Post by: sonicsurfer on March 20, 2011, 06:00:01 PM
I want to take pics of skyline from higher ground, does anyone know of any garages where I have good view of the Jacksonville downtown skyline ?

Thanks AvonJax and Not Now, I'm looking to taking pictures of Jax skyline from all possible angles mostly during sunset/sunrise hours and especially when the sky is nice and colorful to get real good colors across the scene.

The Ortega Bridge (Or Stockton Park) is my favorite view of the skyline.

That perspective incorporates all the hi-rise buildings in one frame.

Your Main St Bridge shot is fabulous.

Other great spots include the Beaver Street viaduct (near the Farmer's Market) and Shands Jacksonville.  Here are some old shots from those spots:

I agree 100%; I'll never forget that view of Jacksonville from the Ortega bridge.  Great shot of the Main St. Bridge!

A great shot would be from the outside second floor balcony of the Federal Reserve Building but good luck getting in there, especially with a camera that they explicitly prohibit.  Closest public spot might be from an elevated spot near Prime Osborne such as the Park Street viaduct, an Acosta Bridge ramp (be careful, many cars don't stay in their lanes on those hairpin curves), or the Convention Center or Jefferson Street Skyway station (finally, a use for it!  ;D ).

Sonic, did you get any good photos (or not so good) of the:

GROVE MALL TROLLEY IN LA?
LA UNION STATION?
METROLINK?
AMTRAK?
LIGHT RAIL?

I'd love to see them.

How about from the top of 1661 Riverside.  There is a nice common area with views of the river & skyline and when the sun is setting just right, the skyline will glow pink.

Also, the roof of the Citiplace condos on Ashley (i think) has some nice views of the skyline but it may be too close for your purposes.   Granted you have to have access to both of these buildings, but you are obviously very creative and can figure out a way to obtain access ;)

Here is my picture which is not so good..really

Union station looks really good and I really didn't know about it. Besides I was with friends so taking pics was not a top priority but I would do it when I got a chance. I did take some pics of San fransisco tram.

The Ortega Bridge sounds good to me however from google maps, it looks far away..i.e I do not have a Super zoom lens :(. Thanks for all the different views. I will check all of them out. Floridaforester, views from Bldgs, Garages or even Hotels is exactly what I'm looking . I see that the I-95 has a really good view and I saw a hotel on the right side, I might have to zoom by the hotel, maybe pay them 10-20 bucks for a photo session or something.

Meanwhile here is what I got from todays session close to the friendship fountain. For the first time, I turned off noise reduction on my Olympus E-P1 and it has some white dots on the pics. I guess I will have to go back and take the shots again which I was planning anyways as the sky wasn't that good today.

Hey SONIC...I have 3 places for you to check out...One of them you said was to far away...1.) Which is at Stinson Park of Grand Ave in Ortega. the other place you can try is: 2.) There is a couple of fishing piers d-town across from the Maxwell Coffee Plant...there is some steel I-beams that are extending from the end of the piers...You have to leap onto to get on the piers....and the last place is: 3.) There is a huge parking lot underneath the south end of the Hart Bridge (its a High School parking lot) You can get there using Highland Ave off Alantic...At the end of the parking lot it's about 25 ft.to the water.
I guess you could also try the sewall behind the Duval County Superintendent Office's off Prudentail Dr.
Good Luck and Awesome Pic's

Thanks NavyGuy and Westsider. I'll check the Coffee plant location and the 25th floor of the modis building should be interesting. BTW NavyGuy awesome pics of the Jax Shipping Terminal.

Everyone's pictures in this thread are ridiculously good.  As usual.  Sonic, your Main St. bridge shot is spectacular.

Do try Ortega River bridge, even with non- fancy camera equipment.

Sunrise view angle idyllic.

St.Vincents ideal for southerly river view.

Here's mine from Friendship Fountain.  I took it handheld so it's a little blurry, but it's the best I could get w/o a tripod.

A coworker of mine used to live in the Peninsula, I wish I had brought my camera to take a picture of the skyline at night, but I never got around to it :(

Perhaps the top of the Aetna Building's garage?  Used to work in that building and I've taken some shots from there before... it's free "parking" if you're only there for 30 minutes -- or at least I believe that's the deadline.

The top floor is almost always empty, too.
