I like that Gainesville was mentioned. Being able to walk or bike everywhere down there was absolutely wonderful. It kept me about 15 pounds lighter, more physically fit, happier, and allowed me to spend less money. If I could recreate that here, I would.

It seems that large corporations and builders are making sure that you can't recreat that here...building permits and development plans have no desire to make you happy and healthy..they have a mansion to buy...
I went to Gainsville today and noticed the sign at the county line "Welcome to bike friendly Putnam county".

You might want to put a GPS on that bike! Gainesville is in Alachua County. :)
I went through Putnam as Gainesville wasn't my only stop. I should have written a county line instead of the county line.
You could move to Riverside. Or the Beaches.

^I have the same problem, I live in San Marco and work at UNF. I love UNF but I'm not moving to the Southside. The wife and I would rather live where we want to live, and that condemns us to driving to work.
Walking and bicycle usage are very high in NE Jacksonville Beach, where the blocks are very small and the streets are all connected. Transit usage is modest, but relatively high.
As you get closer to Butler Blvd, there are more single-entry subdivisions and there's more traffic congestion.
We selected Riverside as our place to build a retirement home precisely looking forward to the time we can't drive anymore. We're down to one car that sits in the garage almost full time.
