Title: What ever happened to protesting?
Post by: duvaldude08 on October 06, 2011, 04:12:45 PM
My mom and I was having a conversation and the question came up. Why dont citizens protest anymore? She was saying how in the 50's, 60's etc. how protesting was wide spread. And its like now we just call and send emails to let our "voice" be heard. Its like we let the U.S. and sometime the local government run over us and do nothing. OR just we send emails.  What happened? I know protesting still occurs, but it rare. Especially on a local level. Any thoughts on this?

Have you been looking at the news lately? Seen anything from NY's Wall Street?

Well there is an occupy America protest going on in most major cities as we type.  There is even an occupy Jacksonville protest you can join.

I do think you have a point but not very timely.

And what ever happened to alcoholic beverage companies stepping up to the plate and buying up remaining NFL tickets to avoid local blackouts?? We sure could use that support.

There are construction worker protests every day in Atlanta.  They occasionally "picket" but normally just form a line and handout bs flyers.  They are a block down from my office building, in Midtown, and in downtown.  Most of the construction workers here are Hispanic, white, and even Native American if you can believe it (steel working has been something they have done for generations now).  Crazily, every protester is always black and they represent such a small minority of the workers on the skyscrapers.  I say, if it were really that bad, I would be seeing a much more diverse representation out there.

There are also protests in front of the Fed here occasionally.  I actually almost joined one just to entertain myself about a year ago.  I don't know, nothing is huge, but I do see protests about every 2-3 days somewhere about something.  Probably a quarter of my fraternity went to DC a couple years ago for a really large protest (and of course the same crowd went to Obama's inauguration).

A trend is also for community organizer [agitators] to round up homeless and disheveled and disparate people to form protests.  They'll tell people what to say.  They'll even hand out protest T-Shirts/sweatshirts and signs to the people.

Speaking for myself, I have NO time for protests.  All these people who are protesting make me wonder how they even have time.  I have a job and I am still putting my resume out there and applying to jobs in 5 minute breaks here and there.  I have a 7:30 meeting with one of my mentors today, and then up to work.  I don't understand protesting, only action.

I think if you lived in DC you would see A LOT of protests and large gatherings.  For everyone else, it's probably just a factor of how large the city is and how liberal it is.  If you go to Atlanta and Miami, you can see protests there, but everywhere else in the south is probably too "quiet" and conservative to really provide the right environment and enough people for protests.

I would like to go protest for the Mobility Fee but honestly I own a business and do not have time Tuesday.
