I noticed the coming soon sign yesterday in the old Subway storefront for Domo crepes, i'm excited to try them and I think they'll be a great addition to the area.
AMAZING
You're about to make my wife a happy woman...as soon as I forward this to her. Thanks!
Yes!!!
Fond memories of Paris! Buckwheat crepes with cheese from sidewalk stands; made while you watch. Terrific!
I had heard that it was going to be another coffee shop and was shaking my head.
Great to have something different.
Paris..1999..november...crepes for breakfast lunch and dinner...all off of the same cart and the best i've ever had...mmmgood.
Crepes!?! I've heard of these creations before, but someone remind me - Do they taste more like pizza or sushi?

Actually, they're closer to frozen yogurt :D
In all seriousness though, this sounds like a great addition to the 'hood.

@ Non-Redneck Westsider ---> +100!
For such an imaginative and creative neighborhood, one would think that Riverside-Avondale would have more to offer than just another sushi place. Don't get me wrong, I like sushi, but overkill is overkill...
Strangely enough, even with 5 (I'm including the 2 in the Publix center on Roosevelt) in the area, I usually don't stray from Sake House. I'm thinking the other 4 have the same kind of loyalty from their customer base as well, or they wouldn't be there any longer.
And honestly, I'm thinking that there's so much markup in the sushi that they don't require a lot of business to cover the costs. 1/2 - 3/4 oz of tuna for $3 = PROFIT$
Did the sign happen to say when they plan on opening? I'll try and run by there some time and answer my own question, and if/when I do come back and post.
We've had crepes in Paris and they were very good, but the absolute best crepes I ever had were in Nantes. I haven't had enough of a sampling to really be considered an expert, so I'll need to make a few more trips... :D

Hey, sign maker! It's dinner.
Looking forward to their opening.
They couldn't open soon enough....
A quality crepe place that's open late is a ridiculously awesome addition to the neighborhood.

seriously stoked about this opening, been a long time coming.... now only if we can get a knock-off of the Floridian in St. Aug, or the Top in Gainesville to round out our five-points dining selections...
Excited for a Crepe outlet... think they need a better name. How about:
"Hide your kids - Hide your wife - cuz they're Crêpe'N everybody out here"
I think this place is going to open up much sooner than anyone expected..
Walked by yesterday, saw them giving their next door neighbors samples. When I peeked in the window, there was already tables, chairs, and stuff on the walls.
YAY
damn how did i miss this! nice.
Domo Crepes ETC is OPEN!!!
^Nice perhaps I will make it tomorrow.
It's open. Went there last night. Fantastic. Really surprised how quickly and nicely they revamped the inside of that old place. Beautiful, and a great product!
Look forward to going back ASAP. Seriously guys, go! We need this place.
Thanks for the information about the opening. I plan to go very soon!
Excellent - now I know what I'm having for lunch today!

Thanks Ben. I had asked that b/c the sign confused me at first. It should have been "Breakfast, Lunch, DINNER" , not diner.
At least the sign-maker didn't murder any apostrophes!
New Owner, (I know you're reading this)
Your sign reads crepes, coffee , flats, panini, soups, and a wine bar. Here we go again. Please be a crepe shop and be a great crepe shop. The space is not that big. Don't try to do all this trendy cuisine half assed at the expense of what will probably make you something great and unique for all of Jacksonville.

Usually I'd agree with you. In this case, and maybe because I've tried the place, I really don't feel like they're trying to do too much (their sign may be, though). They do crepes, and they do them well. The rest of the food seems to fit nicely w/ that motif. If they did crepes, and crepes only, something tells me they wouldn't be able to afford to keep that business running (this isn't exactly a street vendor in Paris)...especially in Jacksonville. A food truck could survive w/ this business model, but not a storefront like Domo's.
Something tells me you haven't tried the place. Go try it. Their menu is a single (double-sided) page. I've only tried the crepes, but from what I hear, the rest of their menu is solid.
Went in for breakfast this morning, the place is completely transformed, very cool look to it now. You seriously would lose money on a bet if someone tried to tell you this was the old Subway. But pictures are worth 1000 words, so here you go;

In addition the the crepes that you would expect, they do these flatbread breakfast pizzas they call "breakfast flats" which are pretty tasty, that's what I ordered. Veggies on it were fresh, and the flat itself is stone-ground wheat, very healthy, I guess to make up for the 2,000 calories worth of egg, hollandaise, and other yummy stuff on top. But that was my fault for ordering the fattening stuff, not theirs, lol. The flatbread itself was tasty, but not quite baked 100% of the way through, so it was a little doughy. The Hollandaise and everything on top of it was done perfectly though. They are still catching their stride. I was very pleased with the meal overall. Pic;

