Title: New Duval courthouse more user friendly; move-in 6 months away
Post by: thelakelander on November 14, 2011, 10:39:07 PM
QuoteAs for design, Schneider illustrated how jury deliberation rooms are placed directly beside jury boxes and have a side exit that will keep jurors from exiting right past a defendant whose case they just rendered a verdict, as they do now.

Outside the courtroom, Schneider said the public should benefit from improved signal reception on the cell phones. Radio signals throughout the building will also be advantageous for security personnel.

Seating for 50 in the cafe will be an expansion from the five stools placed against a counter on the wall at the snack bar in the current courthouse.

Regular court will be down for five working days during the nine-day move in May, though one courtroom will remain open for emergency hearings. The clerk’s office will maintain a skeleton crew that will be available for filings. Filings also can be made at the clerk’s beaches branch at 1543 Atlantic Blvd. in Neptune Beach.

Schneider said the new complex, about 76 percent complete, will be finished by the May deadline. The courthouse building will fall just under its $250 million budget, he said, the largest chunk of the complex’s overall budget of $350 million.

^Great, so they kept all the things that were going to be present when it was only a few million over budget, now that it's $150 million over budget. Good work, Peyton.
