Want to help your community? Tired of waiting for someone else to fix what's broken? Then this is your type of event.
No money to donate, no skills required and no degree in urban planning is a pre-requisite. This event is urban revitilization in it's purest form.
We'll be starting at 9AM Saturday August 20th. All you need to do is show up with a positive attitude. Skills required: ability to pick up trash. That's it! You just show up, I'll provide gloves and trash bags. Keep Jacksonville Beautiful will haul off the waste.
Waders or kayaks helpful, but not required.
Who's in to make it happen?
I will be there. Is this going to be the area around Beaver Street, or do you have somewhere else planned.?
Quote from: fieldafm on August 08, 2011, 10:40:35 AM

this is an outrage!
That sounds great. I'll give a tentative "yes" because I cannot shake the feeling that there's something else I'm committed to that day. I'll put this on my Google calendar! :)
Yes, Noone's Launch Park behind the Beaver Street Fire Station and old FDLE buidling. HOPEFULLY enough people will show up where we can break into two groups and attack multiple areas the creek basin.
Thank you VERY much in advance to anyone that is willing to donate their time. Myself and the community at large appreciates your efforts
Great response so far! Again thank you all for your interest. Tell your friends and let's get out there and make it happen.
Field, I'm in. Thanks for posting.
Remember all the garbage that was there when we went kayaking a few weeks back? Its all gone. Everyone is Making It Happen. Low tide at 9. Great opportunity to visually clean that stretch of Hogans. I'm getting some new waders. A 3 prong rake is a good tool for these conditions. Spoke with councilman Gaffney and he said that he is definately going to do something as it relates to access and economic opportunity. I've contacted his office and I'll do it again.
City council meeting tonight and Waterways Wend Aug.10 at 9:30. Somebody else make a call to Gaffney and ask him when he will Make It Happen. I was left with the impression that it would be soon. How about someone else asking and posting his current position.
I'll bring a couple of kayaks. Has anyone else submitted their guess to the yet unidentified abandoned welding project behind the Jacksonville Historical Society? Or is it a railroad yard light pole? Advertising pole for the casket company? Or a street car trolley pole? I'm going with the streetcar trolley pole.
QuoteRemember all the garbage that was there when we went kayaking a few weeks back? Its all gone.
Really? Who did that, Maxwell House employees?
QuoteSpoke with councilman Gaffney and he said that he is definately going to do something as it relates to access and economic opportunity. I've contacted his office and I'll do it again.
What did he say he was going to do? Give me a call.
Somebody else give our elected legislative representatives a call and report back on this forum. Especially Redman and Gaffney. Anybody going to Waterways tomorrow?
Got with Vivian Harrell last week and also spoke with Jerry Spinks and have identified future pick up cleaning locations around the Jacksonville Historical Society and the Maxwell House Plant area.
There will be another city wide cleanup Sept.17 and Hogans Creek will be a destination for serious participants. More details will be announced. Vivian mentioned that a group from the military will be there and have asked to participate in a serious and not a fluff location. I love how Vivian rates and catagorizes location sites and this will not be posted for kids.
Hi, can someone post an address? I used various items in the posts as key words to try to find the location but was not successful. Thanks so much.
Here is a link for directions there from the Main St Bridge. Just change point A to your address to get full directions.

Lucasjj, thanks so much! Barring unforeseen events, I'll be there. :) Karla
Just got back from Waterways and saw Vivian Harrell and she is excited about all the clean up efforts. Looking forward to the 20th.
See you all next Saturday!!
Been getting a few PMs and emails about the location. It's right behind the fire station, behind the downtown Winn Dixie.
If you have a kayak, great b/c there are quite a few spots that are hard to access by foot that need attention. If you don't, that's good too b/c there are quite a few areas easily accessible by foot that need quite a bit of attention.
Here is a Google Map view of where to meet:
Attention: Anyone who attends this cleanup will get free admission to Final Friday Pub Crawl on August 26th. Help cleanup Hogan's Creek for an hour or two, have some fun doing it, and get two free drink tickets, free admission to some of the best bars and clubs in town, and transportation to those bars via trolley. This might just be the best deal in town.
More information on the Pub Crawl will be posted on this thread: http://www.metrojacksonville.com/forum/index.php/topic,12900.0.html
whoa...now that is crazy talk!
will there be a September cleanup?
I'll do a weekly cleanup if others will join.
If any Springfield groups are interested, please let me know. I lost Bill's (head of block captains) contact info.