How many free refills do you get on a cup of coffee? ;D
I went with a few people this morning at 10am. The waitress brought us menus, but I was looking for the items with eggs, and didn't see any. I asked the waitress and she said, "oh do you want a breakfast menu?"
Besides waiting 55 minutes for our food, the food was good. Also, the price on the menu didn't match the bill, our flats on the menu were $4.09 (which I thought was pretty cheap) but when the bill came they were $5.59. I didn't say anything, but I guess thats something to watch.
It was definitely understaffed today, but I'll try it again, its a nice addition to the neighborhood.
Hey Ben, Thanks for at least getting my general drift about everyone trying to please everybody. You are absolutely correct. I haven't been there yet, but not for trying. I went by during the week and they had closed early I guess. I also arrived yesterday morning (Sunday) with a Party of 5 to find they're not open on Sundays even though Urban Spoon had it listed. Also arriving within the next couple of minutes were 4 other groups. Here we were @ 20 people all thinking WTF, What a great place this place could be on a Sunday if they were even open. What are the other options, frozen bagels at Einstein or the usual substandard, rude breakfast experience at The Fox (if you can get in.)
We looked down the block to the Derby on Park renovation and got in the car and drove out Beach Blvd. to Secret Garden for a perfectly prepared Eggs Benedict and exceptional service from Darrell. Can't wait for them to open.
It took some convincing to get my wife and son to go Saturday for lunch, but I assured them it was going to be really good. Well I'm still not sure what happened, after waiting 45 minutes, and watching the customers that came in after us get there food. We asked what was taking our order so long (2 crepes and a panini). The waitress asked the chef about our order, and he said he didn't have it, so we said never mind, and offered to pay for our drinks (which they ending up comping) and walked over to O' Brother's which was really good. I will give Domo a couple of weeks to iron out the kinks and try again.
Thats crazy that they are going to be closed on Sunday.

CG7 I was there and witnessed your experience first hand. I came in with my wife after you guys were already seated. There were 2 guys that were served right after we got there, one of which got the wrong order and then the waitress took their plates before they were finished eating - before the guy could spit out that his friend in the bathroom wasn't finished she had already thrown some dirty napkins on top of the food.
After seeing your debacle I wasn't surprised when our order took 45 minutes to reach the table and then another 5 minutes to get silverware.
I had a cup of chili (nice flavor but served cold) and a banana & nutella dessert crape (very good).
I found a lot of intriguing menu choices for breakfast & lunch... Just hope they can straightened out the service before our next visit :)
Went the other day. It was OK, but they def need to iron out some kinks.
Was there during breakfast, but wanted to know if they served the dessert crepes at that time. I think the lady at the counter thought I was asking about lunch items? I dunno, its kinda like she wasn't too concerned or something wasn't clicking, so I just ordered a breakfast item to avoid her head exploding.
Got a bottled OJ with the food. It was warm, like room temperature warm (even though it came from their cooler in front). I didn't bother drinking it because I didn't know if it was safe at that temp. Probably was OK, but still didn't wanna chance it. Their WiFi didn't work either & kept turning on & off.
The food was good though, but I'll prob wait a little bit to go back so they can iron out some of this stuff. Don't wanna fault them too much since they just opened.
I really hope the owners/management are reading all of this...

Thnks,
Domo is getting better. Their owner says that they've been in the "soft opening" phase with the Grand Opening this Saturday, October 1. It also sounds like they should open earlier on the weekends for breakfast.
What about being open on Sunday?
They are open on Sunday from 9AM.
I was hoping for a Paris street type, filled crepe, not a knife and fork topped crepe. Disappointed.

Agree, but I genuinely don't think they could pull the volume or make enough money with that. Think about it...to make people want to buy a 4.99-8.99/crepe, it better look/feel like/be akin to a
meal. Paris street crepes work because they're sold from vendors/carts with practically no overhead. Don't think that would work here. Maybe in NYC, but not here.
I went there a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday morning for breakfast. It took about 20 minutes to get a cup of coffee and 45 to get our crepes. By then we were out of coffee and did not get a refill until we finished eating our crepes. But to me the worst part was that after all of that, I did not get what I ordered. I ordered the kiwi berry crepe which according to the menu is "Made with a fresh kiwi and medley of seasonal berries
including blueberries, strawberries, raspberries delicious blackberries and filled with nutella." The crepe I received had kiwi and a few strawberries and no nutella. I was so disappointed but ate it anyway as I was starving from the wait. I thought maybe they were out of the other berries, but my husband had all of those berries on his crepe, and I really couldn't understand why there was no nutella. So disappointing. That is one of my biggest pet peeves, ordering something based on the description from the menu and then not getting what the menu described.
I really think the waitress messed it up as she seemed to be doing a lot of that with other customers. Hopefully they are working their kinks out. They should really consider a self service coffee bar like cool moose. Also, I was surprised that they don't offer blintzes, or any other cheese filled crepes, only nutella (if you're lucky).
I've been there three times recently, once in the evening (after dinner time) for desert crepes, when about half the seats were filled. Service was not Mickey D quick, but our group did not feel neglected, and we got what we ordered, and all were pleased.. Twice in the afternoon - once just for a mocha, service was efficient; and another time for a savory crepe - again, service was OK, as was the crepe. I've not been there at a "rush" time, but service has always been friendly, and about mid-range to places I've been. No worse than a diner I frequent.
Wait a minute, is this a full service restaurant - with free WiFi? I haven't been there but should I be thinking of this place as a coffee house where I can hang out for 6+Hrs or a full service restaurant where the waiters start giving me odd looks when I occupy a table beyond the time I spent eating?

