CHARLOTTE -- Opening day for the LYNX Blue Line wasn't exactly a smooth ride for a number of passengers, as many of them dealt with long lines, large crowds and long delays Saturday.
Charlotte Area Transit workers estimated about 1,500 people rode the trains each hour and that some people waited in line for up to two hours to board.
"[The crowds were] very hectic," said Reid Beaver, a passenger who waited for a train at the Carson Blvd. station. "There were a lot of people on board. It seemed a little bit difficult to get on board. But that's kind of expected the first weekend."
After exiting the light rail, a number of passengers waited in lines for buses.
"We need more buses moving faster, quicker, to get people in and out," said Noreen Clark, who waited for a bus for at least 40 minutes. "This line should no be like this."
A number of people said they wanted to take advantage of the Blue Line's free opening weekend. And despite the delays, many said they're excited about having a new way to get around Charlotte.
"I think it's wonderful. It's very nice, very clean and fast," said Elaine Hunter."It was really fun," Stephanie Fiore said. "It's surprisingly quiet and it's really speedy."
Starting Monday, passengers will have to pay for a ticket. A single-ride ticket for adults costs $1.30. Seniors and children ride for $0.65.
