Hey Everybody
This has been mentioned in a few other threads, but I wanted to make a new thread to draw attention to the creek cleanup this Saturday, March 19th. The Friends of Hogans Creek (or Hogan's Heroes as I like to say) are partnering with the St Johns Riverkeeper to clean up a new section of Hogan's Creek. I have gone by this section, and it is a different beast entirely from what we have been working on. There will be no shortage of work for volunteers. The area is located behind the Jacksonville Historical Society building at Duval and Palmetto streets. The parking area is off of Monroe. Below I have included an aerial shot of the area with an arrow pointing out the parking area. We'll be getting started at the usual time, 9 am. I'm sure Noone, Field, or Doug have something else to add. I recommend gloves, shoes you don't mind getting dirty, and a positive attitude. I look forward to seeing you all out there!!!!

Don't hate on the arrow, Microsoft Paint isn't the most advanced mapping software
I will add, the cleanup actually starts at 8AM.
See you all there... we need ALL the help we can get!!!!
It really is a lot of fun.
8 am??? That sounds serious. Looks like it will be a 2 Mountain Dew morning for me.
It will be a two bowl of wheaties morning for me. I'm already stocked up for the occassion.
Cleanup is from 8:00AM to 11:30AM.
No pre-registration is required. You will be given a ticket so that you can attend the afterparty at RAM from noon to 2pm. The ticket entitles you to some free food and a tshirt(while supplies last).
Hogans Creek is one of several sites for this city-wide cleanup, but Hogans is going to be by far the most impactful cleanup on the River Celebration Clean Up Day. Plus, you can check out the fantastic Jacksonville Historical Society and their newest aquisition.... the old St Lukes Hospital(buy a membership to both JHS and St Johns Riverkeeper that day and I will personally buy you a Pele's Pizza at RAM or whereever else you want lunch at-within reason, seriously!).
Moms and dads that sponsor boy scout/girl scout troops... this is tailor made for you!
Moms and dads with students in high school that require community service... come on out to Hogans/Jax Historical Society.
Community leaders and council candidates... get your face shown by rolling your sleeves up and getting a little dirty.
Rotoract people(cough Steve), consider the Hogans site instead of the Northbank Riverwalk site this year. I mean that with all earnest respect towards the Riverwalk(I use it daily).
I can guarantee you, your efforts at Hogans Creek are NOT going unnoticed. Our voices are being heard.
If you ever wanted to MAKE IT HAPPEN in our community, this is it!
I will see if I can get a group of guys from my church. Not sure if I can pull it off on this short of notice. This is the first time that this clean up has caught my attention.
Make a scene Downtown. In just 50 hours a location that is becoming the battle cry for not only our city in terms of cleanup but also access as we all look forward to Promote, Celebrate, Access, and Preserve our St. Johns River our American Heritage River.
I was on the Westside yesterday and had an opportunity to spend some time with North Miami and this man is doing so much on this issue that river lovers from this region are just jubilant in the potential that exists not only for Hogans Creek and Downtown but also for the Jacksonville Marina Mile. Ricker, The JMM is happening too.
On the way back I ran into John Crescimbeni sign waiving on Roosevelt. I stopped. I like John. Always have. We'll be paddling Hogans Creek in the future. Not immediately. That's one campaign promise that I know is true. Will work out the details and logistics and that will be a special day.
Ran into Wayne Wood at the HobNob. The man is awesome. Just shared with him the excitement that is growing with RAM and connecting with Hogans Creek. I know I'll be looking for him after the cleanup and wanting to shake his hand again.
As for the cleanup. There are so many reasons why this will be part of Jacksonville's history. It is from 8-11:30. A super duper special thanks to the Jacksonville Historical Society for allowing the access to Make It Happen. It will be a high tide. If you ever wanted that time on the water with your son or daughter in a canoe, kayak, small boat this is it. If you have a small boat you can actually come in from the river and make your way up to the launch site.
There is also plenty to cleanup just from the land area as well. I'll bring a wheelbarrow , shovel, Rake for reaching into those hard to get to places. If you have boots and waders you can bring them. LucasJJ looking forward to seeing you again in fact after seeing you with those waders I'm wanting to get a pair. You just kicked butt.
Field is right. This will be fun. It will also be eye opening for all those that participate as well from so many levels. It is a citywide issue. Its called a River Celebration. Just what are we Celebrating?
Come out on the 19Th and see. Because you are Making It Happen.
We will be there. Has anyone checked the tides?
I will be there bright and early. I am looking forward to seeing another area of the creek. Hopefully I can get around with my waders. We keep moving around though, I may have to invest in a boat.
See you all tomorrow. Bring a friend, bring your sons/daughters and bring some gloves(trust me).
No one leaves one of our cleanups without seeing the potential this land has.
I'll have a few extra pairs of gloves, so find me early. I'll also bring some water bottles again for drinking or washing up.
The only things you absolutely need are gloves, shoes you don't care about, and a positive attitude. Next comes trash bags and water, but I'll take care of that. Beyond that, anything else would be great, but is not necessary to be a huge help!!
If anyone can bring some rope, that's always helpful.

