Im thinking we need a "Name the Entertainment district" contest...

Ok Let's put suggestions up then we will post a poll and the winning suggestion will win our admiration.

tg's "Actionville" is my favorite so far.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the famous Electric Seven line runs through the so-called entertainment district.

We could called it the "Electrifying 7 District"

Actionville is so cliche.

I still like the Court District, but ...

No matter what, East Bay is what people are most likely to call it.

My concern is that the area is larger than East Bay Street.

From that list, I like East Bay or Actionville. East Bay because it's more of a name of the place. Actionville because I love semi-puns.

The thing I feel about giving places names like Actionville, or Awesome Sauce Place, or Superhappyfuntown is that you want to make sure that the area already lives up to this name before it gets that name. Otherwise it's just sad. I personally haven't spent time in Actionville yet, so I couldn't speak to whether it does measure up yet.  ;) I just wanted to give my thinking on such names.

Actionville is painfully corny, and will be irredeemably pathetic if the area isn't seething with people and goings-on. I think we should stick with a simple geographic or historical designation for now, because the people who live/shop/party/hang out there will inevitably come up with their own colorful nickname for the district anyway, if it deserves one.

The District, sounds a bit more like it has a history, The Zone, sounds like I just woke up...

There are a lot of places in Jacksonville more entertaining than East Bay.  At least to me.  So to refer to it as "The Entertainment District" is a little off-putting.

And +1 to DGDD!  Actionville is corny and a little overused.

I'd still say my suggestion of "Actionville" if you want something punny and albeit a bit corny. But it could be applicable to have a fun name if its a fun area. If we're wanting something a little more straightforward...how about "Baytown?" Since the entertainment district originated in the Bay Street area, we could use that as a meaningful reference.

History? Well the city started at the tiny market under the giant bay tree, all surveys started at that point. Today we call it 'BAY AND MARKET'.

Bayside is close.

'Bay Tree District' hasn't been mentioned. Neither has 'Market District', or 'Founders... Wharf? Landing? District? Place?' All have some history in that area.

I'll vote for something historic or "Jacksonville-esque".

I like that Jax uses "bank" terminology...so, I don't mind something straightforward like the "Northbank Entertainment District."

Get the pier going and then the "Bay Street Pier District" ?

Historically, you've got some wharves, shipbuilding, ship repairs, etc...so how about, for example, the "Liberty Ships District"? (An older MetJax thread states the Liberty Ships were built near Metro Park though).

Also, Market is the street that the great fire chased the residents of jacksonville right up to the waters edge and then into the river.  The Spike is located on the riverwalk that marks (kindof) the jump point into the river.  It could be called simply "the Spike"

Historical and edgy...I like it.

The trouble with "naming" an entertainment district after the fact is that whatever you push on people is going to seem kinda corny. I kinda feel that a district should remain true to the earliest original function of that district possible (think of the Meatpacking District in NY, Court street district in AL). Something about the allure and history of a district draws people in. And if you can sell that history, people will flock there. Think of Riverside/Avondale in this respect.

So, with that in mind, I think Court District or Legal District or Noone's Exchange District.

After the fire and rebuilding, what was the primary use of that area?

See how New York City have their own names of their districts...

Trinity
Bowling Green
Chinatown
Chelsea
SoHo
East Harlem
Knickerbocker Village
Fort George
Financial District
Hamilton Heights
Washington Heights
Midtown Center
Manhattanville
Upper West Side
Theater District Times Square
Lower East Side
Greenwich Village
Wall Street
Kips Bay
East Village
West Village

Do you see a trend going on here for NYC?

See how Jacksonville have their own name of their districts...

Bay Street
Springfield
Confederate Park
Hogan's Creek
The Piers
The Southbank
Metropark
The Jacksonville Landing
(Help me add more and I will update this list)

Do you see any trend that can help with the naming of the so-called "Entertainment District"?
Lot of the names are based on Southern terminology, type of environment (NYC has more of village-like areas), and the culture epicenter (German, Irish, Japanese, Chinese, etc. etc.)

Stephen touches on it with the Navy connection.

You and I have actually been there and have seen the Monument on Exchange Club Island. Which is another future Waterway destination. We will USE the RIVER.

The legislation 2010-675 and the USS Adams may or may not be at the Exchange District but the Navy and maritime connection will exist if its moored on the Southbank or Northbank.

The stock exchange
We are a hub of Commerce. The ability to showcase our port.

Here's my .02:

I always think of the area in my mind as E.Bay due to the street signs, but Ebay's lawyers may not approve of our using it, plus I think it sounds a bit too much like a parody of Ybor.  (J)Action-ville sounds like what you would call the city after too many drinks, though this could be appropriate if this is going to be a bar/entertainment district.

I like Ock's suggestion of the Bay Tree District--brings to mind an arboreal gaslight district.  I always wondered where the mythical Jacksonville Bay was located anyway, so it's good to know the name refers to a species of tree rather than a nonexistent body of water.  It's also not so far removed in nomenclature from the current Bay Street entertainment district but is much more picturesque and verdant sounding, and a bay tree image juxtaposed with the Jax skyline could be used as part of the branding (Big city urban amenities with just a touch of small town Southern charm).  The question is, does anyone know if there are any bay trees currently thriving downtown and if not, could they be planted in an urban environment and survive?  I'd hate if it was called the Bay Tree district and there weren't any bay trees around!

Easy to fix, we can get em by the pot full, and really probably should at least have one on the corner of market and Bay, great spot for a historical marker on the founding of the city... A marker that DOES NOT claim we were once called 'Cowford.' Based on the history of that time the community that had started developing around 1800 was probably called 'The Hart Settlement,' which just happened to have a livestock ford in the deep narrows of the river.

I could definitely see that on street signs: "Bay Tree District" along with a vintage streetcar on tracks going into the distance, a single bay tree (or maybe a line of bay trees), and the Jax skyline above, done in a simple graphic style in 3 or 4 colors.  Get the artist who designed the Riverside Arts Market logo to do it--she or he made the underneath of a concrete FDOT highway overpass look positively artsy.
Hell, I'd buy the t-shirt today if it was available!

Ah bay trees, I like it.

But do we know if Bay Street was named after the tree? T. Frederick Davis's book says that the big tree on Market Street may have been a bay, and that if so it may have influenced the street name, but later specifically says that "Market and Bay [Streets] cannot be definitely traced as to their meaning".

http://fulltext10.fcla.edu/DLData/NF/NF00000013/file9.pdf
(p. 54 and 56).

Anyway if we're looking for historical names, there are plenty of Indian names we can dust off.

For instance: "Basala", a Timucua word meaning "a river or stream bank", or "to cross, pass through, pass by", as in a river. As a verb it could also mean "to party"(!) (apparently in the archaic sense of "part" or "portion").

I'm sure we could concoct something for it to be an acronym of. Or a portmanteau. "Bay Something Something".

Ock, You rock.

Went to a nursery and was going to buy and then plant a Bay tree next to the yet unidentified street car pole or railroad yard pole or someones very unique welding project. but was informed that there is a fungas and a lot of these trees are dying. Also we are now a more concrete jungle Downtown and a few other variables that may impact there growth and development.

Like the idea. Who sells them and does anyone have experience planting them? Just trying to help.

Red Bay trees all across the South have been dying in thousands for the past couple of years.  There is a beetle that carries a fungus that is doing the damage.  In some places the death rate for the trees is 100%.  It is real tragic to drive through places like Fernandina and Fort Clinch park and see the dead trees with brown leaves still on them.
