Title: Where County Property Taxes are Being Spent
Post by: Cricket on December 18, 2010, 03:12:28 PM
St. Johns County Budget based on 2010 data shows 58.4% going to public schools and other Special Taxing Districts. My guess is that a whopping 50% is allocated to education. The next biggest allocation is 15.9% towards the Sheriff's Office. I am curious as to what percentage of property taxes in Jax/Duval goes towards public schools. Does anyone have the answer?

2009 Rates were as follows:

County (non-school) - 9.28 (54%)
Public Schools (by state law) - 5.08 (29%)
Public schools (by local board) - 2.50 (14%)
Other - 0.45 (3%)
Total - 17.31

It is the state-mandated property tax that Rick Scott wants to cut...you'll notice that he would have to virtully wipe out the state requirement to cut property taxes by 19%

Of course he's just playing math games...a 19% reduction in the state-mandated portion (which will be very difficult btw) would still only yield a 5% reduction in the overall property tax for folks in Duval.
