On Monday afternoon, after touring Cecil Field's industrial businesses, Mayor-Elect Alvin Brown will host a small rally in Memorial Park at 4:PM. He will then walk up Margaret Street visiting the businesses there and through 5 Points, visiting businesses there.
The walk will end at the 5 Points Theater where, after an introduction by author Stetson Kennedy, a slide show of Riverside/Avondale History will be given by Dr. Wayne Wood followed by a short video of the Brown's pre-election rally in Memorial Park.
Mayor-Elect Brown is visiting all parts of Jacksonville as part of his inauguration activities. His visit to Riverside is among the first.
This sounds like a great event! Dog Walker, do you have information about any other neighborhood visits Mayor-elect Brown has scheduled this week?
Sorry, this is the only one I know details for. Details might be posted on Brown's Facebook page, but I don't Face or Tweet.
His advance team is notifying businesses along his routes so you might want to ask in your neighborhood.
These visits and his "wide-net" transition teams are an encouraging start to his administration.

No mention of Monday's events.
No mention of Tuesday's or Wednesday's either, but I have heard that there will be events similar to Monday's. Go figure. Maybe they are afraid of crowds or something.
I am very excited about the new administration coming, but we must be prepared for huge oppostion from the commmunity, especially when it comes to revilizting downtown. But hey, Anything worth having is worth fighting for. It may seem like an uphill battle at first, but we will come out on top. :)
Hopefully I can make it to one of the events this week.

Inauguration Week Walk
Celebrating History-Making History
Some mayors have an Inaugural Ball or an Inauguration Day. Our new Mayor, Alvin Brown, has a whole week of Inaugural events and you are invited. Come join the mayor-elect at Memorial Park at 4pm for a presentation by The Cummer Museum and Riverside Avondale Preservation.
Afterwards, walk with Mayor Elect Brown to the 5 Points Theater for a presentation by Dr. Wayne Wood at 5:30pm. We have also heard that there may be a special appearance by award-winning author and human rights activist Stetson Kennedy. What an exciting treat!
At the Theater, light finger food will be provided by Biscottis, Chew, and Mojo no. 4 while it lasts. There will also be a cash bar.
The best way to make sure you get to meet Mayor Elect Brown will be to gather at Memorial Park and take the walk with us or arrive early to the 5 Points Theatre. The theatre's capacity is limited.
For a little inspiration, take a look at the May 1, Day 1 Rally that was held for Alvin Brown in Memorial Park.

Great fun event this evening. Brown visited businesses along Margaret St. then 5 Points with a crowd of groupies leading and following. The newly elected City Councilmen from the area, Jim Love and Robin Lumb were there along with the usual group of Riverside folk. Tony Hill, State Representative, came in during the show. Almost all of the Riverside/Avondale heavyweights were there too. Wayne Wood and Tony Allegrtti did the introductions.
The badges being handed out read, "Riverside/Alvindale".
In his talk at the 5 Points Theater, Brown spoke about the need to encourage small businesses like the ones in 5 Points and that he represented all neighborhoods in the city, not just certain groups. Speaking directly to the two newly elected, Republican City Councilmen he said, "We may disagree, but we can work together."
There was heavy applause when he said, "Preservation lands will not be sold and historic neighborhoods will be protected." Just what this audience wanted to hear.
Altogether a positive, warm neighborhood event. Really good politics too.
It was a great event for sure, DW. I came a little late (directly from a late-landing airplane) and saw you in the theater. I would have said hello, but I ducked out to get to another commitment.
There's a lot of positive energy around this inauguration.
Sorry I didn't mention you were there too, Jimmy. I always include you among the "heavyweights". Mike Langston was there, too and I forgot him....who else?
Stetson Kennedy was heart warming, and also a reminder of just how far (and not) we have come in one man's lifetime.
Alvin came out for lunch at the HUD Community Transformations workshop at the Potter's House yesterday, and I had the pleasure of hearing his rousing speech. He followed an amazing performance by Ju'coby Pittman of Clara White Mission, who stood up in front of the packed house and sang a hymn when she was asked to give an impromptu message. I had no idea she had such a beautiful voice.
The crowd, which was 90% African-American, was obviously thrilled by Alvin's historic election and his words. He talked about jobs, and education, and bringing our community together. He talked about personal responsibility and how we were all going to have to learn to work together to do more with smaller financial resources. He made me believe that we can make it happen.
I can't wait to see what the next four (or eight) years bring!

I sensed that you seemed preoccupied with something when I saw you. I am glad that it was just another commitment that you had to get to. I was a little worried.
I am most pleased by how the weather held out for us in Riverside...
I was very encouraged by the mayor-elect's visit to the Beach Diner, where he met and spoke with local officials (the mayors of Atlantic and Neptune Beaches, the Atlantic Beach city manager and others). One of the officials told me that the mayor-elect was brave for venturing into what is a Republican stronghold and for reaching out to those who might have voted the other way. Personally, I question whether the other candidate in the mayor's race would have made a similar gesture toward those who were not part of his 'base.' Now is the time to live up to the 'one city' mantra and the incoming mayor is following through on his word.
I heard a rumor... that the Clintons will be in attendance
