A camouflage-clad Florida dance troupe desperate to make it to a live TV talent show set off a rush-hour terror scare when they ditched their cars in merciless Lincoln Tunnel traffic and tried to sprint through the tube.

The FBI-NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force was called in -- and a massive contingent of heavily armed cops surrounded the harmless performers, who stood teary-eyed in their showy costumes as hundreds of angry drivers were stuck in the snarl.

"They drew their guns on us at first," said Landon Burse, 24, the group's executive director who arranged the appearance on BET's "106 & Park" segment "Wild on Wednesday."

"It was terrifying. I was crying," said Eternity Odom, 16, one of the four girls who perform in the group.

The tunnel was closed for 45 minutes before cops realized the eight-member team was headed to the studio on West 57th Street. They eventually offered them a police escort to make the show.

But it was too late -- the hard-headed producers of the live talent show told them not to bother, sending them in a trail of tears back down the New Jersey Turnpike.

The group, called "Club Envy," had set out from Jacksonville about 24 hours earlier with stardust in their eyes as they hit I-95 for the 1,158 mile trip north -- a trip for which they spent three months holding local fundraisers.

The first 23½ hours went off without a hitch, but the trip hit a traffic snarl at the tunnel's New Jersey helix around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday.

That's when seven performers and a manager leapt from the two-vehicle convoy and attempted to hoof it for the last five miles.

Alarmed Port Authority cops saw the youths in costumes -- including unfortunate camouflage-colored shorts and vests -- and immediately called the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Among them were Burse and three young men who perform in the group -- Ronnie Killing Jr., 20; Dontel Jabal Madison, 18; Darius Hutchins, 19.

In addition to Odom, three other 16-year-old girls also began sprinting toward Manhattan -- Adaya Foster, Kenya Clark and Courtney King.

They made it all the way to the Manhattan side -- and could actually see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel -- when cops stepped in and detained them.

They were able to explain the group's predicament to a Port Authority lieutenant, who tried to help them.

"The lieutenant called the guy at BET and told him, 'Hey, I can clear the traffic to get these kids there quickly,' but the guy from BET said, 'It's past 6 p.m. and we don't need them now,' " Burse said.

Pat Charles, a writer for the BET show, insisted they "didn't get a call from the cops until they were already supposed to be off the air."

"Unfortunately, the group could not participate in last night's show," added BET spokeswoman Marcy Polanco.

She said the station was willing to reschedule another appearance for the performers.

Odom said she learned a valuable lesson.

"There are a lot of fumes in that tunnel, and we could have passed out or gotten hit by a car," she said. "The next time we come here, we'll stay in our cars."

I almost cried reading this myself.  Hopefully it becomes a national story enough where 106 & Park has mercy on this troupe's poor soul and pays for them to come back up...train next time :)  Kind of a funny story, though

Words of advice for the troupe.  Next time, park in Jersey and take the train in.  You'll bypass all that congestion.

I feel bad for them but a group of people in camouflage cannot go running through NYC tunnels and not expect there to be a problem…

Welcome to New York City!!! I do feel bad for the dance crew, would have been great for them to represent Duval....BUT they were late in NEW YORK CITY.....there is no mercy in that place & they should have known better. They shoul have been camped out two days out front the studio. But they do come from a city that is superior at doing everything at the last minute. I dont blame the producer for being an a$shole. Its New York City thats the way of life up there.

A terrible thing to have happened, and all too easy to judge in hindsight that (obviously) driving into the city is always a bad idea.

Everyone knows you park outside and take the express train right in.    Aside from the fact it is cheaper, faster, and more reliable, it is also quite exhilarating to arrive at Grand Central Terminal when it is your first visit to the city.

Live and learn.   I hope they get another chance from a kind hearted producer in New York.

As for the so-called 'merciless' nature of New York, I'm not sure I buy into any of that.  Anyone who has broken down on Route 95 here in lovely Jacksonville already knows what kind of 'mercy' to expect from the other drivers.   Anyone who has been physically assaulted while riding a bike along the quiet streets of Riverside knows how merciful our drivers can be.

New Yorkers are like big city people all over the world, busy and abrupt.  Ask for help, directions and they could not be more helpful.  Same with Parisians, Londoners, etc.  Just don't ask for directions in Rome, it starts arguments on street corners as everybody has a better route and everybody pitches in.

