Title: Napoleon Bonaparte Broward
Post by: urbanlibertarian on April 19, 2011, 09:01:38 AM
As I was reminded by Abel Harding's Florida Morning blog on jacksonville.com, today is the birthday of Napoleon Bonaparte Broward for whom the Dames Point Bridge is officially named.

My late uncle always pointed out that the Dames Point was actually the Napoleon Bonaparte Broward bridge......

Yep, we've always taken liberities with naming the local bridges. Napolen Bonaparte Broward is called the Dames Point, so why not call the Matthews bridge the "Arlington Bridge" ?

Ok ok i'll never get mass support for that one.

The only one-offs are the Main St. Bridge (John T Alsop) & The Dames Point. I suppose the original names just weren't catchy enough.

Nine syllables is just too much to repeat all the time.  Three is OK.

On the other hand we don't call it the St. Elmo W. Acosta Bridge either.

But "Bonaparte Bridge"?  Sounds too close to "Blown Apart Bridge"!

We could call them the Cable-stayed bridge , the Red Bridge , the Green Bridge, the Blue Bridge and the two grey concrete monsters  .

I'm getting level-headed...  Got the big volunteer recognition going on next week, so I've threatened to shove a couple of coworkers off a bridge! Only, which one?  :D :P

Nah, one of them I'll let live for another month at least - she changed her mind to vote for Alvin!

Back a few years ago, I think around 2007 or 2008, WJCT produced a Documentary called "City of Bridges". It was really good and dove into the history of some of Jacksonvilles early bridges.  It also mentioned the first Fuller Warren bridge, except it wasn't known as the Fuller Warren bridge back then. But I can't remember what they called it. Anyone remember seeing that program and recall the name of the bridge? Its going to bother me all day.

That was it!! Thanks Timkin. Gilmore runs right up to the I-10/I-95 merger.

My wife (born & raised here) had no idea of which bridge was the Hart and which was the Matthews. She had always referred to them as the Red and the Green. I'm finally getting her broken in on the names after three years of work.
