Title: Best delivery in Riverside/Avondale
Post by: jaxzjax on April 10, 2011, 07:39:01 PM
Okay...everyone commented so much on best breakfast, I figured I'd go ahead and ask my second most burning question about the area, even though it probably won't spawn as many answers.

Best delivery in Riverside/Avondale?

I just moved from San Marco so I'm really missing Jimmy Johns. And I'm kind of sick of pizza. So let me know best delivery, quickest delivery, places in the area that you might not know delivers, etc. Thanks!

This is timely.  I don't have any to put on the list, but I'll be watching the responses!

Their selection is awesome and the fact that they deliver until 3:00 a.m. is handy. They usually take forever, though.

Yeah, never had Kickback's because I assumed by the time it got to me, it'd be cold.

What about Carmine's???? Best pizza in Jax--rivals Renna's.

I went to Kickback Gastropub this past Friday night. The place is PACKED! I had few beers and enjoyed the atmosphere. Lot of good vibes from different people. Great selection of beers! OMG I am so jealous of the bar. I loved the details on the ceilings where the beer handles are placed.

If they could dominate the whole building by kicking out other space, then expand it would be perfect. They would hire more to handle deliveries only on the side, kinda like Chili's To Go or Olive Garden thingy.

I would love to do their website since they don't have a functional one.

Anyone know how to get into Kickbacks?!

I go there about once every two weeks, to no avail. I know I go at a bad time (7-9), but I go to kinda hoard a seat and post there til' midnight...

It seems everytime I go, there's nowhere to sit, and there's a wait...

do they have a bar/bar seats? Haven't really explored the place...seems like the only places to sit are restaurant-style chairs/booths

The MJ Board loves Kickback's as well.  We have our weekly board meetings there in fact.

Steve is the guy to talk to, Josh.

Can't say enough nice things about the establishment actually.

Food is good, its always packed, great friendly service, and the Riverside clientele is always fun.

Its actually more accomodating for us than Three Layers has been to be honest.  Although we still have our public meetings at three layers on Tuesday.

Is Steve a member here at MetroJacksonville, and if so, what account does he goes by?

The service there can tend to be crap unless you know someone who works there or are extremely aggressive about hounding your waiter. I've had to cancel food orders 3 times in the past after waiting 1+ hours for my food. Twice the staff forgot to put the order in all together. And as such, I've completely written off ordering food there.

If they could deliver in any reasonable amount of time, I'd be surprised.

Best delivery? 5 star is fastest and goes until way late. Maybe not the best pizza, but I can get a pizza delivered to my door in around 20 mins. I have eaten Carmine's twice, if their delivery is as good as their food, I'd have to say they would be the kings of delivery in Riverside.

IMO Best Chinese delivery in the area is Hot Wok on Margaret. Food is always piping hot and they throw in freebies if you order over 20 bucks.

Kickbacks delivery is always timely, it never takes more than an hour. I order from them 2 or 3 times a week. To be fair, I do know most all of the staff from the owner on down but I don't think I'm getting any special treatment or anything. I had one incident with a new waitress where the food hadn't shown up for an hour and we canceled it, but aside from that I've been going there the three years they've been open and have never had another problem. Well other than that same waitress being a bitch shortly after she started working there and trying to save a prime table for her friends and telling us we couldn't sit there. I told her to screw off, since seating has always been first come first serve, and she went off in a huff and got Steve, who said I was right and to drop it. So yeah that one waitress is kind of a bitch, but I love the rest of the staff there. Tell Steve if something goes wrong, he'll fix it. All around great place.

I have only been a few times but it has been really good all three times.  Twice we had a eight people and they accommodated pretty quickly even though they were packed.

Hey look!   Its Steve!

As far as delivery.... Im going to say:

1) Kickbacks
2) Hot Wok

... I used to be a big fan of China Joy, but in the past two years it seems the quality has gone down some.... Hot Wok is freaking awesome though....

Takes about 4 minutes to cook, the best, most healthful, locally sourced
neapolitan pizza in jax, OH YEAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In fact, I'd say THE ONLY WOOD FIRED NEAPOLITAN PIZZA IN JAX!!!!!
COMING TO THE CORNER OF PARK AND KING, THE HOTTEST COMMERCIAL DISTRICT IN RAP!!!

The pizza booth at RAM does wood fired pizzas in the only truck-mounted brick oven I've ever seen...

Definitely some backyard ingenuity went into it, I was marveling at it last Saturday

The pizza booth at RAM is Pele's Fire. They are going into the old pharmacy on the corner of Park and King, providing they get the final few details ironed out.

So to answer the original question - other than pizza and Chinese, Kickbacks has the market cornered, and their delivery hours beat out all the pizza places and Chinese joints.  Five Star is my choice for pizza delivery.  Haven't tried to order delivery from Carmine's, but I've heard from others that it's hit and miss - they don't necessarily staff a delivery person, so if they're busy, you're SOL.  If you try to order delivery at like 4PM, your chances are good.  If one of the countless sushi places in the neighborhood would deliver, they could probably double their business in no time.

I just called Burrito Gallery and the girl said that they don't deliver. Like, at all. But I thought they did deliver at least to downtown?

Now I can't think of a single Mexican place that does deliver to the downtown/Riverside/Avondale/San Marco area.