HEY CAP. since the map failed, I tossed this one into the mix for us. Wish I could be there. Did anyone call sanitation? It is likely they would send out some dumpsters and/or trucks as we did on the Econ River cleanup. OCKLAWAHA
In less than 13 hours.
A gathering of purpose.
Be a part of it.
Capt'n, I've loaded 4 kayaks and an inner tube to haul some trash. I'll be land based. But Field, LucasJJ, If you want to get out on the water I've got you covered.
Just a heads up the Jacksonville Historical Society dumpster should not be used. They want to avoid an extra dumping charge. Fully understand.
There should be a huge roll up container and if it overflows we just pile it up on the side.
Once again, this clean up conflicts with other events (clean ups) in Springfield....otherwise I'd be there. Hopefully there will be sufficient numbers to show up for all clean up efforts scheduled for today. Good luck and thanks to those who are donating their time and efforts into all clean up events for today!
Thanks for all the work you do within our community including Hogans Creek. I look forward to joining you next time!
Michelle
When's the next one?

I've emailed SPAR a few times to try to coordinate clean up efforts. I received no response. If you know anyone that would like to assist me, please have them give me a call on my cell phone. I will PM it to you.
Just as an FYI, today's river cleanup was the 16th annual River Cleanup Day sponsored by the city and several corporations with 20 cleanup locations around the city. We didn't purposely do a cleanup to conflict with anyone else's schedule.
That being said, 7 people collected the same amount of trash today at Hogans Creek than nearly 60 people along the Northbank Riverwalk. I'll post up some pictures later this weekend. Off to a family bbq.
We were really able to get a lot done this morning with the group we had. It was really noticeable by the time we were ready to leave. Here is a shot of what we pulled out this morning.

That was a lot to get out, but I'm glad we did. I did a quick 4.5 miler after, and where we cleaned up last month is all dirty again ::)

is that the shopping cart that was nose down under the Adams Street bridge by chance?
and the bike wheel that was hanging in the tree?
What a special day on our urban waterway Hogans Creek. A special thanks to Vivian Harrell with Keep Jacksonville beautiful. She had done a site inspection weeks ago and her follow up with other city departments prepped the location for what turned out to be a rewarding cleanup. Congratulations to all that participated throughout the city and Springfielder we'll get together.
Another special thanks to Keith Myers our site captain and former mayoral candidate. Over the years this time of year has always been a reunion for us. Today was no different. He was there early like always and ready to welcome everyone. He took a spot and transformed it.
We had the kayaks unloaded and LucasJJ was one of the first to arrive We put in and the tide was low and incoming we headed north and spotted the first shopping cart. We went back and got another kayak and used that to tow it in. Field and the Capt. arrived with reinforcements. Mueller was awesome and covered a lot of ground. Will was in one spot that had such a dense concentration of junk that I believe he filled up 4 bags in about a 20'area. He rocked it.
The Capt. sister brought water and food and that was so nice of her to do that.
Field took a kayak and also scoured the creek like we all did finding those high pockets of garbage. The Skiles team. Doug and son Jacob arrived by kayak from San Marco. What a paddle! City leaders, pay attention to that accomplishment in District 5. They paddled to RAM later. Billy to your question about the shopping cart depth chart and tire in the trees. As far as I know they are still there.
It was an absolute pleasure to be a part of todays cleanup with each of you.

