Title: On the Formal Track...
Post by: sheclown on April 24, 2011, 07:14:07 AM

From what we could gather from available records:  There is no LIST of Formal Track.

1925 North Liberty Street

April 28, 2010: HPC Commission approved property to be placed on Formal Track for demolition after 9 months.

This is one of my favorites.  It is a cute yellow house, boarded up, adorable.

from Nicole, in an email to city officials:
Quote
Good Afternoon/Evening Everyone,

I have no shame in begging for your help. I mean I know I've asked all along, but I'm not sure that everyone really grasps the dire need. Whether is it a fire (The Job Corps Building this morning,) or demolition by neglect, we continue to lose houses at a rapid pace. Keep in mind Springfield is listed on the NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES. It DOES mean something significant.

My one and only goal is to "Save the houses." And let me excentuate the "period." Save the houses PERIOD. We, Preservation SOS, have tirelessly researched our homes in danger, been team players with both HPC and SPAR, built (what I hope to be,) a positive working relationship with MCCD, and have helped home owners in need get their homes into compliance. Additionally, Dr. Gaffney is aware (I call and email,) about our concerns (fires and demolitions.)

While I realize that homes on the unsafe structures list (from MCCD,) may be considered "11th hour" houses. I don't care. I honestly don't think, (or don't want to believe,) that those charged with protecting our homes truly understood what the practice of the "formal track" is. It is a track that that sentences a historic home to demolition. Where is the list of homes approved for the demolition track? One doesn't exist. We've extracted addresses via records searches through HPC Meetings, MCCD Active Case files, and MCCD Unsafe structures list but that is all we've got.

Please, for the love of God, is anyone listening? I am told that there is no way out. That homes "approved" by the HPC for the formal track (demolition,) have met their fate. There is no way to look back a WHOLE year later and go "hey, we made a mistake a year ago and this is wrong." Specifically I am speaking about 342 W. 10th Street, "Patterson Apartments." A lot can change in a year.

As you may have read in the draft mothballing legislation, over 450 homes have been demolished in Historic Springfield since 1987. 450!!!!!!!!! Can you hear me screaming that? Folks, we in Springfield continue to lose neighbors, lose density, and live among vacant, overgrown lots. Springfield is an inner-city neighborhood, not a rural country town!!!! Oh, wait!! With the continued demolitons, it is quickly becoming that!!!

I am concerned that people don't care about Springfield and just say "Oh, it's Springfield, they don't matter, who cares." I care. I know LOTS of folks in and out of Springfield that care. But do the people charged (all of you,) care? Springfield matters. SPRINGFIELD MATTERS. I write these emails and hear practically NO response. I did receive one: a thank you for caring about Springfield. You don't need to respond in writing to me, I would rather you respond with your actions in taking ACTION to protect our homes from demolition. And this includes demolition due to fire (yup, arson we all all know that is true,) and demoliton by neglect. Protect our homes. Give us neighbors, not empty lots.

And for the record, I will not go quietly. I will fight, we all we fight, for our houses. Because once it is gone, it is GONE. Dylan Thomas put it best: "Do not go gentle into that good night, rage, rage against the dying of the light."

It is a mess.  We need to find out what houses out there already have "permission" (and not eligible for appeal, at that) for demolition.  These are the houses in the most danger.

Perhaps they could be saved if sold or donated.  These are the houses that need attention right now.

But, it is difficult to figure it out.

Many of these properties have not been on the market for sale since the real estate bust.  Some could have sold at the right price.  Even now the owners could donate them to a non-profit and take a tax write off.  We need to do some mailings to contact these owners and make them aware of choices other than a demo.  Argh!

Makes zero sense to me. Sit on a condemned property, do nothing for it and accrue fines ...finally let it get demolished and presented with a bill for that.  Or donate the property, quit-claim it, whatever to someone who would do something for it.

As Madea would say.. HELLURR????

pick 1/2 or less of the ones you feel you can make the most leg-way with.  I think the Tarpons should stay together though.  Let me know which ones and I'll do the others.  I planned on sending handwritten cards to start so there would be a more likely chance for them to be opened.
I have our flyer I can email if you want too.
you know where to find me.
