Columbus, like much of central Ohio, is flat. But not everyone wants it to stay that way and if you're one of them, grab a pail and shovel because Columbus needs a mountain.
Matthew Moorman, the director of Flatland Solutions, is blurring the lines between the natural and the artificial. As director of Flatland Solutions, a local research group, he is spearheading a campaign to build a mountain within the Columbus city limits.
What was initially a concept art piece has evolved into something more. It is no longer the mere fancy of an Ohio State sculpture major, but a serious effort to galvanize the community to inspiring heights.
"Building a mountain is an effort that requires more than what one man can offer. It requires a community effort. If we build a mountain, what else could we do together?" Moorman said. "It would be the beginning of a series of unique ideas that would give Columbus the enhanced character and identity that it deserves."
Moorman has received funding through a grant from Ohio State University.
You know, when I first tossed out the idea of a man made mountain in Jacksonville, it was a pipe-dream turned joke. The whole web lit up and dubbed it "HIPPIE MOUNTAIN"... I really got a good laugh out of that one. Now, I discover maybe the idea is more REAL and much more doable than any of us thought. Just imagine what this would do for Florida/Jacksonville and our park system and tourism $$$??? Florida's ONLY mountain??? This would have to be rich! Where? My best guess would be either west of Argyle Forest, or somewhere West of the "outer Beltway route" and North of I-10, near the Nassau County Line. If 600 feet is possible in Ohio, is it possible here? What about a big lake and the mountain? Could it reach 1,000? What about 2,000 (and thus be a REAL mountain as defined by the Royal Geographic Society)? What a cool idea, but then which of our local good ol' boys would stand to get rich off of it? The idea is VERY interesting, maybe we should incorporate a group and seek funding for Hippie Mountain!

This is a really interesting idea but I think the construction costs would be huge and you could probably not make enough money from tourism to service the construction loans. I am surprised that this hasnt been tried in Dubai though. Also, building it on the fringe of the urban area would reduce its appeal and being just 2000 feet tall would not be enough to allow for natural snow which would be the main attractant presumably.
RiversideGator, I don't think the mountain would service the loans from revenue either. BUT. Add to that mountain, the mother of all "Wild River" or "Log" rides, a huge artificial ski slope with snow making ability for the cold days and a special surface for summer time. A cable tram to the top. Incline Railway. Lake. Cave club and restaurant complex. Picnic Forest. Island Camping. This place would take off like Moodys Goose. Further? Look at the Ohio Plan. It's only 650 feet high and it is in line for all sorts of artistic grants... They are planning to form the "mountain" in the shape of the skyline. We could maybe form 6 great butt cheeks, 2 facing in each direction (Except East) and tell Miami, Tallahassee, Georgia-Washington DC to kiss our collective A#*!

How serious are they about this mountain, this seems a bit riduculous.
For me, this all started as one of those funny dreams, "what if I were god?" or perhaps you too have played the, "if I could just go back in time, and show up at Gettysburg, with a machine gun..." game. Well, IF I were a BILLIONAIRE, I think I would do this in Jacksonville, just to make a playground for my city. So I started posting some comments one day such as, "hey y'all, let's build a mountain!" and it was quickly named "Hippie Mountain." I think some thought I was back on the old 60's pharmacy studies... Nope, just having some fun.
Then along comes this news. They are REALLY SERIOUS! They plan to do something that no-one has done... I don't see why not. I bet if they pull this off, they will have the highest point of land between the Great Smokey Mountains and the Ozark's. It is bound to become the playground of the Midwest. Artistic, and toss in the theme park that you KNOW has to show up, and they may rival Mickey. Sounds incredible, but everything I found says they intend to BUILD THIS MOUNTAIN...
Now let's see Jacksonville, if we have 8 guys, and 12 shovels, and ummmm.

well in that case heres my answer to what to do with cecil.......build a moutain
I can see the headlines now.... coming to you live from the Mountains of Jacksonville,Florida......

I'm from Appalachian Ohio, and I would like to state for the record that not all of Ohio is flat. Drive about 45 minutes south or east of Columbus and you will see a distinct difference in topography. The elevations are not terribly high (most top out at around 1200-1300'), but it is fairly rugged terrain.
