DETROIT (AP) â€" Electric car upstart Tesla Motors Inc. will sell common stock again, this time with hopes of raising $214 million to expand its limited model lineup.
Tesla currently sells just one vehicle, the $109,000 Roadster, an electric sports car popular with celebrities and performance-car enthusiasts. It will offer a $50,000 four-door luxury sedan called the Model S next year.
Tesla also makes technology, such as battery packs and chargers, for Daimler and Toyota. It is developing the power system for an electric version of the Toyota RAV-4, a popular small crossover vehicle.
I saw one of those beauties earlier this year when I visited South Beach.
its the future, once they get higher battery capacity. And they will.

or more accurately, exactly what they told uncle Sam they would do with the money when we chose to help fund them.

Innovation does cost. As much as it was, its a fraction compared to the amount China and others grant towards their innovation.
Yes civil the investment was always meant to spur development that would be used by American Private industry. The grant is given because moving that technology forward is good for our country in some way. The obvious one is if it helps us become more energy independent our national security is a big winner.
This past spring i test drived the nissan leaf electric and i was smitten. In that experience, im (personally) convinced that the future of the automobile is in electric cars. The fuel prices are a small fraction of gas powered cars. That alone will affect the price of gasoline for automobiles.
I must encourage one who has doubts about (american govt paid for) technology in electric cars to test drive an electric vechicle.

Your whole anti-investment premise is a tad faulty when one considers a loan is expected to be paid back either in cash or services, and a grant is a very targeted investment of cash with stringent guidelines which must be met or the grant is forfeited. Looks to me like Tesla has done nothing but produce the vehicles and technology they promised us to do. They are btw, making the guts of the new plug and go version of the Prius. OCKLAWAHA
Those two masterminds of PBS "Car Talk", and they are Phds of MIT, emphatically endorsed the Tesla sports car.
As do I. It is a work of art, a predatory viper, and a cleaner machine than we have access to in the global market.
Our government funds many more frivilous endeavors than this. I'll save my outrage for more pressing matters.
Kudos for this particular achievement.

I love Tesla more than Edison. Tesla is so radical compared to the linear Edison. Yes, I am talking about two electricity rivals.
Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. Mr. Henry Ford likes Edison more because of his own philosophy in using electricity and gaining profit. Mr. Tesla never thought of making money from applications and usage of electricity. His vision was much grander than Thomas Edison's.
It was basically a battle of the Engineer-Mind vs. Business-Mind.-Josh
Sucking millions from Uncle Sam? They got a low interest loan from the government.
I'd say that deal seems to be working out well for both parties.
We are going to get our ass kicked in the future by China, Germany, etc if we don't publicly subsidize innovation.

Nikola Tesla was an ethnic Serb born in Croatia. But OCKS message is clear..... American innovation is based on immigrant sweat.

Tesla, Einstein, Von Braun, Alexander Graham Bell, Zworykin, Teller, etc. Many of this countries greatest innovators were direct immigrants. Going to take some public investment to continue to be the world leader in STEM.

You are of course correct as to where Tesla was born. His university studies spanned a couple of countries, but in the end Russia was the country that actually put their money on the man. Of all the countries to receive Tesla's proposal for sending electric power through the atmosphere (without poles or wires) the greatest interest came from the Soviet Union. In 1937 Tesla presented a plan to the Amtorg Trading Corporation, an alleged Soviet arms front in New York City. Two years later, in 1939, one stage of the plan was tested in the USSR and Tesla received a check for $25,000. It's a shame that we didn't recognize his genius before he died in relative poverty in a hotel suite in New York City.OCKLAWAHA