There can be a cleanup whenever you want. Just make a post about wanting to do a cleanup and you're bound to get a response from some people. Noone, field, Capt will all usually respond and, most of the time, make it. We've done them with 4 people and we've done them with 30 (hell, Noone goes solo pretty often too). We've even done them with Clean It Up, Green It Up, Riverkeeper, Surfrider, and the Springfield groups.
Can't wait. I'll be there with my boots on. City is on board with after clean up pick up. Thank you Vivian.
PeeJayEss, You are the man! With that kinda offer and if the media picks up on it you guys could have 1000's showing up.
Looking forward to seeing Noone's welding project. Is it near the launch site?
I'm sticking with a street car trolley pole. A different launch site. Sat will be a low tide.
The group according to Field will be meeting at Beaver and Washington. That's a good spot. I'll be bringing the wheelbarrow, 3 prong rake, shovel, Everyone is making a difference and its becoming more noticable.
Bring your own tools if you have them.
Some really exciting developments... I would highly encourage you to show up Saturday.
I will be there rain or shine. I may just park at the Historic Society for the Jag game and sleep in my car (joking, but it's not a bad idea).
I'm in the process of recruiting volunteers as well. In our last paddle at low tide we discovered a large number of sizable submerged objects. With some good rope, a few shovels, and a 4x4 we should be able to get them out.
I will strap on the hip waders and be out there. I will also be bringing a couple shovels and a rake to contribute.
I hope to see a lot of people out there. It will be a double effort cleaning for most. While cleaning up the creek you can also sweat out all of the previous night toxins.

Amen.
I've got a cleanup in Jax Beach and one in St. Auggy on Saturday, but I'll probably be doing Hogan's because that's the one I want to do and it needs cleaning oh so much more. Plus, pull trash out of Hogan's, and that much less ends up on the beach. Also, will need to actually follow-through on the free pub-crawl promise with a sign-up list or something. Let say seeya there!
I keep getting emails from people wanting directions. Apparently there is confusion.
We are in a clearing, about a block behind the downtown Winn Dixie. You'll see people and cars parked there. We're right behind the fire station, corner of Beaver and Washington Streets.
In less than 24 hours. A grass roots JEDC group of organizers will be cleaning one of the dirtiest urban Waterways in our city and for your active participation you will be rewarded with a Pub Crawl entry. I'm in.
I'll also throw in a drawing for a prize that will be at the cleanup and you have to be present to win.
Regardless, whoever shows up you gets pats on the back because you are truly Making it Happen.

The Sat. Hogans Creek cleanup was a huge success. Special shout out thanks to our new JEDC organizers. It was a pleasure to meet some new and caring people, Kathy, Joe, Barry, Nan, Duncan, and a bunch more of die hards who will always want to get an up close and personal experience of this beautiful Downtown Urban Waterway Destination.
We pulled out two shopping carts and one was a Winn Dixie shopping cart good enough to return to Winn Dixie. Mayor Brown I was thinking about you the whole time and look forward to one day showing you and your new growing Administration the benefits that can be immediately provided by making this Urban waterway a Destination NOW. Its GO TIME.
Congratulations to Lucasjj. He was the winner of the special drawing. It was great to see him again. He always comes prepared and with so many tools that really help in cleaning. His positive attitude is catching. Also he was involved with the assist on the shopping carts in addition to the bags of garbage that was removed by a grass roots effort of people who just want to make our community better.
Thank you again Vivian Harrell for the blue bags and we did utilize both cleanup pickup locations. Everyone Made It Happen.
When's the next one?
We had a good cleanup Saturday. It wasn't a large group, but Field did well in getting people out there and we got a good bit cleaned up. It really is a nice area of the creek when we are done. We also had some new faces this time. So don't be shy about coming out in the future when we have these.

