From the Jaxdailyrecord.com :
The Hutchinson-Suddath Building on East Bay Street is now officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places as of Oct. 3. Mayor John Peyton was notified of the designation last month by the Keeper of the National Register in Washington, D.C. The Southern Ferro Concrete Company built the building in 1910. In 1931 it was purchased by the Suddath Moving and Storage Co.
Suddath is that old!?
Doesn't a federal designation like this prevent a city from demolishing the building? I don't know much about the federal register in regard to commercial properties or if it changes if the property is city owned. I'd like more information if anyone has it.
It does prevent it from being demolished, well short of an act of Congress. :)

A property only needs to be 50 years old to qualify. In some cases, probably even taht can be waived.

As I understand it, it provides NO protection from demolition per se. It provides recognition, tax credits for rehab (the best part) and protection from a FEDERAL agency or arm from detracting from the historic nature.
I'm not an expert on the subject, but that is my general understanding.

Yup. I did know that much and that if the age doesn't meet qualification, it only needs to be of "historical significance." For instance, if there were a building built today in the style of the twin towers as a reminder of 9/11, that may apply for federal historical recognition.
Does anybody have a picture of that old thing?
Its the yellow brick building on the right

cool. thanks lake. what a great home (or several homes) that would make. Can you see yourself living at a place like that?
I could, but not with kids. I'm a rowhouse type of guy. By the way, the building next door is being renovated into lofts right now.
Did the city offer any tax dollars to the project?
Its been a while, but I think some sort of incentive may have been given.

It is a neat old building. Perhaps the club idea, but also perhaps mixed-use and residential. =)
