Urban Neighborhoods: New Town

Developed during the first decade of the 20th century, New Town is a traditional African-American working class community and the focus of a major neighborhood revitalization initiative. During its early years, the neighborhood enjoyed considerable growth due to a streetcar line that ran down Kings Road and the presence of multiple rail lines throughout the area. Surrounded on the West, South and East by industrial uses, the majority of the community was employed in the industrial and railroad sectors.

Nice article. the 1926 era two story on Fairfax reminds me of the two story structure that was next to Hogans Creek on Washington and Beaver that was bulldozed down.
The hoops that one would go through to both live and have a commercial use out of that structure. Just curious?
I've always wanted to go into that fish market. There's a fried chicken place around here too I've passed by many times on Beaver that I need to hit up as well. Anyone been to either?
BTW, how boring is typical 21st century development (the last few pictures) compared to the old stuff?? It's about 100 times more interesting. Man, we really make some crap nowadays.

There are several initiatives going on to revitalize this area....TransForm Jax has been asked by HabiJax to help identify strategic opportunities over the next few years....we are very excited about this!
Im not sure if anyone has heard, but there a rumor that EWC is finally building a football stadium. My mom overheard that EWC actually owns the property that James Weldon Johnson is on. The football stadium is supposed to be built there. Im not sure if there are going to tear down the school, or build around it and incorporate in the design, but that is the current rumor. Can someone confirm this?
Good job and as the Director of the New Town Success Zone I appreciate the work you put into telling the story of the area. Also, EWC does not own the property that JWJ sits on. The property is still owned by DCPS.
