Title: Dancy Terrace: Flash Mob Cleanup
Post by: movedsouth on January 11, 2012, 07:17:11 AM
This is an idea that came up yesterday. Dancy terrace is a "a mess". In particular along 9th and in the alleys, it looks like someone dumped trash cans or dumpster content from the nearby fast food places to go through it. I want to try out a new approach:

If you got 15-30 minutes today, lets meet at Dancy Terrace at 7pm. Bring a light, one or two contractor trash bags and maybe something to help pick up trash. I will have some extra trash bags in case you don't have them. Everybody fills a bag or two, and takes it with them. Tomorrow (Thursday) is trash pickup at the east side, so all you need to do is leave it in front of your house.

I will bring a few extra bags and gloves, and for those living at the west side (we had our trash pickup on Tuesday), maybe we can find some houses on the east side volunteering some trash space.

we will meet at the 9th street side (half way between Main and Hubbard) as this is the side that needs the most help. And there will be a raffle of a found Krystal gift card with unknown remaining value.

It was actually quite fun.  Movedsouth says 20 people showed up, but it had to be more than that.  It looked to me like 30 including kids.  In thirty minutes we had the whole place cleaned up, both alleys and down the center. (Easier, b/c others had cleaned up some piles earlier in the day).

JSO showed up, first one car and then two more.    I think they were a bit confused -- dozens of folks wandering around in the dark with flashlights placing objects in dark plastic bags.

Then JSO joined us -- helping shine some light and walking down between the buildings.

I think we taught the kids something here which will benefit them all of their lives.  See a problem?  Do what you can to fix it.

Thanks movedsouth for organizing.

When I first arrived, there was about 5-6 guys sitting out front, I don't think they liked my sitting there, so they all got up and scattered off. Once the others arrived, it was like a swat team...we rolled right through the grounds, and when we were finished, we even loaded up the trash and took it with us. Now that's what I call a clean up by neighbors who prefer to be part of the solution.

What's going on with this place? I know that a couple years ago, they were apparently trying to sell some of these units. They were priced at something like a few hundred to a couple grand. Now it looks like they're all condemned. Any idea?

After the original investor went under, the banks auction the place off a cottage at a time. There are now about a dozen owners. Some haven't seen the place. Further, the way it is zoned and organized (it is a PUD with the actually "REdell Street" in the middle being private), the center units are essentially landlocked.

For anything to happen, the owners need to get together and work together, or someone needs to be able to buy them all.

"Each house is currently priced at $189,900 with monthly fees for property maintenance coming in at well under $100."

Holy hell! No joke, I saw them around 2 years ago listed for a couple grand. And when I say " a couple", I mean that literally. Whether or not they sold for that I don't know, but still. Pretty big difference from $189K. That's a pretty shocking number for those places in any economy.

^ People were drunk with speculation at the time.
