Title: Jack Hammer from 10p-4am Roosevelt Mcduff Area
Post by: jaxlore on May 03, 2011, 02:56:37 PM
Did anybody here this last night? It drove me nuts. I wonder if the construction on Roosevelt I-10 merger is kicking in, or it could be part of this http://www.i10northflorida.com/i10/projects/details.aspx?ProjectID=138  (http://www.i10northflorida.com/i10/projects/details.aspx?ProjectID=138)
Needless to to say I am not going to be a happy camper if I have a years worth of construction noise to deal with at night.

From what I've heard, the DOT is repairing the pavement on Roosevelt, from around FSCJ (I saw a new sidewalk at Park Street the other day) up to I-10.  The I-10 work you linked to has been going on for awhile - having driven thru it at night.

I drive this every day/night, and would be a little more tolerant IF I knew what was being accomplished by cutting out irregularly-spaced rectangular sections of the road and then refilling them.

Agreed! Does anyone know what they are doing? Is it just me or was it way smoother before they starting hacking away at it?!

This is all the information the FDOT has on their website concerning that project.

Roosevelt Boulevard (US 17) â€" Replacing concrete pavement from Woodmere Street to the end of the I-10 ramp (3.6 miles). Kiewit Infrastructure South Company began January 24, 2011 and should finish in 420 days (Spring 2012) at a cost of $3,880,695.18. Bill Kays/ KCCS is CEI project manager (352-486-6960). Peyton Bennett/FDOT project manager. (2094622)

Doesn't tell us a whole lot, does it?

It's terrible.  I live near the Edgewood overpass.  It's been every night, all night for the last week.  And police lights flashing the whole time.

And I can't see a point to it.  They're making the road worse, not better.

They are patching holes in the concrete.  I believe it requires them to cut boxes around holes and then fill them in with new concrete.  Have you driven I-95 south between Baymeadows and Philips in the center lane lately?  It feels like like the wheels on your car are going to fly because there are so many holes in the pavement.  Same deal there.  They will be fixing that part eventually as well.

I know the exact section you're talking about. Try riding that on a motorcycle! Maybe it's just me but I never noticed Roosevelt as a problem?!

And just to add insult to injury there has been a JSO unmarked radar unit out there this week at afternoon rush hour right across from the intersection of Park St. You don't notice him because of the workers cars....until its too late. Be careful

I looked up the project on the FDOT website (http://www.northfloridaroads.com/projects/details.asp?ProjectID=436   (http://www.northfloridaroads.com/projects/details.asp?ProjectID=436)) and at the end it listed a contact - a guy named Mike Goldman and his phone number is 800-207-8236.  I've seen him on TV from time to time explaining projects and I gave him a call.  To my surprise, he answered the phone the first time I called and he was very polite and patient with me.

He said that they've done testing and found weaknesses in the concrete (I should have taken notes so I could give more detail) and although the defects in the concrete might not have been apparent to those of us who drive this road on a daily basis, he said that it had to be fixed sooner rather than later.

He also added that at the end of the project they're going to scrape everything down so that it's even.  But I think that's going to be next year some time so we're in for a rough ride for the foreseeable future.

Mr Goldman said to call any time there are questions, so feel free to give him your comments.  Maybe if he hears from enough of us they'll do the grading a little sooner...

Nice work, Ajax!

And I thank you Johnny for the heads-up - suppose I'll merge right and take the Blanding ramp now.

Thanks for great heads up. It hasn't been as bad the last two nights but who knows how bad it will get.

They are doing the same thing that FDOT did on I-10 EAST from 295 to McDuff. They drill core samples to see how the pavement is holding up our use sonar on the pavement looking for pockets and go in and take square blocks out and re-pour with new material in the same night. Sort of a poor man's Laura Street, because the road is rougher than hell when they finish and causes SOME people to slow down, not me, of course I run people over and flick them the bird for driving too slow.

Heads up. They are still going strong this morning.  There are two lanes blocked and the Edgewood overpass is completely closed.  I would advise and alternate route.  It took me 20 minutes to make it from Park Street to the Interstate at around 6:30 this morning.

I heard the traffic report, did a u-turn on Timuquana and took Blanding to Cassat to I-10 instead.
Surprisingly, we all got to work and school on time despite what looked like 'the long way around'.

I drove by that mess heading south at 6:30 this morning.  I noticed that large sections of the road were MIA and was glad I wasn't heading north!  I bet that was pretty crappy about 8AM.

I hit it about 7:15 and didn't have any issues.  Everything was moving fairly smoothly.

I should clarify that I was on the roads from 8:01 - 8:25. Would've been longer if I had gone my usual Roosevelt path.

imagine your delight when the northbound lane #3 from Verona to St.Johns Ave becomes a continuous RIGHT TURN ONLY LANE and a high visibility crosswalk appears at Park St West to accompany the handrail installation south of Kent campus and ramp metering at both the SR21 merge and the frontage road south out of Murray Hill at Edgewood, Jones College toward Plymouth and Blanding.
Such modifications align with 'complete streets' despite the percieved loss of continuous green on US 17 north/south through Park St W.

If you live west of the rail, and wish to walk to FSCJ Kent Campus, how would YOU get there?
north on Hamilton all the way to Plymouth, east into the campus? probably not.
South to use the lPed X ing at St.Johns? not likely.
No bike/ped lane/sidewalk exists on the Blanding-Park connector over US17.

You might try what many unfortunately must resort to. Risk it.
Safe crossing at Park St seems to be sorely overdue.
One tiny element of good stewardship is demonstrated by the evident manifestation of anticipating needs.

How about a deceleration/stacking/turn lane from southbound US17 onto Park St West?
anybody?
bueller?
bueller?

Ricker, for some reason that I can't fathom, the incident of the old Publix shopping center on the Arlington Expressway just popped into my mind. I know the two aren't even in the same league.. but when I was a kid, that publix shopping center was HOPPING mostly due to the Sin city people going over there to shop (was closer than Winn Dixie at Arlington Rd and Atlantic.) When people started getting run over, instead of putting a foot bridge over to the shopping center, they ran a fence and bushes down the ENTIRE EXPRESSWAY from the matthews to Regency mall.

The shopping center dried up quickly thereafter. It was a damn shame. They probably spent more on the fencing and bushes than it would have taken to build a foot bridge over the expressway. But the Arlingwood types threw a fit because they didn't like the idea of the Sin City filth being in their neighborhood.

I guess I was trying to work in some clever analogy to remind city leaders to heed the mistakes of the past. But eh... you know how that goes. (Ex-sin city filth here.)

There are plenty of holes in that fence.  I almost hit a guy last year staggering out of the bushes trying to get across the expressway to the BP.  I nearly flipped my car swerving to keep from hitting him.

You know i need to look into that? Put in a complaint with the police non-emergency line, see what they say. It funny because last night i didn't here a thing.
