HERE'S A CONCEPT WORTH TRYING... SHALL WE RUN WITH IT?

The TUTS by SHIFT BOSTON another action group Thinking-Out-Of-The-Box!

I am thinking we need to call a physical meeting of like minded "Jaxsons of Action." Within our MJ community and within the greater NE FL community we have incredible talent, wealth, and philanthropist abilities. We also have a tremendous push and/or pull with the political machine of the area.
I would like to organize a meeting of people interested in the following, with a target of forming around each subject:
Here are some sample subject ideas - ripe for creation and development.
* Southern Fried Rock and Blues
Streetcars and Interurban museum
Negro Leagues Baseball and/or other sports hall of fame/national museum
Railroad Museum and A.P. Randolph memorial
Riverwalk Walk of Fame, life size statues of famous Jaxsons.
Aquarium Project, large, small, medium, wholly owned or co-oped.
Local Historic Building/at Risk Building, intervention and preservation
Civil War History - local/regional - preservation of sites and historic markers
Airships, balloons, blimps, Zeppelins, and Dirgables a North American Museum
Canoe and Kayak Trails and Launching Facilities and waterway preservation
*
Some may have more then one interest, and others may have a suggestion for something not mentioned above.
Organize: Elect officers, incorporate.
Apply for 501c3 status: with the IRS
Assemble: A list of talent, ideas, funds, volunteers, political contacts and insiders, liaisons with the City and State, grant writers, real estate professionals, legal services, trades, managers, industrial and office services, data processing, major corporations and philanthropists, concert and show promoters.
Form Task Forces: Around each targeted project, with the ability to utilize a database of a corporate pool of talents.
Design project missions: Similar in format to the planning charrettes.
Elect project officers:
Create project calenders and targets:
...And hit the ground running.
LET'S MAKE THESE THINGS HAPPEN IN JACKSONVILLE.OCKLAWAHAOCKLAWAHA @ metrojacksonville messages
Ock, On the surface it sounds just so warm and fuzzy and I just want to say sign me up and lets do it. Lets make it happen.
I've come up with my own little jingle.
"You want to be a 501-c."
"Taxpayer dollars for every 501-c."
Just take your last item.
Canoe + kayak trails + launching facilities + Waterfront Preservation. How many 501-c's are represented already in this category. And each one is fighting to secure grant and taxpayer dollars. I've got some real concerns just with the existing structure.
Just with the existing 501-c's who are good and who are bad.
The other day CityLife and I did Hogans Creek and each time you learn more and observe so much more and you are next to and actually part of all these other 501-c's. But then those 501-c's that are water related and you think would be the biggest chearleaders are no where to be found.
Ock, Don't get me wrong. What your suggesting is good stuff. But this is why when I go outside of Duval County especially with the Commissioners of FIND Florida Inland Navigation District and to just use the example of a pocket pier floating dock at a Waterfront Public Access street end and the Commissioners representing the east coast of the state of Florida are sharing their success stories and there is unbelievable support and yet not one city council member or Mayoral candidate is promoting one. You just want to say DON'T VISIT JACKSONVILLE! Just wait you will see some of the greatest restrictions of Public Access and economic opportunity ever imposed on our St. Johns River our American Heritage River.
Ock, I agree that we could use more coordination in these efforts. Many of the organizations already exist that are doing the individual work - but sometimes they seem to be going in different directions, like Noone mentioned above.
The problem is that most of us already spend too much time in board meetings, workshops, vision studies, etc. I like what MJ provides as a way to bring attention to various efforts and attract participants. Perhaps we could have a page setup on this website that lists the various community efforts and provides contact information for each one. The 'leaders' of the efforts could provide regular updates. Sometimes searching for previous posts gets a little difficult to find information and the momentum is lost.

We have dozens of people sitting on the sidelines full of knowledge, abilities and energies, and nowhere to go. I fully understand where you and Doug are coming from, and have a personal history of starting up more then a half dozen of these corporations.
They have all had one thing in common, they are WORKING corporations as opposed to paper pushing tigers. For example in Central Florida in 1990 we had no less then 10 Companies of historic reenactors, several historical societies, a half dozen "Sons," and "Daughters," groups, plus park, school, and other volunteer organizations. But NOT ONE GROUP had ever lifted a finger to get the historic sites at the core of their existence on the map. A small group of friends and I, incorporated THE FLORIDA CONFEDERATION and today about a half dozen historic markers have been placed, several battlefield and historic sites, two cemetery's and a marine site preserved. Here is a sample project: http://www.fcphs.com/Horse_Landing_Project.htm
Another group were the collectors and builders of steam powered machinery, of which Jacksonville has a disproportionately large number due to railroad and shipyards. Everyone was trying to create their own miniature kingdom but operations were a lonely endeavor. I ran a magazine story about a "large group" gathering, and hoped someone would show up... Within a month we were incorporated as the JACKSONVILLE LIVE STEAMERS, a name we have since changed to THE NORTHEAST FLORIDA LIVE STEAMERS AND RAILROADERS, to better describe our scope. We went from a bunch of unconnected hobbyist to one of the larger train clubs in the USA almost overnight. Here is a link: http://matson.us/neflsri/
The last thing I want is another "tea and crumpets" society that talks about history while buildings fall, or takes photos of a river while paper mills install pipelines for poison slurry. I'm talking about an action group and an action clearinghouse of resources. Pottsburg Creek? Who owns a chain saw! Canoe Landing? Bulldozer and a Oklahoma State Prison that makes wonderful signage. I'm tired of the talk and the dozens of disconnected people who moan and complain but have nowhere to turn. Certainly Doug, no one person or persons would or could be expected to carry more then whatever they can painlessly offer. But as we write, there is no list of resources, no back up plans, and in most cases scattered and ineffective passions.
My example works like this:
For several years now a MJ member has has held off destruction of, sought and got restoration of security, and could be close to preserving PS-4 Annie Lytle School...
What if we could plug this into the City's historic preservation? What if there was an alternate use that could be assumed by the COJ? What if someone donated a ton of paint or a local architect came up with a plan that was then executed by the Florida National Guard? It could happen! The pools of talent, materials, and labor as well as the legal, medical and safety aspects of any project are already in place, we just need to organize.
The whole reason behind the committee-per-project approach is to avoid more mindless board (bored) meetings and add layers of action available from a comprehensive resource list. Who is going to save Fire Station 5? Who cuts the tree falls on Pottsburg Creek? Who arranges a Negro Leagues museum? I hope you see where I'm coming from. OCKLAWAHA
I am an Gopher... and would do anything to save any piece of remaining Jacksonville History....not JUST Annie Lytle School or FS#5. Ock knew without asking, IM ON BOARD. What say you, the rest of MJ members?
