Post by: Garden guy on March 13, 2011, 07:15:17 PM
Could we have a city lottery set up to benifit only public schools?...i know the state lottery was suppose to go to the schools but i don't think it really worked out that way...but what about a local citywide lottery for schools?...

Put casinos on the Shipyards site. It could be our version of the strip.

I'm no puritan, but gambling as a means of economic development won't fit the bill.

Firstly, how diluted is the market for casino gambling?

Secondly, do we really want to increase the size of the casino customer base?

Let's keep those filthy gamblers in the closet. :o

The citizens of this city seem to be doing a good job supporting dozens of those sweepstakes hell holes.

So "filthy gambler"= someone who gambles on something other than a government lottery?

Just a little dig.

I don't oppose gambling per se, (defaulting the concept of liberty and personal choice) but I do think that government sponsored lotteries should be outlawed. (tax on stupidity is fun and profitable, but not what governments should be doing, IMO) I suppose "we the people" need to get up some money by any means necessary.

Likewise, I don't want to see private gambling incentivised (not a word?) by economic development grants or special considerations (i.e. monopolies granted to insiders)

And anyway, once a city lottery was set up to help fund education, it would go the way of the state lottery set up to fund education.   Politicians would see all that lovely money going to little minors who can't vote, and find a way to grab it for something else.

Use David Garrard's face for the campaign.

That'd be the least the Jaguars could do...as much cash as they get from this city...why not?

Obviously you missed the humorous reference. There is a current lawsuit between the Jags and one of the gambling boat lines in Mayport for using Garrard's imagine on their offshore betting ads.

Oh the Florida Lotto still funds the school system, the problem is they took away other forms of funding from it.
