gone from Div II to Div I. Since becoming a full time Div I member in the conference, they have been competitive in the Atlantic Sun. With Belmont leaving next season, I would not be surprised to see UNF become one of the premier teams in the conference.

So Tacachale... care to make a friendly wager on the game (one I know I'll lose) and make things interesting????

Some frat boy tried talking crap to me at the game earlier in the season.  I was like, really?  It's only been what... a decade except for last season's (fluke  ;) )conference tourney win that you've beaten UNF.  LOL.

I'll be there like almost every JU game.  This season, the bartender at the Everbank Arena Club(Green/Gold room) has gotten to know me very well, lol.  It's been a rough season.   :)  Ol Cliff needs to be getting some talent in for next season.... and more importantly take a cue from East Tennessee and Belmont(who recruit mostly local kids) and stop UNF from stealing all these local guys!!!!  I do think McDougal and Admir will start to blossom next year, but we're not getting enough of the local kids... and UNF seems to be doing just fine in that department.  It's like we're still recovering from losing out on Shaquille Johnson.
Really, if UNF doesn't win the conference next year with Belmont gone... it would be a monumental dissapointment, IMO.

I played soccer at a D2 school in the Carolinas and North Florida wasn't a formidable D2 program 10-13 years ago.

I'm trying to make it out tomorrow, but I don't know if i'll be able to. At any rate, I'll take any wager that involves beer, especially of the homegrown variety, this being a homegrown rivalry and all. What are your terms, sir?

JU's roster is very young. I think they could really come back next year - in time for Belmont to get out of both schools' mutual hair.

Well they're certainly not experienced, but hey at least they're not talented :)

This freshman class hasn't been impressive at all.  I think that Bogus kid could be a decent shooter(he certainly moves well without the ball, can't play D though)... but UNF has a really strong recruiting class next year.
Kennesaw State(of all people) are actually getting two strong Jax kids next year too.  Dont know why Warren doesn't have a better relationship with all the AAU guys and ESPECIALLY ACD coaches.

They don't serve local beer at the game, but two local pints at your choice of local watering hole is my offer...

Let the record show, if the Ospreys complete a glorious sweep of JU tomorrow night, I shall receive two pints of People's Pale Ale, and he shall receive my sympathies. Should the Dolphins somehow eke out a win, he will receive two drinks of his choice as well as my surprised congratulations. :D

I was going to say that "that Graham kid" played well at the UNF game, but now I realize I was thinking of the Graham who's a senior, not the one who's a freshman. Well, maybe it'll will rub off on him.

Yeah, that's number 21 in the picture above(originally an LSU signee).  Delwan Graham.  The king of garbage time points.  He actually has been a dissapointment this season, although he has been battling back injuries.

The freshmen Erwin Graham has looked lost at times with zero confidence.  He seems to get lost and gets in the way of the high ball screens Cliff loves to run.  Cabell at least flashed some last year and has blossomed this year.

Maybe he'll blossom, but for the promise last year we all heard about this huge freshman class... it hasn't really looked like it's had much substance so far.  I just haven't seen many flashes from this huge freshman class.

There will be two local potential recruits in attendance tonight.  Hopefully we can show them a good time.  One is buillt a lot like Ayron Hardy.  He'd be a great get.  Can never have too many athletic guys with long arms, especially in this conference where it could create great mismatches.

'Glorius sweep'  Oh, you UNF guys sure have a lot of catching up to do  ;)

A man of my word, just be ready to pay up once the upset happens, lol.  If Driscoll allows Andy Diaz and Glenn Powell to go at it one on one... we could see a pretty entertaining game b/c that would create a lot of outshide shots for that skinny kid Parker and Aloys Cabell.

Go Phins!!!!!
