It’s no secret that the Port of Jacksonville’s navigation problem that restricts large container ships from calling on the port about two-thirds of the day is restricting the port’s business potential.

Still, it’s another matter when it appears that one of Jacksonville’s competitors is using the tidal restrictions, known as Mile Point, to show up Jacksonville and other ports. The Alabama State Port Authority wasn’t available for comment.

The I-4 connector is being paid for by FDOT and stimulus...hardly Tampa investing in Tampa

Regardless even if Alabama's port is more efficient than ours, Alabama will always be Alabama, and Florida will always be Florida. It will be interesting to see the changes in the 3 mil renovation; Hopefully dredging is top priority.

"WHEN YOUR BAY IS ONLY 12 FEET DEEP, CALL JAXPORT!"

Yeah, they have a channel that is 108' feet wide and 45' deep, but that isn't all the way in, up in the downtown area it is only 40', and the damn bay is shallow enough to walk across on a low tide in many places. Would make a hell of a photo - some guy in a suit out of sight of land, standing in 2' of water that on the surface looks like an ocean...

There are mainline railroads east, west, and north out of Mobile, BUT...  CSX runs east to JACKSONVILLE, north to BIRMINGHAM, and west to New Orleans and the west coast. Southern and Canadian National both enter town over what amounts to secondary or branchline's. Also, rail service north out of Mobile is less then stellar, in fact when they land cargo for the northeast, it could very well move on CSX direct to Jacksonville and hence north!
