Title: my early years in Jax
Post by: JerryS on May 29, 2011, 08:45:40 PM
Hello,  I was raised in Jax during the fifties in the Cassat and Park area.  I went to St Mathews, Bishop Kenny and Lee.  I sold the Jacksonville Journal after school at Blanding and San Juan.  Worked as a usher at the Florida theather and delivered telegrams for Western Union.  During that time I saw athe good and bad in Jax

My Dad lived on Stimson St from about '49 until '57 when he married my Mom.  They were married at St Matthews and I was baptised there.

No more drug store, Winn Dixie or western Auto like in the past.  What ever happened to the lake shore theater?

Welcome, Jerry.  I'm from the same era, but in San Marco.  Sold the Journal after school too in front of the San Marco theater.  Don't remember if it was 5 cents or 10 cents a copy, do you?

I think the journal sold for five cents.  I always sold out if there was a murder or a rape on the front page.  It was kind of rare for that to happen in those days.

What was the name? Skeets Tavern? Yeah, they tossed my no account brother-in-law out the front window back in the day... One of the happier memories. Grew up in Ortega but my nephew lived near Lexington and Cassat, so greetings from one of the sites historians, railroad planner and all around trouble makers.

What ever happened to the lake shore theater?

It became a super-ghetto chain gym that is known to hound people into the afterlife if they cancel a membership.

Oh, gotcha! That was the only theatre I remember being in Lakeshore so I figured that was it. I guess now I see why, if it had been demolished before I was born! Lol...

If I remember correctly (which is hard, as I AM old!), when it first opened, it was a single, large theater, and was later split into two.  Like the St. Johns - but I think it became a fourplex.
