Ok so the bcs bowl game in Jax is called the GatorBowl right? In 2010 thats a stale name! Says nothing about the Jax Metro at all. Is it named after the Florida Gators? The Alligator Farm? The Old stadium name? Its not a big city name. Very trailerpark if you ask me. Why does Jacksonville keep that name? The Florida Gators dont even play in the game, so its free advertising. How bout the RiverCity Bowl or Swisher Bowl or hell even the Navy Bowl..something that actually connect to Jacksonville as a city & not a town by gainesville.
dude....please stop....the Gator Bowl name has been used for decades...it has very little, if anything, to do with the University of Florida Gators.
I mean, does Orange Bowl say Miami to you...or Sugar/New Orleans...or maybe you would rather us be like ATL who renamed the Peach Bowl the Chick-fil-A Bowl?
Because before everbank field there was the "gator bowl" game that was held in the Gator Bowl. Its a tradition and has been around for decades. When something is a tradition is not a good idea to come in and just change the name. We would lose the game altogether.

Thank you. Coolyfett time to let it go please. This -- right along with your disrespect threads about the Jags let it go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't feel that Atlanta and Chick-fil-A should've renamed the Peach Bowl. Since tradition tends to determine stuff like this, the renaming was less than a stellar decision, IMO.
"The Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl" might've worked, a la the Autozone Liberty Bowl (go Knights!) and such. If there's going to be a corporate sponsor, keep the bowl name and use both.
Discover Orange Bowl, Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, etc.
Looks like the Gator Bowl doesn't have a sponsor this year. Wonder how that'll play out?
I am not a football fan but 10 minutes of internet research reveals that the Gator Bowl was started in 1946 and had nothing at all to do with the UF Gators. In fact, the Gators didn't even play in the Gator Bowl for the first seven or eight games.
I can't think of a good reason to change the name of a football game that has been played under the same name for over 60 years...
First off, I don't think it's a BCS bowl - but I know what you're trying to say. And like the others said, the Gator Bowl has a great tradition and would be ludicrous to change it.
Sugar Bowl? Because Louisiana grows a great deal of the nations sugar!
Citrus Bowl? Because Central Florida grows a great deal of the worlds citrus!
Peach Bowl? Because Georgia is "The Peach State," among other things!
Sun Bowl? Because HAS IT EVER RAINED in El Paso?
Rose Bowl? Because Californian's were so excited to find out roses grow in the desert!
Hula Bowl? Because dirty old men need a hobby and Hawaii provides for that fantasy!
GATOR BOWL? Have you ever tried skinny dipping in the Ortega River headwaters? The truth will come to you man!QuoteHistorically speaking, great names have always been a part of the bowl game landscape. (College bowl games date back to 1902, when Michigan beat Stanford 49-0 in the Rose Bowl.)
Here are some of my favorites:
The Bacardi Bowl: This game was held in Havana, Cuba, from 1937-1946! Can you believe that? In the last game, Southern Miss destroyed Havana University, 55-0. Starting quarterback Michael Corleone escaped unscathed and Fidel got pissed. The rest is history.
The Cigar Bowl was held from 1947-1956 in Tampa. There’s a Bill Clinton joke here somewhere, I know it.
With the hubbub of this year’s New Era Pinstripe Bowl, to be played in Yankee Stadium, you’d think it was the first bowl game ever held in NYC. It’s not. The Gotham Bowl was played in 1961-62. It wasn’t a smashing success: the 1962 game drew just 6,166 fans. Columbia University games may even draw more folks. Well, maybe not.
The Raisin Bowl was played in Fresno from 1946-1949. But really, it was nothing more than a dry, shriveled version of the Grape Bowl, wasn’t it?
The Salad Bowl was played in Phoenix from 1948-52. For real.
The Tobacco Bowl was played in Virginia until 1984. Bodegas all over New York City still sell the memorabilia. (Those are for tobacco, right?)

You're right, it should be something associated with the city in which it's held. Let's change it to the Parking Meter Bowl.

"The Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl" might've worked
It was called exactly that for a few years, but traditionalists continued to refer to it as the Peach Bowl without the corporate sponsor name. Chick-Fil-A ponied up a few more dollars to get the game to drop the "Peach" entirely so people would have no choice. It was this extra money that allowed the game to outbid the Gator Bowl for the #2 ACC selection.
The Bowl that hates itself.
The Empty Bowl would be a better name on Jag game days.

Yeah if it were empty. Avg 60 thou per game is not empty!
apparently you have missed this entire season. I really hope that wasnt a serious comment. Ock, your comments were great! i got a laugh out of the Ortega River piece.
Seriously, come out from under your rock dogwalker.
Hey! I was just making a joke. Had to find something that went with Empty Bowl. Maybe I should have called it the EverFull Bowl.
Didn't it used to be called the Mazda Gator Bowl back in the '80's?
Toyota was a recent sponsor....followed by KonicaMinolta....last year and this year it is the Gator Bowl - sponsored (or brought to you) by the employees of W. W. Gay
Mazda was the first title sponsor, beginning in 1986 and lasting for five years. Outback Steakhouse sponsored the Gator Bowl for three years beginning in 1992, prior to obtaining their own Outback Bowl held in Tampa, Florida. From 1996â€"2006, the title sponsor was Toyota. Konica Minolta then became the sponsor from 2007 to 2010.[6] There is currently no sponsor for the 2011 Gator Bowl and beyond.