Oh your waiter wont give you odd looks, she probably wont even notice you. I suggest bringing your own coffee though. Maybe a bag lunch.
Things are going nicely at Domo as far as I can see, new menu items, and the wi-fi is always working fine. Music is nice too.
I have eaten lunch there twice in the last week. Both times were very tasty, friendly and reasonably quick.
I took my wife & daughter Sunday & we loved it. They were out of a few key ingredients, however - which forced alternate selections. We will return for sure.
After 2 visits, I can say that overall I like this place. I think they're working their kinks out well. And not once have I been called a leech for sitting down or using the WiFi. 3 Layers clearly needs to go in there and show them how it's done, these damn leeching customers need to be shown who's in charge! ::)
I've only been once and the day I was there the only ingredient they seemed to be out of was salt.
A little NaCl goes a long way to making food enjoyable.
And I'm talking ZERO flavor. It wasn't like it was just a tad light. There was none.
Also I ordered the crepes as they were, no mods, and they weren't prepared per the menu.
Why didn't I make them redo it? I got it to go and wasn't driving back.
They'll get another visit, but it won't be anytime soon.
We went there Sunday around noon and got quick & friendly service with the crepes made right at the counter. The firecracker chicken crepe was very tasty and a little spicy from the serrano chiles. We split that and then followed it up with a kiwi & berry crepe which was also delicious. I'm not a big chocolate fan, but the Nutella wasn't overwhelming. All the ingredients were fresh and we both thought each dish was quite very good.
Only complaint was the Jaguars were playing and even with 3 large TVs over the counter, there was no game. We had to walk around the corner to Obrothers to watch. Turns out that was a wasted effort though!
Any one see the report on channel 4 about all the health code violations that Domo racked up on one visit?

But yeah, it has it's faults.
When I asked for a crepe with 'butter and sugar', you know, typical French style, they looked at me like I had six eyes and proclaimed "But we don't have that on the menu!"
A friend told me they closed already. Can anyone confirm? They did such a nice job with the interior, hopefully something else can go in there right away.

They did a great job with the interior, but couldn't run a restaurant for the life of them. Service was terrrrrible, and the products weren't anything you'd wanna go back for more than once every 2 or 3 months.
I'll walk by today and see what's going on.
Man, I had not even heard of this place.
yeah I only went once soon after it opened and after the horrible service, I pretty much forgot about it.
The food wasn't anything to write home about either...I mean, it's a crepe place, and they don't even have a crepe with butter and sugar.
Decent place, would go back for dessert.
Went once... definite service issues...
Great concept poor execution. I went maybe four times and they wanted to be good and just didn't know how. Love the interior probably needed to hire an experienced restaurant manager. Too bad the place had real potential.

After just six months in operation, Domo Crepes Etc. has closed in Riverside's Five Points area.
The restaurant, which opened in September in a former Subway location, failed to attract enough customers to its unique crepe concept to stay open, according to a sign posted on the restaurant’s door at 813 Lomax St.
The sign read, in part:
“Although we expected the location to support our plans for growth, sales did not rise fast enough. The owners of Domo are most appreciative of our loyal regular customers, and from the comment cards, we are encouraged to know our unique menu was enjoyed by so many.â€
A Times-Union food critic said as much in a December restaurant review:
“I can tell you that they are delicious, with crispy edges and just enough weight and thickness to harness the fillings. I opted for the Chicken Florentine Crepe ($8.49) and was very pleased with the whole wheat crepe that came folded around grilled chicken, fresh spinach, mushrooms, ricotta and mozzarella cheese. The chef understood that less is more when it comes to crepes and didn’t overload the dish, but kept it simple with a drizzle of demi-glace across the top and fresh greens on the side.â€
Located on a side street off the main Five Points strip, Domo was hard to find for those just driving through the historic neighborhood.
And in its message to its loyal customers, Domo left the door open to opening its doors again â€" in a new spot.
“Next, we will be working to find a new location which will provide better visibility and more seats so we can balance sales and expenses. Stay tuned, check the news and we look forward to serving you again.â€

