Title: Police Activity at McDuff and Donald
Post by: Crazy Cat Lady on January 29, 2012, 08:05:30 PM
Just curious if anyone knows what happened on McDuff Ave and Donald St on Sunday afternoon at about 4:45pm.  We had cops blocking the entrance of vehicles on Donald Street between Lydia and Syndey along with police tape. I was coming to my home on Donald Street and could not drive my car to my house.  I asked the cop and all he said is that they had received information.  The cops were there for about 30 minutes with guns drawn.  There were also about 4 cops on McDuff in the same area.  Know we have had some crime in the area but does anyone know more?

Why is Mcduff in Avondale shut down by the JSO?

Kim Melton Jenkins One of the police officers said there was a mentally ill man with a gun in one of the houses around here, not sure which but, I know they got him.

North of Park I'd say that the boundary between Riverside and Avondale is Lee HS not King St.  But it's all subjective.  I claim to live in Avondale, but the tax assessor has me living in Riverside Heights.

Just this past Friday, I was biking towards the I-10 overpass on S McDuff Avenue and kept hearing sirens for a good 10-15 minutes. I get past the overpass and to the left there were several JSO & Highway Patrol (I would say atleast 10-15) with a building surrounded, and 1 male in custody. I didn't stay around very long to find out what happened, but none of the news or the paper covered it at all. I'm only guessing here, that it might've been a chase? Who knows.

I would not bet my life on this place not slipping along to a state of decline

McDuff itself, with the apartments that line the road from 17 to a block past park street, has always been a bit seedy. Low rents in the buildings and easy access from the hood make it a good target for robbers and such. Bored school kids sometimes get in on the act (had to call the cops on several smoking dope in the vacant house next door yesterday as a matter of fact.) So I don't think it's a matter of the area "slipping" as much as "It's always kinda been that way."

A long time ago I lived on Downing Street, around the corner from McDuff.  It was okay back then, but not great.