Nice pics. Thanks for posting.
fantastic job!
A big thank you to those that came out. We rounded up about 31 trash bags and one shopping cart full of garbage in just under two hours. It is amazing what a small number of people can do in so little time. It's very easy to make a difference in your community.
Special thanks to the 12 volunteers who showed up, which included members of Keep Jacksonville Beautiful, Transform Jax and the Girls Gone Green.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The next cleanup will be part of the 26th annual nationwide International Coastal Cleanup on September 17. We will be holding the event at the Jacksonville Historical Society. Keep Jacksonville Beautiful is providing us with trash bags and a dumpster. The Historical Society is graciously granting us access with plenty of parking. Volunteers will also be receiving free tshirts and a meal afterwards at RAM.
Those of you who were with us for the St Johns River Celebration cleanup last March at this very site will remember that we filled up nearly an entire dumpster full of trash. 10 volunteers managed to gather more debris along Hogans Creek than the 50+ volunteers along the Northbank Riverwalk that same day.
To give you an idea of the signifigance of this event... I am missing tailgating at the Florida State-Oklahoma game to attend this cleanup. Unless you are on your deathbed, or perhaps participating in the birth of your first child... you don't have an excuse to miss this event and take an hour or two of your time to make it happen.

The supplies have been picked up. Sept.17 at Hogans Creek. 9-11 then we take it to RAM for a t-shirt pick up.
Field captures the activity completely.
Thanks in advance to everyone that is Making it Happen.
Just 3 days out.
1 day out.
Field, your the author of the thread could you just add Sept.17 to the title. Please.
For all who participate in addition to the t-shirt at RAM we will also have a drawing again for all participants before we take it to Ram.
Low tide is around 7 so there is a really great opportunity to get that shopping cart that the Capt. Field, and PeejayEss spotted just about 20' from the sandy beach kayak launch location. Lucasjj so glad to hear that your going to be able to make it.
Yes I'll bring some kayaks.
As for the drawing everyone can write their name on some Jacksonville city council speaker cards and will have the drawing out of a shopping cart.
Additional prizes include
1. Gift certificate to Roberts Eatery
2. Gift certificate to Carmines
3 Springfield t-shirt
Most importantly- everyone have fun. Your making a difference. And remember what Vivian Harrell says about Hogans Creek. "Its not a fluff site".
NM can you bring your PFD and a paddle? I'll be bringing 5 yaks. If anyone has their own bring them. Doug, will you and Jacob be able to make it?
Shout out to anyone from Springfield and the Historical societies. We will all continue to Make It Happen.
Just an hour out. Looking forward to seeing everyone again. If someone has a camera bring it. Everyone is making a difference.
Lets all be proud to say
VISIT JACKSONVILLE!
What another fantastic clean up of one of the dirtiest Waterways in the heart of our vibrant Downtown that is also a Destination for those who don't want to give up in trying to Make it Happen for everyone.
First on the scene this morning behind the what will soon be identified as the 2Nd most important Waterway access point behind the Promised 680 Downtown Public Pier was Keith Myers former mayoral candidate and it is always my distinct pleasure to share as a site captain with him every year when these clean ups take place.
I had brought 5 kayaks and wanted to unload them and have them set up when others arrived so I take the van too close to just get stuck in the sand. With tires spinning it was great when North Miami, Field, Lucasjj arrive. Forget the cleanup. Lets give the triple AAA tow and break a sweat and push Nooney's van out of this quagmire before we even get started.
Leadership 101-This is how you don't do it.
But the triple AAA effort with Field, NM, Lucasjj and Keith was like the everready battery that Keith showed us right in the beginning. These guys never lost the charge. Low tide was at 7 and so the tide is coming in and I so much wanted to get that shopping cart that the Capt, Field, PeeJayEss had seen and is just so close to the launch site. Field and I got in the kayaks and couldn't find it. There is another one that is close to shore so I take the kayak and get the location. Field is already in the water so he grabs some blue bags and he's off.
Lucasjj and I head over and tackle the other one. Had a rope with a hook and we hooked the cart. tied it up to the bumper of the van down by the river and gave it a pull. Line snapped or so we thought. Instead it just straightened out the hook. We weren't lettin this big one get away. Now obviously dislodged from its sedimentary bond we were able to now get it over and up the bank. NM had now joined us and his comment that it was like dragging a hog out of the woods was pretty accurate. Another shopping cart out of the creek. And also very important for our end of cleanup drawing.
With the tide coming in everyone seemed to navigate to the kayaks and just start paddling with bags and collecting garbage. I know I went in and out a couple of times.
Keith every time I saw him just had bag after bag filled but he's standing on the bank and its already time to wrap it up. Huge effort put in by all. They each had sections and I'll let them share their perspectives. Let me just say for NM this was his first Hogans Creek cleanup and his enthusiasm spread like wildflower. The beautiful sandy launch area was and is continually being improved. He then took a kayak to the water and brought the enthusiasm with him.
We are wrapping up and are now getting ready for the drawing. I didn't realize that Field had left. But no problem. We are using official Jacksonville city council speaker cards. I fill out a card for Field. Questions only. Which is read into the record but other comments aren't. Being none he is still part of the permanent record and is in the drawing. There are 4 people for 3 prizes. The speaker cards are in the shopping cart. I cover my eyes and using the cleanup issued picker upper I reach in and clasp a card.
The first prize was an SOS Springfield t-shirt that was won by NM. NM was very gracious and it will be auctioned off again at a future event.
The second prize was a $10 gift certificate to Robert's Eatery and that was won by Field. We had you covered. Questions Only. Your part of the permanent record. Robert moves around a lot. You may never be able to find him. Its a good thing that the council withdrew 2010-856 the transient vendor ban. He now has a killer pork chop sandwich. Has expanded with the chicken wings. If he knows your coming he'll make sure he's got you covered. It can be a unique variation on fast food that everyone else if they are not doing it will be soon. Just let me know how you want to handle this culinary food option. Its all yours and if I can do anything to make this experience run smoothly that there won't be any miscomunication in where he is and what it is that you are ordering just let me know. I'm there for you.
The third prize was a $20 gift certificate to Carmine's won by Lucasjj. This young man is a true inspiration. He embodies Rising Tides. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and enjoy. NM and I were at Carmines the other day and I know I'll be back again.
Keith, Our prize was being together again and seeing each other and really working as a team year after year. Vivian, Your part of the team too.
I don't think we could have scripted a better drawing out of a shopping cart on Hogans Creek.
I had to leave early to head over to Tallahassee for the game... but it was a great morning with cool temperatures. I did stop over by the Nortbank Riverwalk YMCA to check out their haul... we didn't beat them this time, but came very close. The fact that 5 dedicated guys can collect the same amount of trash along a much smaller site at Hogans Creek that 5 times as many volunteers can collect along the Northbank Riverwalk, really goes to show you the kind of issues the Hogans Beltway faces