QuoteI predict a kiosk at SJTC - Like French Fry Heaven....
Now that was funny, nope, I predict yet another tattoo parlor or hemp store or worse, another yogurt shop.
Its funny they're blaming everything on their location. I mean, if you're good, people will find you. It wasn't exactly in a dark alley behind a dumpster & there are plenty of businesses on that street (and similar side streets) that do just fine. Their problem was the service, and to some extent, the prices. I gave this place 3 tries & each time they found a special way to turn me off.
The last one was I was starving & it was later in the evening. And if you haven't noticed, Five Points isn't exactly the best place to get a decent choice of different types of food later in the evening if you don't want a "sit down" restaurant & spend $20. Anyways, this was a good 45 minutes before Domo closed & the guy at the counter said they were only doing desert crepes (no sandwiches or hot items) since it was "so close to closing". Wow, really? OK, bye then. Never went back.
I wonder what will open, do a really half assed job & then close 6 months later next in Five Points??
There does seem to be quite a pattern of it in that area doesn't there. I can think of 3 or 4 off the top of my head.
QuoteI wonder what will open, do a really half assed job & then close 6 months later next in Five Points??
Looks like that tapas place across the street from Domo Crepes might be next. Heard that it did a soft opening for a couple of nights, but is now closed up again.

Food wasn't good, wasn't bad. Besides service, I kept wondering: "have these people ever been to Paris? Do they know what a crepe is?"
Crepes aren't as this as they were making them. They're not as doughy, or expensive either. A good crepe takes under a 1.5 minutes to cook. At Domo, no matter what kind of crepe you ordered, you were moving into the 20+ minute marker.
And yeah, I didn't think the location was bad at all. If they try to reopen, thinking the location was what did them in, well, that's sad.

But they had enough $$ to rehab the whole unit?
On the face of it, sure, it's a ridiculous statement. But consider what we're discussing here...we're talking about a restaurant, where the concept is based of one of the France's most famous dishes. It's called due diligence, and it's a must in the restaurant industry (in most industries, actually). Don't open up a "crepe place" and serve things that resemble IHOP's poor attempt at a crepe. Serve the real thing.
That'd be like opening up a "soul restaurant" (anywhere in the world), and never having been to the South, or experienced soul food. Or, like opening up a Thai, Vietnamese, or Indian place, and never having tried the real thing. Call me a snob, but I stand by that sentiment.
Not to mention if they'd seen what it takes to make a real crepe, they'd know it takes 1.5 minutes and costs 1/20th whatever they're paying for.
And yes, I've been to Paris. But, that's not the point. The point is Domo was a poor excuse for a dish that has to be done authentically, or not done at all.

Exactly....let's start with knowing what your product is supposed to taste/look like, how long it should take to cook, etc.
I don't think its odd at all that someone opening a crepe restaurant should be expected to know how t make them.
As for the restaurant, we go out to eat all the time, live in the area, and never knew of the place. Maybe they should have done a better job of getting word out.

Cool. Any idea what it is?
Pat Corrado says that they will be baking items for a number of other restaurants, have salads and sandwiches at lunch and a light, "tapas style" menu in the evening. Beer and wine. He hopes to be open by the end of July.

Great news for the hood. Thanks for the info.
I have to comment here. I support local food and do my best to try new places, give them time to work their kinks out and try again.
I went to Domo once. Was pleasantly surprised when I walked in the door. Thought the interior was fresh, cozy, comfortable and relaxing - I had high hopes for my experience. Then, we ordered two espresso drinks and two crepes.
My latte was lukewarm and overly sugary and took about 20 minutes when there was a total of 3 tables.
The crepe... ugh. A crepe should be tasty even if you have just the dough with NO toppings. I agree, this place didn't do their homework and wasn't authentic. That is WHY people went there - expecting a delicious crepe for $8. Not something mediocre. Mine had "jarred" raspberry sauce, canned peaches and "fake" whip-cream and some kind of processed vanilla creme garbage. I don't say this lightly when I say it was total crap. I am completely confident that IHOP would have been better.
I was really disappointed. So much that I never went back.
Whoever invested their money into this place should have tried harder with fresher ingredients and a better staff working with a sense of urgency. 45 minutes for crepes and lattes? And this wasn't when they first opened.
I distinctly remember thinking, why didn't I just go try Bold Bean this morning.
^Couldn't have said it better myself.
This is the benefit of existing buildings even when previous concepts fail. You end up with ready to move in spaces for other concepts.
Is the new bakery not happening?
^What makes you say that? Admittedly, haven't been by in awhile, but I did see they officially put their sign up
