Title: Jerry Spinks, reverred preservationist, passes silently into the night
Post by: fieldafm on October 25, 2011, 02:43:51 PM
Just got word that Mr Jerry Spinks passed away Tuesday night.

Mr Spinks was heavily involved with the historical and arts communities in Jacksonville.

He also was instrumental in giving us access to Hogans Creek for various cleanup efforts for which I will be forever grateful.

He will be greatly missed.

Jerry was an amazing man and an icon in the preservation community.  He headed up Riverside-Avondale's annual luminaria event for many, many years.  How bittersweet Luminaria will be this year with Jerry's passing.

I'm glad that we had the Great Neighborhood celebration last year for Riverside Avondale.

It recognized one of his stellar achievements, and it's also how I got to know him.

I got to know Jerry after being nominated to the Board of the Jacksonville Historical Society and during the mayor's race earlier this year.  He'll be missed.  He had big dreams and a grand vision for St. Luke's Hospital as a museum and historic archives site.  It's going to be up to the rest of us to make that vision a reality.

I first met Jerry at the JCCI River Dance study. And more recently with activities and clean ups at Hogans Creek. A super guy. I have tremendous respect for the man and what he has done. Lake there is no doubt that you will continue to carry that vision with others that he has shared with the museum and archive site.  It was just recently that I got to talk with him and there was one opportunity  that he showed  me some of the items in the casket factory.

My sincere condolences to his family.

Oh man :(  ... I am so sorry to hear this. Jerry was a good man and did much for this community, and of course tireless work for historic preservation.  I had the good fortune of shaking hands with him once at a meeting about Annie Lytle.  He was always optimistic about the future of the School.  I will definitely miss him, and convey my deepest sympathy to his family.

Man.. hearing this sure dimmed my day :(.