Hmm, let's see. Ditching cars in the Lincoln Tunnel causing gridlock, running through the tunnel, wearing camo when running in NYC of all places. I understand chasing your dreams and such, but a completely stupid ass way to do it, IMO.

They didn't completely ditch their cars. According to the TU story on this, the drivers remained...

Just saying, cause THAT would've been really stupid.

I read this same article in the New York Post today.  I picked up a copy at the Publix in Riverside and noticed the story when I was having a cocktail at Avondale's Blue Fish.
It seems strange that the dance troupe's executive director did not make better arrangements for their trip.  It's one thing if a guy fails to accurately time a trip across Jacksonville and gets caught in traffic.  It sounds like they attempted to time their trip according to MapQuest and barely accounted for any food, toilet or fueling breaks.  Even if they did manage to get to BET on time, they are crazy for expecting to perform their best act right after a long road trip.  Besides, what about make up and all that other prep stuff?
Next time, I predict that they will get a hotel room the night before their performance and then take the train into town to they could get to BET at least two hours before showtime.

So if I'm getting what I'm hearing people here say, you can't drive into NYC and just drop people in front of a building?  That's not normal?  It happens all the time here and most other cities and towns in the United States.  It's pretty much common sense you can drive and drop someone off in front of a building in a typical city in the United States - it's also a time saver.  Everyone in the country knows the best way to save time is to drive!  What are they going to do, take the slow bus that's usually late like our JTA?  Doesn't seem like an unreasonable assumption.

Isn't New Jersey in another state?  What's this thing called the train?  ;)

Though for this troupe in particular, I wonder why they left at the last minute from Jacksonville.  I'm guessing New Yorkers don't see people wearing camo much.  Though running in the middle of a crowded roadway is probably not the smartest thing in the world to do.

This is right up there with the time that the Lite Brite pictures of the Mooninites shut down the entire city of Boston.

^^Hahaha. Classic.

This news story was brought to us by poor decision making all the way around - on the troupe's part for leaving late and running through the tunnel in highly accessorized camo and also on the part of the excessive response from the Terror Squad.  Lessons learned, right? Probably not.

sez who?

Thats about the most amazing claim ive heard in a while.

You can't just jump out of your car like that. Not in a tunnel.  Not on a bridge. It's terribly dangerous to everyone around. Who doesn't know that?

there is a huge gulf between 'can't' and 'shouldn't'.

The drivers of the vehicles were still in them.

And if no one is moving (which was the case) the only danger is that Homeland Security might mistake your intentions.

It doesn't matter if the drivers were in the cars or not. Traffic stinks. We all hate it, but you can't say "to heck with this" and jump out of the car (even as a passenger) and proceed on foot. Those are not pedestrian areas.

Think of our I-95. Only enclosed and at the bottom of a river.

You can't walk on that.

Ive been in the tunnel. I used to live in the City.  Bleeker and Christopher, across from the old Apothecary, if you know the area. But thanks for the explanation of what 'tunnel' means.

These roads and tunnels were made to enable, not imprison us, Big Guy.

They are made for vehicular traffic. Not pedestrian traffic. It's an underwater tunnel filled with vehicle exhaust. There's a reason why you have to roll your window up when you go through one. It's not for people!

It's too political. No one wants to see a bunch of black kids hassled on a trip to New York. Not at the start of the holiday season. Once it settles down and nobody's paying attention there'll be some more clearly posted regulations.

Well I can't argue with that kind of self view man.

Ah.......I see.  Its because they are black.  Well that certainly explains everything.

Most of us would have thought it was because Homeland Security overreacted in an incredibly expensive, pain in the ass but still amusing kind of way.

But, hey, if the black angle works for you, then I think I get where your coming from suddenly.

Just gotta love you northern, enlightened liberal yankees.  Never fail to entertain.

I am most definately not a liberal. In fact, I'm here to throw my very own crate of tea into the St. John's River.

And yes. Race plays a factor in every single aspect of life, and nowhere moreso than our criminal justice system. Someone has to be honest about it. Race played a part in why the alert was issued. It also played a part in why the matter was dropped. This is not a post-racial society. If anything, we're moving in the opposite direction.

sounds kind of backward and a little ignorant to my southern ears actually.

just letting you know.

racist talk might have been fine in whatever place you came from, but most of us have moved beyond all that.