From Wiki:
The 1946 and 1947 games were played in Fairfield Stadium, which had a seating capacity of 7,600. The stadium was expanded to 16,000 seats in 1948, and the structure was renamed the Gator Bowl. Prior to the 1949 game, the seating capacity was expanded to 36,058, at which it remained until 1957.[3] That stadium hosted the game through 1993, when it was almost completely demolished for the construction of Jacksonville Municipal Stadium on the same site. During the construction, the 1994 Gator Bowl was played instead at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida; the game following the 1995 season and all subsequent games were moved to January 1.
But call it the GatorBowl?? UF does not pay for that game, and its a municiple stadium, so why still call the game that? Orange Bowl, Peach Bowl, Sugar Bowl & Rose Bowl all make sense (Sugar Bowl should be the SpicyBowl just sayin), Gator Bowl makes no sense to call it that. Miami has more alligators than Jacksonville does. Navy Bowl is still a better name to me or AquaBowl since Jax has a lot of water, but the GatorBowl name should be replaced so Jax can have its own identity.
LMAO I give up,,white flag flying,,lol,,lol

REALLY? Dude I wouldn't bet the farm on that... Miami has urban canals and the glades are NOT Miami... However Jacksonville has more rivers and creeks then Carter has pills. Many of Miami's reptiles are NOT gators anyway, they are imported Caimans, and Salt Water living North American Crocodiles. Both of these types are not nearly as pedestrian friendly like our lovable alligators are. In any case, why not run a census and get back to us... Ooh!OCKLAWAHA

yea, I get the point on tradition, but where did that name come from? Thats the question I am asking here. If its the Alligators as an aminal then, why not specify? Maybe it was a bit backwards to name it something based on a college in a nearby town, but I am still not sure where that name camr from.

Hmmm...dumb question, where is the Ortega River "exactly"? Im from the westside I am thinking it is the waterway that Roosevelt & 103rd Street cross. Also man picks of these red eyed animals would be cool. Where else in Jax has a high amount of Alligators??
Trout River, Cedar River, Pottsburg Creek, Banks of the St. Johns, Guana, Intracoastal Waterway....they are everywhere. In the spring you can walk out on your favorite golf course with a light and find little ones in the water hazards.
Just dig a hole in Florida and a gator will move in. The newly built South Campus of FJC (now FSCJ) was teaching canoeing on their lake out front when they noticed gators had moved in. That subdivision off Kernan? Was it Ashley Woods? There's a "nature preserve" a/k/a swamp that backs up to homes there. You can bet there are gators, and one moved into the lake on Soaring Flight there that I know of. A company I used to work for had to have a gator removed from a retention pond at apartments near Regency when northerners who didn't know better started feeding it and we became concerned about babies and pets. Coming up to Clark's Fish Camp in a 16' boat, we passed a dead gator as long as the boat. What could be more appropriate for Florida than Gator Bowl?
I remember a Gator off Lem Turner when I was a kid that was in the street dead a big one. I never played in that river again.
I thought that Progressive became the sponsor of the Gator Bowl very recently?

Just listen for the young ones croaking...you can tell it's NOT a frog. "Lighting Up" a bunch of reflective Red eyes is easy in most ponds and lake edges..a Q-Beam type spot light works best, and their eyes really do flash back at you.
Do not let "Precious" out of your sight! especially in those Ponte Vedra homes where the grass disappears into the pond edge.
Kinda like a 360 degree reptile boat ramp. :o
I used to work for a lake managment company here in town. Our job was to keep our client's lakes (retention ponds) free of algae and invasive aquatic plants. I can tell you with complete confidence that every subdivision, shopping mall, church or school with a retention pond will have a gator, an otter and maybe some nutria if you are lucky. I remember an aprtment complex off of Southside that had some kind of weird bird that looked like a freakin' DoDo. There are lots of strange animals about in our waterways. So anyway, Jacksonville is the gateway to Florida. Alligators mean Florida to a lot of visitors and they usually don't discern North Florida from South or Central Florida. This has nothing to do with UofF.
Back when the St John's was so polluted, they thought about using the new name "Toilet Bowl". The official sponsor was going to be Ty-D-Bol deodorizers, but some felt that idea never really got fully flushed out.
The other option was going to be the "Homeless Bowl" where it was going to be sponsored by Campbell's Soup since they supply all of the soup kitchens here in Jacksonville.
At one point they also considered the "Google Bowl", but they discovered that when the contracts were sent to the State's Attorney for review, they couldn't seem to keep the records very long as they kept getting accidentally destroyed.
Of course it could be called the "Skyway Bowl", but no one wanted to go because they didn't think the game would end up going anywhere and gave up.
And the beat goes on......
^^^why are we talking about this again?
^^^ LOL
I am surprised that nobody has mentioned the Baptist Bowl! Never to be played on a Sunday and completely booze-free!
Give it a rest! Can we keep at least one tradition in this town. Or do we have to destroy them all, just like our downtown building stock?
Jacksonville: the city that keeps trying to rebuild the past we never had!
How about we just keep our past and build upon it? Or is that to much to ask?
Personally I like the name.
Yep,,dont even know why this is even being discussed. On the long list of things to worry about this didn't even make it. Go GatorBowl!!!!
