Title: Partial Salvation of the Jewish Center
Post by: johnnyroadglide on April 27, 2011, 12:05:54 PM
Just heard a rumor that Burkhalter Wrecking, who are taking down the Jewish center are doing everything they can to try and preserve the front door and the menorrahs. Rumor has it that they piled up a large amount of sand right there at the front steps and hope to drop that entry way onto the sand thereby salvaging it. Not sure why but my guess would be to sell it. Just a rumor. I have no facts to back this up.

I believe they piled the sand there because water was running down the steps big time while they were putting the fire out, but I could be wrong as to its purpose.

The neighborhood asked them to try to salvage the artifacts on the front of the builiding, but the blocks are really heavy.  We are hoping...

As the salvage/demo contractor, Bulkhalter owns the salvage rights. So they are definitely within their rights to sell anything they can salvage from the building.

Why?  Because those artifacts may be all that can be salvaged from this iconic building, a victim of arson. A piece of Jacksonville history, and a piece of the history of the Jewish community in Springfield.  We in Springfield are heartbroken by the loss of this building.  If anything can be salvaged, it would at least make us feel a little bit better.

Such a shame.. but at least something of the building is spared.
