For more than 30 years Jacksonville’s airport officials have sought to extend the runway at Craig Field with no success.

But they moved one step closer Thursday at a meeting of the City Council’s Land Use and Zoning Committee, which voted 4-3 to approve the extension.

Council members Mia Jones, Denise Lee, Art Shad and Jack Webb voted for the extension. Council members Richard Clark, Michael Corrigan and Clay Yarborough opposed it.

Strictly speaking, the vote Thursday night was by the City Council Land Use and Zoning (LUZ) Committee.  I think the Zoning Board voted against the comp plan change a few weeks ago - despite the favorable (for the extension) report from Planning Staff.

Your memory serves you correctly Charles.

The Planning Department supports the comp plan change; the Planning Commission voted against it; and the Land Use and Zoning Board voted to support the comp plan change last night.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out in front of the full council Tuesday night, and whether or not those council members who fought against the Cecil Field project on the westside will support the Arlington residents in their fight against extending the runway at Craig airfield.

Although, I am not affected by the runway extension, I will be watching this issue as it is being considered by the Council (streaming live on my computer on Tuesday night), as I am affected by government officials who can't keep promises.
