Title: Adel Supermarket
Post by: downtownjag on September 30, 2011, 04:14:04 PM
Springfielders & historians,

I am curious about the Adel Supermarket on Main St.  Not the newer building with the yellow fascade, but the green one that sits off the road.

Anyone have any pics or history on the building?  What do they do in there today, I'm afraid to walk in...

Thanks

Don't be afraid to walk in.

I was in there about a year ago.  A friend of mine sold stuff to stores, (I think like crackers and stuff).  They sell to distributors.

It is a FABULOUS building.

It is a fabulous building. I hope someday it will be something special. LOVE the exterior. I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure in the past it was an A&P. I believe when I was a kid I went there when it was an A&P. I will not be offended if I am corrected so let me know if anyone else remembers the same.

I think it was an IGA back in the 80's? I remember going there with my grandfather all the time. Used to be pinkish-red in color, I think.

Probably not exactly what you mean, but here's the google street view of it:

I think if they had a paint job it would look MUCH more inviting.

I agree that with a facelift/restoration, it would be great! A throwback grocery store or sold and remodeled by a major grocer would be nice. I wish we had some older pics of it!

Anybody have a picture of this place, I think I know the place your talking about and I agree, it will make a great something or other someday if they don't blow it up.

Hey Lake, "Shirley we have a photo or two...?"

I know, I know, "don't call me Shirley."

It indeed used to be an IGA supermarket back in the 1980s.  My parents had friends who lived over there and I used to walk around the neighborhood with the friends' children.  If we had any spare change, we dropped in on the IGA for a soda or candy...
