For those who think Jax. doesn't celebrate diversity and/or that there's nothing to do downtown, here's 3 events that say otherwise:
1. World of Nations - great attendance all weekend
2. Art Walk - Wednesdsy 5/4
3. Cinco de Mayo Block Party - join Burrito Gallery, Burro Bar, and Dos Gatos for the celebration
Is that it for Cinco??

The new MOJO's No.4 is having something as well. However I'll be at the "Block Party" downtown. Good friends with the guys from Burro and Dos, so it's a win win.
Don't forget BURRO BAR's opening night is Wednesday at Art Walk and....
I'm putting on a motorcycle inspired charity art show at The Art Center CoOp - 229 North Hogan St - 5-9pm May 4th (ArtWalk). Proceeds from the silent auction are going to the Wolfsons Children's Hospital!
What? I thought nothing happend Downtown and no one goes there!

well apparently it gets even crazier...the Landing is also doing something special for May 5
It's about time that the Landing got something started for Cinco de Mayo. I went downtown a while back and there was NOTHING going on for Cinco de Mayo. I might as well have been living in Middleburg or Keystone Heights.
Isn't there a restaurant in the landing CALLED Cinco de Mayo?! Seems a bit obvious :-)
Its a holiday... they are closed.

Yep. and they have an enourmous 12 different tequila's to choose from (3 of those under the Cuervo brand) #sarcasm
But I guess they make up for it by serving their beer in plastic mugs.... (32 oz / $4)
A few of my friends went to The Landing last year and they said it was really lame. Hopefully it's not so bad this year.
I'd like to do BG, but I imagine they'll be slammed and I would actually like to eat some of their delicious food. I'm probably going to hit up the San Marco La Nop like I usually do.
One place I definitely WON'T be is Cantina Laredo. Their commercials that keep repeating ' Cinco di Mayo' or 'Cinco d' Mayo' make me want to rip my ears of. D-E is pronounced like DAY. Their ignorance is maddening.
The people who own the Cinco de Mayo at the Landing are the same owners of La Nop.
I haven't been to the one in San Marco, but the one on Roosevelt is horrendous. The food at Cinco de Mayo isn't horrible, but I expect better. Some of the best mexican food in the area is at the little dive on Blanding - El Mariachi. Don't go in there expecting to be WOWed by decor and service, but the food seems to be made fresh (uneven cuts in the pico, the salsa has mis-matched chunks and I've had large chunks of avacado in the guac) all those things lead me to believe that most of it is made in house. The other thing that I loved was when ordering a rellano - the server (family I believe) told me that they didn't have any large peppers at the market this morning, only small ones, so we'll give you 3 today instead of 2. - I would love to believe that they hit up the farmer's market for fresh produce, but I don't know for sure.
La Nop has been around for over a decade. The Hendricks location is the first. The food isn't gourmet by any means, but it's tasty and I've been eating it for years. Two brothers (I believe) out of the family who owns La Nop wanted to go slightly more upscale, so they opened Cinco de Mayo.
I don't really trust the Landing to do a great job with the Cinco de Mayo party, so I'm going to save myself the disappointment and not go.
I wish Mossfire would do a block party similar to the St Patty's day party put on by O'bros.
They are.

Well that's convenient. If anyone needs me, I'll be wandering around there from about 7-11.
I dont see how anyone can screw up a Cinco de Mayo party. All you need is plenty of beer and tequilla and by the end of the night everyone will be having a good time.

They should just call it La Nop then, so I don't have to remember so many Spanish words.

Saying "upscale" and "The Landing" just doesn't taste right coming out of my mouth. But you did say "slightly" so that's fair.

If you've ever been to the La Nop on Hendricks - I get the feeling serving Mexican food out the back of a pickup truck would be "slightly more upscale."
Great food, though!
The one on Hendricks is a serious dump. I refuse to go there. Now the one at the Landing, that is high class!

That is part of the charm! Any of the newer ones are more upscale. We call the one on Philips at Baymeadows the "fancy" one.

I agree with Danno. I've been going to the Hendricks location since it only had the 1 dining room (in '02 or so). The ceiling tiles were falling down, the floor was nasty gray carpet, and the walls had water spots, but the food was excellent. What is there now is 30 times nicer than what was there previously, but the taste of the food has remained the same. It's comfort food for me, so I'll be there until I die or they go out of business. Eating at any of the newer ones just doesn't feel right to me.
My ONLY complaint with La Nop is that their guac comes out of a giant bucket. There's no way that stuff is fresh. And yet, I still order it most times I'm there. Also, the tamales aren't great.
No respectable mexican eatery should have sub-standard tamales.
That is one of the true items that should be outstanding.
As a matter of fact, if I ever opened up a mexican restaurant, one of the positions to fill would be masa grinder. Requirements: At least 60 years old, not able to speak english and had to do it as a child back home.

My wife and I have a few tamale sources. Top secret of course...
As do I, sir. ;)
While we're on the subject, mexican food that is, whatever happened to the Chevy's / Rio Bravo chain? "No cans in our kitchens!" - Every time I went there the food was awesome. Even more spectacular was that they did provide fresh everything - as a national chain. I was really sad when they packed up and moved away.