If so, I fail to see the logic. Can a dedicated, hard-working, grassroots group not improve the situation of the creek?

I get his writing style. Have you been to Sidney Gefen Park on the Northbank? Can't wait for the Sunday cleanup. Are you going to be able to make it? I'll always remember attending the grand opening of the Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University and had the opportunity during a tour sharing it with At Large Group 2 Jacksonville City Council member John Crescimbeni and we both were shown these examples of trash run-off collectors. Has one been installed and tried anywhere? Just asking and curious. The parking lots of the Maxwell House Plant is an excellent example for using one so is Sidney Gefen Park.
PeeJayEss, not picking on you but after the cleanup I'm thinking of taking it to the official kayak launch at Metro Park Marina then taking it to Berkman Plaza-Plaza at Berkman and then fish under the brand new No Fishing signs that was not before Waterways. Do you have your fishing license? Remember how sporty of a paddle it was when the three amigos paddled from Hogans Creek to the pier? This paddle may be a lot harder and more challenging. Anyway I'm thinking about doing it.
Springfield, where are you?
Sunday morning 6/24/12 at 9 and the cleanup is Washington to Catherine St.
Bottom line right now is 1 day out from a Vivian Harrell shout out and I'm All In.
Todays cleanup at Catherine street was awesome. Special shout out to the Arlington Jaycees. What a fun bunch that just worked there butts off and had a smile on there faces the whole time. Will post more on another thread.
