Title: Collins Road Widening and Expansion Project
Post by: NavyGuyAN on April 13, 2011, 04:11:00 AM
I was just curious if any knowS of anything going on about the widening of Collins Road from US-17 to Blanding? I travel through there all the time and several of the trees closer to the road have red tape around them as if there are marked to be cut down for a possible widening of the road. I know Collins is a 2 lane in either direction from Blanding to Rampart before it goes back to a 1 lane in either direction out to Schindler. An again a 2 lane in either deirection is stated to open soon all the way to Old Middleburg Road.
So I guess the big question is if Collins Road is eventually going to be 2 lane in both directions all the way through?

I believe they are putting an exit at Collins and 295 and are probably widening for that.

yes...Collins is being widened...and yes there is an interchange under construction...there are also plans (unfunded for now) to realign the road and build a small interchange with US 17 so that the road passes over the CSX line.

Just wondering. What are the total capital costs associated with all of the recently completed, under construction and proposed Collins Rd projects?

The are adding CD lanes like they did at US 17 and Blanding.

I-295/Blanding/Collins Interchange & C/D System - $140 million in construction
Collins 4-laning (Old Middleburg-Shindler) - almost complete...was around $10 million
Collins Rd 4-laning (Shindler-Westport) - $7 million in construction & ROW
Collins Rd 4-laning (Wesport-Rampart) - $8 million in construction & ROW
Collins 3-lanining (Blanding-Pine Verde) - $2 million in ROW...estimate of $7 million for construction
Collins Rd 4-lane/realignment (Pine Verde-US 17) - estimated $63 million (includes interchange)

$237 million for one seven mile long street over the course of a decade.  This also excludes the annual maintenance cost associated with keeping this roadway usable.  Wow, no wonder we don't have any money.

And most of the area looks to be third world/in decline-certainly unappealing for many.

you know if we wanted to spend this much on a transit project, could you imagine the outcry?

When you say "we", do you mean the city, the state, the country? Part of this funding is coming from the BJP for sure.

Third world? A bit overdramatic, don't you think?

It would be a good way to sell a streetcar project. Name it the "One quarter of the amount we spent on Collins road expansion Streetcar from Riverside to the Stadium and less on maintenance too". A mouthful but it would get the message across very nicely.

Like the last 8 years, look forward for the next 8 to be almost exclusively road projects for the city. I wish there was a way to slow down on road construction and consentrate on infill projects.

I was driving down Collins Rd. Tuesday and it looks like on the North side of the road they have been cutting the brush way back a good portion. The trees are still tagged to be cut down on the South side of the road however they were starting to cut back the brush on the South side yesterday morning. Could it be they are prep'ing for a for lane from US-17 to Blanding so soon. Or probably relocating the utilities.

+1 I like it.
I'd just substitute Riverside with the Prime Osborn for right now. Just go for the single. The straight shot.

The skyway gets you over the river. Thats all I'm saying about that.

The Jacksonville street car plan and we'll take the track around Andrew Jackson. CSX-Somebody ask them about what it would take to Make it Happen.

I'd volunteer.

LETS BACK the TRACK JACK!
