Hi, I am in need of a haircut and haven't found a place in town I like yet. Anyone know a good, old fashioned barber shop they would recommend (not a salon or a Super Cuts type place) where I can get a trim and a straight razor?
Thank you for starting this thread. I have been keeping my hair at a 1/2" for several years and would love to get the back right.
A straight shave!
I have seen the straight razors and leather stropes when I was a kid.
Don't they actually use hot steaming towels and work up a lather with a boars hair bristle brush from a solid block of shaving soap?
I suggest Don Redman's Barbershop on Belfort Road. :)
It Closed...

Go to Don's Sportsman's Barber Shop on Belfort Road.
I see Brian at A Cut Above Salon in the Modis Building every month. Highly recommended. And a plus for me, it's right around the corner. lol
Anyone know how the new barber shop is in Avondale? Looks fantastic, but haven't had a chance to try it yet.
That's where I go. It's a good value and opens at 7am. Old School Barbershop.

Do they have hot shaving cream? Ahhhh
I go there as well. They do a good job and the place is really nice. They include a hot neck towel treatment.
New shop, pomade and tonic just opened up on Blanding and Lakeshore. Real old school feel with hot shaves. Other old school barber shops include the new one in avondale, the one next to Murray Hill Theatre and Jim Newmans barber shop, also in Murray Hill (I prefer this one out of the 2 in Murray Hill)
There's also a goo old-school barbershop in the strip at the corner of St Johns Bluff and Atlantic which is open hella-early in the morning to cater to the resident military crowd.
The Art of Shaving in the SJTC has a one-chair barber shop complete with straight razors, hot towels, and warmed shave cream.

Pomade and Tonic on Blanding at Cassat. Retro Barber shop with a social club feel to it. check them out on Facebook.
I've been going to Old School in Avondale and I've (and more importantly my wife) been really happy. I like the atmosphere but also like that I can usually get in and out quickly most days.
Usually Brian cuts my hair FWIW.
Having lived in and around some of the oldest parts of Jacksonville all my years, traveling often, my vote also goes Pomade & Tonic on Blanding, south of the Schwinn shop and LakeShore Produce, between Lakeshore Blvd., and the south end of SR111/CassattAve., just immediately north of the CedarRiver (/creek) on the east side of this stretch of SR21.
Truly the best, most attentive consult, ever. Easy to enjoy comfortable atmosphere, friendly hospitable, talented, patient and accomodating folks, wide array of tastefulbackgroundmusic. BYOB, LOL.
As stated above, definitely DO check the frequently programmed events on facebook.
CarShows, Live MUSIC, ZOMBIEWALK ANYONE? Charity fundraisers... = big heart, this guy.
This talented gentleman is tirelessly working to bring the surrounding community back to life by providing a top notch and essential service and that sorely needed "third place" where neighbors feel comfortable lingering and become friends, despite the current autocentric streetscape.
He (Farrell) hosts our community garden meetings,( www.facebook.com/gardenlakeshore ), shapes us up, and smoothes and soothes the tension of the days stressors out of your scalp, temples, neck and shoulders to cap off your Fresh makeover. Very seriously doubt you could possibly be disappointed by price, services offered, high level of meticulous attention to detail and complete focus on each individual customer who is remembered by name.
Truly a classy guy doing everything right.
Try him out and make yourself feel great.
I swear he owns a time machine.
Well read, this kid.
West end of the marina mile,(www.jacksonvillemarinamile.com) just a short cycle ride from Riverside, Avondale, Fairfax, Ortega, St.Johns Park, south of Murrayhill, north of Cedar Hills, ConfederatePoint, Wesconnett, HydePark, etc.