I didn't imply, nor did the thought of any intentional conflict of events, enter my mind. What I did say was that your scheduled clean up was on the same day as others in Historic Springfield, and that otherwise I would gladly have joined yours. The one event I mentioned was a Preservation SOS (http://forum.preservationsos.org (http://forum.preservationsos.org)) clean up, which is not part of SPAR.
We will work with you on future scheduling, when at all possible, to prevent conflicts in events. Please, feel free to pm me, and we can exchange email addresses, because Preservation SOS does work along with other organizations for the betterment of our community.
I'm not a member of spar, although the contact person, I would think, would be either Brenda Boydston â€" Executive Director or maybe William Hoff - Parks: 353-7727. http://sparcouncil.org/about-us/contact/ (http://sparcouncil.org/about-us/contact/)
Springfielder is right - Bill Hoff is the person you should contact on the SPAR board. He is involved with their block captains program.
Just an FYI anyone heading over the FDOT overpasses see if you notice the roll up container behind the Jacksonville Historical Society next to Hogans Creek.
The citywide River Celebration was a success and can't wait to hear the results. As to all those who participated with Hogans Creek and the residents of Springfield the access issue for this urban waterway is just getting started. It will continue to be elevated throughout the state.
Everyone is Making it Happen.
This is the Capt's sister, and it was my pleasure to be a part of the cleanup! We have 3 cases of bottled water left, so I'll definitely bring water and food to the next one. I'm sorry that I couldn't stay longer on Saturday. It was incredible to see how much trash was in (and around) that small part of the creek and what a difference just a few people with a few hours could make! Congratulations on a successful clean-up -- I look forward to the next one.
That was the first time I was able to see the creek at high tide. It was very impressive to see the water on the side of the Maxwell House building. So many interesting things. Lots and lots of trash along the banks coming in from the river. By far the biggest producers of the stuff are the people living along the edge. What on earth can be done to make them care? It doesn't bother me so much that they are there, but it kills me to see how they completely disregard our environment.
Cleaning with the kayaks was such a great idea and was really effective. Lucas tied a basket that he found in the water to his kayak and essentially turned it into a pick up truck. We collected a greater volume of trash than I think any clean up we have had yet. There is plenty to still do at that site and many others, but we're making progress!! I'm so excited about the possibilities with this creek.
How long will the dumpster be there? Hopefully for a while because now that we have longer days, I may head over after work for a few minutes of fun cleaning.
How about a cleanup/barbeque/fest? Hang out for a while. Do some cleaner, do some grilling, maybe have a couple beers. Bring back a bag of trash, get a dog (or beer/soda, or burger). Hell, we could even give it out to the locals on the condition that they throw their trash in a can and not the creek.
Better yet, spend the Jags pregame tailgating and cleaning at the creek. And we follow through on Capt's "Hogan's Heroes" idea and get some Jags/Heroes booster shirts. That way when people at the game see the sweet shirts, we can tell them how to get em (even sell the shirts maybe). This cleanup/tailgate would naturally transition into a tailgate/play/swim/yak as the creek gets better and better.
Naturally, I just want to involve drinking in the cleanups, instead of waiting until immediately after.
I like the idea PeeJay.
The Jacksonville Rotaract does one large service event per month. For May, they want to help clean the creek. That's 20+ volunteers right there. If MetJax could throw in another 20, thats a heck of a clean up. If we added burgers, beers, and brats to the mix, we would be making quite the scene downtown.
40 people cleaning Hogans creek and HAVING FUN is pretty tough to ignore.
PeeJayEss and Capt. I like the ideas and the matching enthusiasm. Make no mistake about it that the issue is growing. Could always contact Roberts Eatery 904-485-0273. Also for those still in the May elections contact him and he'll hang your yard sign on his tent. For him it could be a true double. He wants to paddle the creek and see it for himself. And then he could just fire up the grill and cook for all of us.
As for the drinking. I like it. We may have to ask the legislature for our own urban transition area. That may be easier than the parking. Both still require permission and oversight.
Sooooo? When's the next one of these? Capt, you mentioned Rotaract coming in May, that still a pastability? A cleanup is one thing, if we're gonna do food et al we're gonna need to get planning...
Capt. I'm awaiting your orders. I've got my inner tube and I'm ready to tube Hogans Creek. Your leadership on this will then allow us all to attend a board meeting of the St. Johns River Water Management District in Palatka and showcase to the newest member of the Board former Mayor Hans Tanzler that he may have water skied on our St. Johns River but our David led the group that floated down Hogans Creek and thus introduced a new generation of people who are excited about our City, our Downtown, and want everyone to VISIT JACKSONVILLE!
How much would the Jacksonville Historical Society charge to rent the parking area?
Excellent Idea PJ. I've been thinking about this for a week or so. I was thinking about 2-3 weeks from this past Saturday. I'll holler at Rotaract today and see if they are still interested.
