Title: My experience at The Fox
Post by: Jaxson on December 30, 2011, 11:02:55 AM
Having heard great things about The Fox in Avondale, I always wanted to see what all of the hype was about.  Since then, I have had more than my share of omelettes, french toast and other items at this eatery.  I enjoyed the coffee service that was available when the queue ran out of the front door on busy weekend mornings and appreciated the friendliness of the owner as he chatted with his customers.
Yesterday, I brought an out-of-town friend to The Fox.  She is from Naples and she was delighted by our trip around Five Points, Riverside and Avondale.  What turned our day trip into something less than fun was the service that we received at The Fox.  We got the food in a quick manner but the waiter forgot to bring the butter and jelly to go with our toast.  I politely asked him to bring us butter when he passed our table.  He returned in a minute and brusquely threw the butter on our table.
I mention this because there are those who say that The Fox is overrated and that they have not had very good experiences at this place.  For the record, I called The Fox and explained that our service was not the best first impression for a newbie from Naples.  The owner apologized and explained that the holidays are a high-pressure period and that he further apologized for the service being a casualty of this holiday rush.  I accepted the apology, saying that this was the only time that I had this kind of experience.  I appreciate this honesty and hope to return to The Fox another day...

Your experience closely resembles the two times I have dined there... I have stopped going.

I've only been twice myself, but the last time we went my girlfriend suggested giving up our table to an older couple that was waiting in line and move to the counter to eat. That same older couple wound up buying our breakfast for us. Totally surreal experience.

The food is your typical breakfast fare (how many ways can you make bacon eggs and ham ya know?) but it has a special vibe to the place. Maybe it's the 80's music that's usually playing.

I'll say this, after living in exile off Baymeadows road for the past 6 months there's a reason like joints like the fox are so popular in town. They're just different. It's "scene' man. The hip breakfast scene, yeah! It beats an IHOP. Or a Village Inn. Or a Dennys. It's more about the ambiance than the food.

Went there once, no desire to return. You're right, it's absolutely a scene place, it's just one that I have absolutely no desire to be around. The food was right up there with waffle house, not sure why the place has such a buzz about it other than being in a busy location.

Honestly never having visited The Fox in all my years here.(I cook mean Breakfast)
How does "The Crazy Egg" on Edgewood Ave compare to The Fox?

Crazy Egg isn't too bad but I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like they've raised their prices. I really think my two favorite places for breakfast out are Uptown (haven't been there in a while since we've moved out of Springfield) and Metro. Metro isn't perfect but we usually go either before or after the big rush (never on weekends- yikes). Metro makes the absolute best potatoes I've ever had- a plate of their loaded homefries will keep you full past lunch.

The Fox is one of the best small restaurants in town. They do get slammed during breakfast and lunch rush..which is a good thing. Just go off rush if you want to avoid the crowds. It is very much worth it. Ian, Mary and staff do a Damn fine job. Have a Coyote Burger and you shall see...
