QuoteJACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 53-year-old man was killed Monday night after he was struck by a Jacksonville Transportation Authority bus on the Eastside.
Police said the bus stopped in the 900 block of Bridier Street at about 8:30 p.m., and the driver got off to assist a passenger, Alexander Gibbs, off the bus.
When the driver got back in and began to drive off, she forgot the bus' wheels were still turned to the right, and the bus jumped the curb, struck two signs, a fence and ran over Gibbs before coming to stop after hitting an oak tree.
Witnesses said the bus accelerated and would have hit a nearby adult living facility if it hadn't struck the tree. Those who knew Gibbs said he lived at the facility.
"The bus just took an immediate right and the curb kept it from maybe 3 feet from going, and as soon as it got past the curb, it just took a hard right," said witness Robert Booher, who was a friend of Gibbs. "I think there was a little panic involved, because like I said, the bus sped up, and if it wasn't for that tree, she would have got us up on the porch."