This could be a great opportunity to start apart time independent delivery business.
Food deliveries to people in the Riverside/Avondale/Murry Hill area from restaurants in the same area.
Delivery fee could be $5.00 minimum.

I'm voting Kickbacks for delivery.  There have been times when our delivery order was faster than orders we have placed when actually eating at the restaurant.  Now if they just delivered six packs of beer...

The perfect spot is the tiny concrete block structure on Park between
Walgreens and European Street. It has no roof right now but would be awesome for walk up and take home BG.

After visiting over 60 serious BBQ places in my lifetime, Mojo's is NOT one of the best BBQ places I have been to. Mojo has been expanding too fast that some of the quality has suffered in my opinion.

I have been to Mojo's 4 times. For those 3 out of 4 visits, the service and food were mediocre. The food was served lukewarm / cool when I ordered baby back ribs with mac & cheese, and green beans one time. I was disappointed that the hype that build up with Mojo collapsed upon their food along with my expectation.

As long as I have DerbyQ in five points, I am set for BBQ in Riverside.

And I agree with you Josh, I've had MOJOs a few times and I'm still not sure what all the hype is about.  The best thing about MOJOs is the Cheerwine.

I gotta agree with Josh here. Mojo is decent. But no substitute for Fred Cotten or even the bonos on Beach blvd. DerbyQ is doing a great job of filling my BBQ desires. Mojo has the "nice restaurant" thing going for it. But when I think BBQ, I don't think of a nice sit-down restaurant. I think dirty, dingy, smelling like smoke/frying oil/huge slabs of meat served up with a ton of BBQ sauce and the right sides.

Nice place to take your boss/date/someone from out of town for a slightly authentic southern bbq meal. But not even close to the real thing.

I must concur with the Mojo's comments. When we lived in Mandarin we drove to the location in Lakewood and loved it. Veggies and a brisket that was fork tender and yummy. Now we live in Argyle and have tried the location in Fleming Island several times and each visit has been extremely disappointing. Cold sides and over cooked, dry brisket seem to be the norm more than the exception.

I won't go into detail, yet (only a few whiskeys into it), but when rating food, you can't let service affect your decisions.

Just wanted to add a note about Carmine's - they are NOT delivering yet. Found that out the hard way (the hard way being that I had to pick the pizza up in person). And while the pizza was great (really great - I got the Hawaiian bbq or whatever), it took an extra 25 minutes than I thought it would.

But I realized they're only about a month old and they still have some kinks to work out. Seems like a fun place to hang out at.

Josh, you take your life into your hands every time you go to Cotton's. DPBR would not exist without Cotton's. Might as well go to the Shrimp vendors on the side of the road when it's 95 out as well. Not worth it to me, there is better BBQ in town.

I could go to MOJO's but I would have to drive past Monroe's Smokehouse BBQ which is really one of the best BBQ joints in town.  BTW They are using their new mobile truck downtown to see if it is worth putting a brick and mortar location there. So if you want them downtown seek out the truck.

Mojo # 4 opening April 27 at 11 AM. Be there or be like Timken!

Okay boys and girls, enough is enough here, play nice or don't play at all. Be like Timkin? Damn people, we wish we could clone him, or find 1,000 more like him. Timkin is one of the heroes of MJ (more on that in a coming article), without regards to his own popularity, he has taken on the task of being the voice of Annie Lytle school. Timkin is at the meetings, at Tampa, at Jacksonville, at the site, directing the cleanups, organizing the history, digging out the photos, etc...

Yeah, like "Bob Espoonja" this takes the Patience of Job, the bite of an alligator, imagination of a Jules Verne, and the toughness of General Tadamichi Kuribayashi. So let's chill on the personal attacks and focus on the larger enemy, the destruction of our urban fabric or general apathy about all things Jacksonville.

Normally I don't give a damn one way or the other about epidemic local apathy, but in the case of northeast Florida, uh... I forgot what we were talking about.

I sure as hell hadn't! I don't remember fish tanks anywhere in the place though, but maybe that's because I was a regular so long ago that the fish were still so many eggs!

My dad and Willis Butts (Butts mobile homes and properties) were best of friends. After church on Sundays we'd all pile in the car and go to Pat and Mikes for lunch, it was always packed.  Willis gave me my childhood nicknames, "Butch" and "Hamburger." One day Willis showed up in a new 1959 black Sedan DeVille Cadillac... The next Sunday we showed up in a brand new white Sedan DeVille Cadilliac. A Sunday after that Willis came in with a very expensive white Trilby hat (still in vogue at the time) so of course the following week did shows up with a very expensive black Trilby hat! Their sneaky bribes and squabbles to steal the check from the other became legend. Some of the waitresses made out lake bandits taking untold amounts of folded bills as "insurance" that one or the other would get the tab. Yeah, I don't know if I could do the new place, the ghosts might just be too strong for me to handle.

I went to school with Pat and Mike's grandkids from kindergarden through high school.  She had some great barbeques on the bank of the Cedar River growing up.  Went to a lot of birthday partys at Pat's house, lol.

The Monroes food truck is also operating out of Intuition now as well.  Pele's is no longer there.

Really pumped about Mojo's next week!!  They were actually supposed to open on the 7th but pushed it back until next week.