I'm not trying to deflect my words. When the cameras are off black people get worse treatment than whites. When the cameras are on black people get better treatment than whites. It's terrible that society is that way, but that's just how it is.

And, very few people here have seemed to move beyond it. You can draw lines between racially divided communities here in town.

Im sorry that its that way where you come from.  I doubt that its true, of course.  I think in general people are treated better when cameras are on, no matter what color they are.  I certainly don't think the black people are being treated 'better' than white people under similar circumstances.  Sounds like a bit of paranoid racist fantasizing.

That you apparently cannot tell the difference is the problem.

I think its ridiculous that these kids have this crazy adventure, full of bad ideas, bad timing, stupid planning, but lots of heart and drive, and you have to come deface a discussion about the incident with your fantasies about how they apparently got away with something 'because they are black'.

Nice job man.

A real example to us dumb southerners, Im sure.

You need to spend time with more than just people who like to eat organic food and appreciate local artwork.

Go to the Cracker Barrel. Spend some time with the real folks and learn about what's really going on in this city and country.

Which Im sure you do every day from your perch at Berkman?  Are you trying to imply that your uppity friends from the suburbs who won't come downtown because of the homeless take you to Cracker Barrel instead?

Well thats lovely, Im sure.

Now that you know everything there is to know about Jacksonville, I think I would really appreciate your take on the 'real volk'.

That would be amazing.

Yes. That is exactly what I am implying. If we put a Cracker Barrel down here, maybe more people would actually come down.

Why not a Denny's and um, a general store while we're at it.....you know...the kind with peanut shells and straw all over the floor.

Something authentic.

Now you've got the right kind of thinking to rebuild downtown.

Which is why you belong in the suburbs.  Of Folkston Georgia.

You clearly need to stop hanging out with downtown cafe owners, and spend a moment wondering why everyone is taking the piss out of you in this town. ;)

You seem a bit backwoodsy, which is why I assume you left New York, but with a little therapy and a semester of finishing school you might turn out ok.

This may be NE Florida on the map, but culturally it is more like SE Georgia. Do you and I even live in the same city I wonder? Or do you just live in your own little bubble where people sing about parking tickets and panhandlers perform for you for nickels? I have never met someone so ignorant and naive before. You're in a for a difficult reality check one day soon.

You can't just jump out of your car like that. Not in a tunnel.  Not on a bridge. It's terribly dangerous to everyone around. Who doesn't know that?

The only thing I will contribute to this thread is that when I heard one of the young girls in the group being interviewed by a network reporter, I swear I thought she was speaking a foreign language. Our schools here are not doing much of a job teaching kids to string a few words together that the general public can understand. Seems to me that today we produce a wealth of performing artists, dancers, ball players, rappers, etc. but ask them to finish a sentence and they are stumped.

I don't care if they were wearing tuxedos and running to Sardi's to catch a late supper. You can't get out of your car in a tunnel!

sez who?

Thats about the most amazing claim ive heard in a while.

You can't just jump out of your car like that. Not in a tunnel.  Not on a bridge. It's terribly dangerous to everyone around. Who doesn't know that?

That tunnel is under the jurisdiction of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Their web site clearly states that pedestrians are not allowed in Lincoln Tunnel. (It's probably also somewhere in the fine print on the tickets or on the myriad of signs posted before you enter the tunnel). It's the first item in their FAQ (http://www.panynj.gov/faqs/bridges-tunnels.html#faqsBrTuGenQu01 (http://www.panynj.gov/faqs/bridges-tunnels.html#faqsBrTuGenQu01)). So it is "can't" not "shouldn't". If you elect to use  the tunnel then you elect to follow their rules of use. If you don't agree to their rules of use, there are other means to access the city that are "pedestrian-friendly".  They are also listed in their FAQ.

I feel for these kids and hope they have another shot at that TV appearance. But it sure sounds like their chaperones were pretty naive in their preparations and scheduling to get the kids to their appearance on time. The Port Authority's response was not surprising. Their pre-2001 response would likely have been the same, just with different department names on the badges , since security has always been heightened in those heavily used access points. At least once they sorted out that the people running through the tunnel meant no harm, they tried to help them out to get to the show on time.
