Title: Sears to close 100 to 120 Kmart, Sears stores
Post by: thelakelander on December 27, 2011, 09:35:44 AM
Let's just hope the Regency Sears won't end up on this list.

QuoteRetailer blames terrible holiday season, especially for big-ticket items

Between 100 and 120 Sears and Kmart stores will be closed, the retailer said Tuesday, after terrible holiday sales during what is the most crucial time of the year for retailers.

Sears has yet to determine which stores will be closed, but there has been a clear shift in where the retailer will devote its resources.

The company is moving away from its practice of propping up "marginally performing" stores in hopes of improving their performance. Sears said it will now concentrate on cash-generating stores.

Sears at Regency should have moved in to the old Ivy's/Montgomery Ward spot to be closer to the "foot action" in that mall. Its current location leaves it in BFE with little traffic.

I hope either. The Sears in Regency holds alot of history dating back to when it was downtown. That would be heartbreaking.

Sears probably owns the building, they are located in. I sure hope they dont close. Regency Mall needs a major revamping. Perfect location for a semi-demolition and conversion into a true mixed-use project. Belk and Penny's seem to be doing ok at the mall.

I'd be surprised if that Sears survived the cut. I'd be surprised if ANY Sears survive for much longer. Their stores feel outdated and unkempt, their customer service is terrible, and the appliances they sell are a lot junkier than they used to be.

And Kmart? Good grief. The one on Beach near University feels like it's haunted by the ghosts of whatever burial mound sits under the gigantic parking lot.

I agree. Sears has lost its bang. Growing up Sears was the place to shop. To me, they didnt do much to re-brand or revamp themselves to keep up with competitors. The sears now, seems to be the same sears from 20 years ago and thats not good. As an adult, I have never bought anything out of Sears. I dont even know what they sell. I just usually walk through it to get to other stores.

I dont think I have ever purchased anything from Sears. Love K-mart so easy to get in and out of there, probably b/c everyone else is in Walmart.

As a kid in the 1980s and early 90s I remember going to Kmart quite a bit. The few times I've been as an adult have not been positive experiences. I mean, I've found cheap stuff, but let's just say the stores didn't seem real "healthy."

Closing a bunch of stores isn't usually a sign of health. Their stock took a beating this morning. Their sales look especially bad compared with other retail chains. It smells like the beginning of the end for Sears unless they make some major changes.

If the Regency store closes, maybe that Lunar Golf place can take it over. THAT would be awesome.

You would think that the ultimate catalogue and mail order retailer in history would be able to adapt to internet purchasing.

Awe man I loved their "wishbook" for christmas. Me and sibilings used to circle everything we wanted and would give to me my mom and dad.

I can't think of anything that sears has that you can't get somewhere else, usually cheaper. Their electronics are a joke, best buy sells appliances (kenmore tends to be garbage now, my aunt outfitted her kitchen with all kenmore stuff a couple of years ago and they've all had numerous issues). Tools can be had at any number of places. The regency and avenues stores are honestly kinda depressing. Sears just kinda resides in the middle of every road and there just isn't a need for it anymore- they can't offer anything unique.

I'm happy with their tools and do prefer them to others. We have been able to use credit with discounts for home appliances, although we dont use kenmore after hearing numerous comments like yours. At times, its convenient, but i agree with some judiciousness, you can do better with other competition.

Here's the full closing list: http://searsholdings.com/about/122711_close.pdf

However, this only adds up to 79.  Sears is expected to announce the closure of up to 40 more soon.
