Title: How can we beat the heat?
Post by: danem on July 23, 2011, 04:38:02 PM
I was walking around town today, and realized just how many areas are uncovered and blazing hot this time of year. For all the talk about walkability and getting folks to leave their cars now and then, it seems like one thing we have to deal with in this part of the country is the fact that it's like the surface of the sun out there and with 90% humidity thrown in to make it unbearable.

What is the answer? More shade? More trees? Better trees? Giant fans? Would misters help, or is that more appropriate for dry desert regions? I'm sure some of you out there have observed some even more creative answers to the urban heat problem.

Scantily clad women. Gets 'em out of the car every time.

Sexist? Perhaps. Misogynistic? Absolutely not.

Make like a vampire and only come out at night. And turn into a bat.

Yeah something Jax suburbs is not good at.  I think in town has a lot more shade trees, but as time goes on they all seem to get replaced by palms

Move slow, talk slow, don't get upset and walk your dogs in the morning early.

My wife and I find that sneaking into apartment complex swimming pools is a great way to stay cool. You can pool hop all the way from San Marco to the beach. Also, driving very slowly (with the a/c on full blast) to simulate walking thru Jacksonville's more walkable areas.

One of the reasons the streets in the old days were heavily planted with trees that met in the middle was to protect the people, but especially the horses that were pulling the wagons and buggies.

They also didn't have JEA cutting the tops out of them or the City planting bushes instead of trees.
