Title: JaxPort gets $10 million for work on railroad yard
Post by: thelakelander on December 12, 2011, 09:53:52 PM
Jax finally won some TIGER grant money!

QuoteThe Jacksonville Port Authority will get a $10 million federal grant for a railroad yard where cargo containers will be transferred between ships and trains.
JaxPort had sought $25 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the $45 million project, with state funds expected to pay the rest of the cost.
JaxPort officials said the federal support helps advance the project, but project still faces a significant funding gap.

Is this Plan A or Plan B?

This is a part of Plan A.  There is no Plan B.

What is interesting is that Mayor Brown is the head of all mayors leading a charge for port growth. So while he got some, not all, he did defend this as a "Public/Private" partnership. Where is CSX's investment, after all, this will benefit them and shut out NS.

Good point mtrain.

No offense, my guess is JAXPORT is too insignificant to CSX to warrant them throwing their money into the pot this soon.  Has anyone considered if CSX is funding similar rail facilities in other ports across the country?  If they are, its probably because the ROI is significantly better.  Better start fleshing out that Plan B.....

With that said, open this thing up to NS (they already said, they want to grow their business here but don't have port access) and FEC and the city would have a better chance at the private sector filling in the gap.  I know CSX is the local company (actually FEC is too), but shutting the other rail carriers out isn't the best move for JAXPORT if it is to compete against the Savannah's of the East Coast.

my understanding is that funds above the $45 million (more is needed) would be coming from the private sector.

Also note that, as of noon today, this was the only Florida project funded in this round

Is there a link of the full list of awards?  I'm interest to see what type of projects were funded across the country.

I believe my co-worker has a link to USDOT list....as we submitted an application for a project in northwest Florida...but I don't know what the link is...that said, I don't think all grants have been announced yet

A complete list has not been posted yet on the website however I do know that a Cincinatti streetcar project was funded as well as a multimodal center in Illinois (there were three projects in Illinois that got TIGER III grants).

Here is a larger list.  The announcement on TIGER III grant winners will be made tomorrow.

QuoteA number of TIGER III grant announcements are leaking out in advance of the official USDOT announcement.  USDOT is required by law to notify Senate and House Appropriations Committee Members three days prior to a USDOT announcement.  In many cases, those early announcements leak out before USDOT can make its announcement, which is expected on late Wednesday , more likely Thursday morning.  Note: e-newsletter subscribers will receive the complete list of awards soon.  See the green box at right to sign up.

Below are the awards leaked so far. I’ll be updating this story on the website as more awards are revealed. If you know of an award please contact me and I’ll add it.

+1

Agreed, NS has a nice yard on the northside and a great partnership with FEC. If we are going to be an aggregate port, FEC has a nice Agg business going with limestone from south florida. Open the business up! I also see a lot or UP motive power leading its way over the St. Johns, so UP/NS could provide that west to east and east/west link for our great city! I am sure CSX does the same, they all probably work together, but I like seeing yellow and black roll over the river.

Right.  With two carriers coming in there will be a wider array of origins and destinations, plus price competition.  Lack of this puts Jacksonville at a disadvantage to other ports, such as those in Virginia.
