Amtrak is the best we have. Did you see the special train out west, the ultra-luxury train bit the dust? Went bankrupt.

Certainly did, another sad story, trying to make a profit in a business where the margins are slim and the risk is incredibly high, you've got a better chance at the faro table. The odds for private operators could be changed greatly if the government took over all financial responsibility for track, traffic control, stations, and paid for seats to small markets. I'm sure if that happened some people would be crying "subsidy" and some of them demanding all of the funding be stopped.
